Well, we Republicans have shot ourselves in the foot, again.
What is a body to do? I cannot vote for a man who thinks that humans and dinosaurs coexisted on Earth when it was suddenly formed 6,000 years ago. If he kept those views private, that would be fine, but he wants (creationism) taught in the public schools.
Maine would be a laughingstock of the scientific community.
I am sorry ... Paul LePage is probably a nice man and a successful manager at Marden's ... but governor of a state? I don't think so.
So who are those independent guys?
Dick Brooks, Phillips

No, I've not seen any "personal attacks" from Republicans here or elsewhere, not at all. I didn't see them continually say that DemoRATS have "ruined" Maine, are communists, and are all on welfare. Those high minded Republicans are discussing the nuts-and-bolts of how LePage is going to turn Maine into the errr.... well ... America was brought to a near depression by Bush and Cheney, but that was the fault of Democrats after all ... so, high fliers, those Repubicans.

2 thoughts tonight...first - the writer of the letter is a fairly liberal republican based on previous letters to this newspaper, in fact he supported Mills in the primary - MIlls is a man who I personally like as an acquaintance but does not strike me as truly conservative. So no surprise he's less than thrilled with LePage. Second many political pundits made some comments last week that are already coming true - basically indicating that the Republican party would run on a "throw out the bums" ticket and the Dems would run by negatively campaigning against LePage - in fact some went so far as to question how long before some sullied the good name of Mardens by his employment there, his upbringing or even his french heritage. Sad that they were right, but given Libby Mitchell's accomplishments, it may be the best game plan for the liberals in hopes of at least keeping the election close. Too bad we don't have a candidate that is more to the middle of either of these polar extremes in their views.

Right, LePage is just going to come off as the Peter Mills of the lunitic fringe in a state that went for President Obama by over 20 percentage points! Now that's some wonderful Republican logic! How about pushing the State in the wrong direction being a Republican fault our own due to incompetence. So much for the welfare population which you plug on and on about. Then again you never had any of the brilliance to see that perhaps it was the Naval shipyards closing which damaged the population the most. As Governor, Mr. LePage would be able to enhance his employer, as he did when he allowed 200 jobs to walk out the door at the LL Bean call center in Waterville recently. LLB was having weekend sales that weren't going to Mardens. That stopped when LLB started opening stores in other states. Which meant that LLB was paying rent, electricity, heat ETC. on a large building, half of which was empty. As mayor, did Mr. LePage ask LLB what it doing with half an empty building? Does Mardens pay rent on empty buildings? LLB couldn't get a break on the lease from the owners. And Mr. LePage did nothing. So when the lease was up, LLB didn't renew. I don't think you or I would have renewed, either. 200 people walked out the door at the end of April and the owner has an empty building. I don't think Mickey Marden would have allowed that without a fight. Nice job, mayor. Now you want us to vote for you to do what?

Success at Mardens; we should applaud that. LePage has oversold is ceremonial position of Mayor of Waterville.
Let's stop the lies. Maine is not doing poorly because of 35 years of Democratic control of the legislature. That's just Republicans pointing fingers at any one other than themselves. For 100 years Republicans contolled Maine. Poor worthless farms dotted every road and village while huge corporations prevented businesses from opening so that they would control the labor market.
A LePage vistory means poverty for Maine, the ruination of our scenic landscape, and the health of Maine's citizens.

Puh-leez, you piss me off? I couldn't be bothered wasting anger on the likes of you. What does piss me off, as you so elegantly put it, is people who continue to claim that tax cuts trickle down and the way to improve the economy is to give big business tax breaks-breaks that we individuals have to pay for. It's also people who claim to be for less government intrusion in our lives but who want to pass constitutional amendments telling us who can and can't get married, what women can and can't do with their bodies, and making it illegal to burn a flag. While I respect the flag and believe that only a moron would burn it in protest, I also believe that you cannot legislate patriotism, which is what the CON-servatives want to do. I also stand in awe of CON-servatives who claim to have the moral high ground, yet we continue to have the likes of Newt Gingrich, Mark Sanford, Henry Hyde, Mark Foley, Larry Craig, and many others. To be sure, the Democrats have their feet of clay, but then we don't claim to have a lock on morality. So why don't you climb down off your collective sanctimonious high horses and actually do some for, rather than to, the people?

Maine's economy, too, was just as bad when Jocko (the last Republi-CON) was governor. So how do you explain that? I guess you'd like to have more Republi-CONS like "Less" Otten who wanted the state to pony up $260 MILLION TAX DOLLARS to get Jackson Labs to expand here. By contrast, Ms. Mitchell spent the day at a campaign fundraiser (even though she's supposed to be a clean elections candidate) put on by a PAC and hosted by baldacci and Stephen King..even worse - it was held in Boston which means no Maine businesses would benefit from the expenditures and most likely a portion of the money was also from out of state contributors. As a staunch conservative I don't feel served by any party or group in Maine. However, to have a Creationist and an adherent of Ibn Ezra’s “calculations” as Governor would be true madness. What is sad is he looked quite appealing compared to the other options. If we ever hire him or someone that thinks like him to run the state we might as well start buying our school text books from Texas where they're marginalizing Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Ben Franklin’s efforts in the American Revolution because they were Deists or out and out atheists. It’s one thing for the Christian’s to hate gays and anyone else that isn’t like them so openly but an entirely different thing to have one of that ilk in the Blaine House. Guess I’ll sit this one out unless someone else shows up that wants jobs in Maine for our young folk that don't involve waiting tables.
