Affidavits: Men planned killings as revenge

PARIS — Two men accused of killing two residents in Rumford last week admitted to police their involvement in the shootings, according to affidavits released Monday in Oxford County Superior Court. One said it was retribution for a recent assault on a woman, records state.

Eric Hammel is lead into Oxford County Superior Court Monday for his first appearance on double murder charges for the shooting deaths of Victor Sheldon and Roger Day, Jr., August 3, 2009, in Rumford, Maine. Also charged was Richard Moulton, Jr., who helped plan the killings.

Eric Joseph Hamel, 19, and Richard A. Moulton Jr., 20, both of Mexico, made initial court appearances Monday. Each is charged with the shooting deaths of 22-year-old Victor Reed Sheldon and 48-year-old Roger Leroy Day Jr. on Aug. 3.

According to an affidavit by Detective Lucas Hare of the Maine State Police, Hamel told police in an interview Thursday that he shot and killed Sheldon and Day in the living room of their home at 244 Pine St. Hamel said he left the house on foot and buried the handgun in woods on Oak Street, a dead-end road about two-tenths of a mile from the crime scene. Hare and Detective Scott Gosselin recovered the weapon after Hamel showed them where he had hidden it.

An affidavit by Detective John Hainey of the Maine State Police stated Moulton admitted to police Friday that he had helped plan and commit the killings. Moulton said he and Hamel planned to shoot both men as revenge for an assault by Sheldon on his estranged wife, Gayla Sheldon, who was dating Moulton at the time of the killings.

Sheldon was scheduled to appear in the Rumford District Court on Aug. 4 for arraignment on a charge of domestic assault against Galya Sheldon, Mexico Police Chief Jim Theriault said Monday night. He was arrested by that department on July 6.

Prior to his arrest, Moulton had been cooperating with police and said he had been in the house with Day and Sheldon before they were killed around 10 p.m. He said the two men were playing video games when he went to use the bathroom and heard three shots fired inside the house.

A resident passing by outside also heard the shots and saw a white man with dark clothing and dark, shoulder-length hair leave the building. Moulton also helped police create a sketch of the suspect who left the building.

Police have said all four men knew each other, and that Sheldon and Moulton were close friends.

Neither Hamel nor Moulton have a significant criminal history, and both were honor roll students at Mountain Valley High School in Rumford.

Hamel was arrested at about 4:45 a.m. Friday, and Moulton at about 4:30 p.m. that day.

Justice William Brodrick accepted Assistant Attorney General Andrew Benson's request that Hamel and Moulton be held without bail. John Jenness Jr., who was standing in as defense attorney for Hamel, said George Hess will be appointed to represent Hamel. Ed David, standing in as counsel for Moulton, said Kevin Joyce will represent Moulton.

Neither man entered a plea, and will not be required to do so unless a grand jury indicts them on the murder charges. Since the Oxford County Jail now serves as a 72-hour holding facility, both Hamel and Moulton will be taken to the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn.

Day's parents, Roger Day Sr. and Janice Day of Rumford, described Day as a quiet, generous person who helped his neighbors. Roger Day Sr. said both Hamel and Moulton had visited Day before.

"They've hurt a lot of people," she said. "They were both loved very much, on both sides of the family."

For the person who stated

For the person who stated that it' snot hard to get on honor role for special needs classes, i graduated with Hamel, and grew up with Richard. They were both really nice, and i am having a hard time dealing with it. As Richard's brother said, all four families are hurting, and for the a-hole who posted after him,,they had no idea what was happening, and they do have to live with it, but these families of the accused are victims, just like the surviving family members. It is not their fault, and you should not be rubbing it in their faces. This town is hurting, and you are right, murder is not the answer, but neither is attacking a relative of the accused family. Like you said, what if it was your brother or sister or family member that held the gun? you would be confused about your feelings, wondering if you could have prevented it or not. You may be a friend of the victims brother ( Which one, Chris or Dale?) but you have no right to make the assumption that he hasn't tried to see it from the family of the victims point of view, maybe you should follow your advice and try to see it from theirs. and I am not condoning what they did, but my brain is having a hard time putting these people in the "Murderer" category. I also knew the victims, what I don't understand is why he shot roger. They gave a clear reason why they shot victor, and i know roger was a witness, but they had to know they were going to get caught, and his death would just add on. Roger was a harmless man, who would befriend anyone. And victor had kids, even though he allegedly abused his ex wife, it's no reason to be shot in the head. The gossip about this in Rumford is whether or not the ex wife knew anything, or even had a hand in it. May both men rest inn peice and may god bless and bring peace to ALL 4 FAMILIES.

