Soldier with Maine ties killed in Afghanistan

AUGUSTA –  A soldier with ties to Maine has been killed in Afghanistan, according to a release issued by Gov. John Baldacci Tuesday.

Sgt. Brandon Silk, 25, of Orono was killed Monday while serving with the 101st Airborne Division in Afghanistan. Sgt. Silk was a Black Hawk crew chief, stationed in Fort Campbell, Kentucky, according to his family.

U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree said 25-year-old Sgt. Brandon Silk of Orono was killed Monday from injuries suffered during a hard helicopter landing. Silk served with the 101st Airborne Division out of Fort Campbell, Ky.

Orono High School Assistant Principal Bob Sinclair said Silk played football and ran track while in high school, and joined the military upon graduation. David Farmer, spokesman for Gov. John Baldacci, said Silk was married.

“The death of a soldier is a terrible tragedy for family, friends and the entire community. A hole is opened in many lives,”  Baldacci said in a prepared statement. “The men and women who serve in the military have earned our respect and our gratitude. During this very difficult time, we will keep Sgt. Silk’s family and friends in our thoughts and in our prayers.”

Baldacci spoke with Sgt. Silk’s family Tuesday.

“In Maine, we’re all an extended family,”  Baldacci said. “At times like these, we have to reach out and take care of one another. Sgt. Silk was a hero, and we will honor his life and his sacrifice.”

Silk's family has asked for privacy as they cope with the loss of their son.

Baldacci will order flags lowered to half-staff on the day of Silk’s funeral.

During the primary Hillary

During the primary Hillary promised to have the troops home within 6 months of taking office. Obama laughed at her and said that was too long. That's why I voted for him. It was a lie. And as for using these men's sacrifice to attack the president. We did that to Bush for 6 years. Obama wants the job, he can suck it up and take responsibility for his wars and his lies.

I voted for Obama because he

I voted for Obama because he promised to get us out of this mess. Instead he is sending more of our young people to die in Bush's war. Another lie from Obama. He's just a Bush that's owned by Soros instead of the oil companies. Whatever happened to presidents like FDR, Kennedy and even Reagan who at least stood for something (other than lying to win) and wanted to lead with vision.