Very, very sad to see Mr and

Very, very sad to see Mr and Mrs Day's photo here, knowing the devastation they are feeling. Their son is not only passed on before them, but murdered in cold blood. Their sentence for this crime will be lifelong pain. Nothing less than life sentences without any chance of parole for any reason is justice for the 2 killers.

ok, first of all i would

ok, first of all i would like to remind people that there are two other families involved in this senseless tragedy as well. on being the family of Eric Hamel and the other being the family of Richard Moulton (JR) i say (JR) because Richard's Father is RIchard Moulton.
i stress about these other families because i happen to be part of one of them. Richard Moulton (JR) happens to be my Brother!!
i understand the anger and animosity that you all may have towards my brother and i completely undstand why you would feel that way. my family and myself are very Angry, Disappointed with Richie. i have known Richie since he was 4 years old and have been raised in the same household as him for over 10 years. my family and i are truely sorry for the Day and Sheldon families, and we hold them in our prayers. we carry our own sense of guilt during this time. i am not able to be there for my family like i should be, for i no longer live in Maine. but am trying to do what i can to help. i felt by posting that i could inlighten some people. i would just like to remind people that there are 4 families that have been effected here.however i do understand the differences between the family situations. tragically the Days and Shelson's will no longer have the oppertunity to see their loved ones. compared to the Hamel Family and my family can see our loved one.

i would like to thank you all for taking a moment to read what i had to say. feel free to comment in ANY way you would like. thi will be my only post, but may copy and paste it every day if need be. im just trying to prove a point just as all of you are.

thank you and ~GOD BLESS~ *Seth*

I'm sorry but, your "loved

I'm sorry but, your "loved one" planned and executed the murder of two men. I didn't know either of the murder victims but I do know one brother of Victor and no matter what transpired between him and his "EX" and your brother, senseless murder is NOT the answer. Honestly, I don't understand why you would want to see your brother after what he did. In any case, I feel bad for your family that you have to live the rest of your lives knowing that your brother took the wrong road. It is still unforgivable and both of those "honor students" are looking at a long long prison sentence. Like you said, alot of people were affected by this double murder but you need to see it from the Sheldon's and the Day's perspectives. What if it was your son, your brother, your mother, your father, your sister, etc. I honestly don't feel bad for your brother or that animal that pulled the trigger.

This is a horrible situation

This is a horrible situation ... For these boys to think they could do this without foresight of consequences means to me they have no regard for human life...The woman was divorced from the victim so why would they remain contact with him if he was so violent...As for moultan being their roommates shows he is a twofaced hipocrit and I wouldnt trust that boy any further then the bars that hold him right now...They both deserve to be where they are right now and I hope this is settled as lifeterms for both for this heinous crime.

I think the reason they keep

I think the reason they keep mentioning the honor roll is a lack of other information about them and their background.

I went to High School with

I went to High School with them, and our town paper stated that the police spoke with some kids at the high school at the time, but they were a-holes that picked on any one who was not a jock, they should have interviewed those of who talked to them, grew up as friends with them, or even hamels girlfriend ( my prayers go to her as well.)

Chippy, I think the reason

Chippy, I think the reason they keep bringing up the "honor roll" description is because people tend to think honor roll students can do no wrong.

I don't see why the media

I don't see why the media keeps saying that these men were honor role students at MVH. The school has a bad enough reputation and this is not going to help.

whatsup's picture

I agree with chippy..."honor

I agree with chippy..."honor roll students" it don't take much in "SPECIAL" classes to be on the honor roll. Why keep stressing they were honor roll students...they were a couple of kids who did not think or just a bit twisted in their head. it has nothing to do with being an honor roll student. MVHS has a rough rep and this doesn't help.

Well, maybe I'm not so

Well, maybe I'm not so bright, but I am failing to see why an abused woman's mother's job has anything to do with the price of tea in China. Or if someone suspects that someone else has anything to do with this horrific crime why he is wasting time blogging about it when maybe he should be talking to the police? I think maybe he just feels the need to be "important" today because he knows these losers. Personally I don't think that being known as a friend to the killer is anything to brag about.

whats totally interesting

whats totally interesting about the whole case is that Gayla Sheldon has been claiming to have no knowledge of this planed murder of her late "ex" husband. How can that be possible? she was sleeping with Moulton. I think she knows more then she has told.
and for the rest of you on here that have left comments this is not the first time Victor Sheldon has been arrested for domestic abuse of his ex wife. There have been three other times that I personally know of. both before and after there divorce. Victor was my friend but he was no angel.
Whats really interesting is Gaylas mother is the animal control officer for the town of Andover Maine. I wonder if this will effect her mothers position in any way?
Are the police also investigating Gayla's brother Josh. who told me each time Victor assaulted Gayla that he wanted to kill Victor. I smell a conspiracy.

quite a plan. "You come in,

quite a plan. "You come in, during the day, shoot them and run away. I'll stay here and identify you. Later, after we get caught, you can show them where you hid the gun." What does the "estranged" wife have to say about her alleged assault?
