OXFORD — From the fans to the police to the neighbors, the inaugural Nateva Festival closed Sunday with widespread approval.
Brandt Passalacqua and Anna Neiman, of Northampton, Mass., said they heard about the festival from a friend and The Flaming Lips were one of the groups they were looking forward to.
“I had no idea what they would be like,” said Passalacqua. “They blew me away.”
“I loved it,” said Neiman. “I was happy when it began and I was happy when it ended.”
People owning property adjacent to the Fairgrounds said they were pleased with the way the concert was being run. Robin Millett and her son, Shawn Knowlan, sold food outside Millett's house on Pottle Road directly across from the main stage.
“They have been an exceedingly well-behaved, polite, courteous group of kids,” she said.
Knowlan said the noise from the performances was not loud enough to disturb the neighborhood, and that there were only minor disturbances quickly quelled by security personnel. He said expected traffic jams never materialized, likely due to a reluctance of area residents to travel during the festival.
“I think a lot of people got spooked,” he said.
The fans weren't spooked, however.
Local and national bands began performing on Thursday night for early arrivals, and the main stage located outdoors at the Oxford Fairgrounds opened on Friday. Sunday's acts included Zappa Plays Zappa, featuring Frank Zappa's son Dweezil Zappa; funk legends George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic; and the rock and blues group The Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi Band. Closing out the festival was Furthur, which includes former Grateful Dead members Phil Lesh and Bob Weir.
In recent days, the main stage shows have attracted increasing numbers of the thousands of concert-goers from the satellite campgrounds. The Flaming Lips packed the stage area on Saturday night with a unique rock and roll sound and entertaining stage performance. Among other oddities, lead singer Wayne Coyne made his entrance in something akin to a hamster ball and went crowd surfing in it.
The crowd didn't phase Wayne and Jane Lewis, Pottle Road residents who live opposite the main entry gate and shuttle drop-off point. They were wary of the festival at first but glad that no major issues arose. Jane said that there were some difficulties due to Pottle Road being closed, but that she wouldn't mind if the festival returned next year.
“For us older people, it really hasn't been bad music,” Wayne said.
Scott Hamilton, who lives on the opposite end of the fairgrounds, offered T-shirts, ice, parking and free cooling hose sprays to concert passersby. Hamilton felt the festival did not prove to be a substantial boon to area businesses, since most attendees stayed in the area of the fairgrounds. However, he felt the event could increase awareness of the Oxford Hills area.
“It's kind of nice to have these many neighbors move in for the weekend,” he said.
Several American flags popped up at campsites and on music lovers themselves in recognition of the Independence Day holiday. The large wooden “Nateva” sign on the hill overlooking the fairgrounds was transformed overnight to give it a stars and stripes makeover.
Mark Lacoursiere, of Edmonton, Canada, was attracted to the festival by the wide range of music. A teacher on summer break, he said the environment proved to be a friendly one among both concert-goers and workers.
“I'm very particular about organization, and they were very well-organized,” he said.
Chief Robert Federico of the Norway Police Department worked at the festival from its start on Thursday. He believed there were 21 arrests, mostly drug-related, by Sunday afternoon. From his station near a checkpoint leading into the campgrounds, however, he had heard no complaints.
“It seems to be a very cooperative bunch,” he said. “Quite a few people came over and thanked us for what we've been doing.”

PS
I forgot to add that I was at Nateva and it was amazing! And I felt much safer than at other festivals I've been to. Thank you to the organizers for getting it right! And thank you to all of the kind strangers I met and shared my fun weekend with. :-)

Hi, I just wanted to throw in my two cents about this "debate" I'm reading in the comments.
Do you know how many highly educated and respected people smoke pot? Doctors, lawyers, even members of the police force. Do you know why? Because even though, due to the voting rights of the people, it hasn't become legal (yet) most of us know the simple fact that it's ok in moderation. Those intelligent people who smoke don't get burnt out or derail their successful careers. And for those that do have a problem, the problem lies in their addiction, which is a disease. It could be anything else, even a legal drug like alcohol. (By the way, how many people have you heard of that smoke pot and them go home to beat their spouse and kids, or smoke themselves to death in one night?)
The reason you might not understand the casualness with which we view pot is most likely due to keeping yourself and your family in a protective bubble. And while you should certainly want to protect your children, you might want to be careful about teaching them not to be able to listen to others and respect their views while keeping their own views.
Yes, it is illegal... However, I don't know where you live, but since all I would get is a $100 fine and no mark on my record, I'm not exactly worrying myself about it. Besides, most non-idiot pot smokers (and there are many!) smoke at home or in other safe environments.
There is one point I agree with regarding the dangers posed to people who are involved in drug smuggling. Since we know that we are never actually going to see harsh punishments as suggested above (sorry!), the only way to obliterate the underground system is to make it legal. And considering that state after state is considering or even voting into law decriminalization, this looks like it will eventually be the case. Do you really think that if pot was so evil that doctors would prescribe it? Or state governments decriminalize it? As I said in the beginning, it should be done in moderation. And as Eddie Izzard would say, "But the Dutch smoke pot, and they speak four languages!"
Smile, relax, you don't have to agree but a little respect and tolerance can go a long way.

Tell me, what other laws do we have on the books that are ok to break?
Also, if you are a lawbreaker yourself, then what right do you have to accuse another person if they commit a crime against you?

I like your subject line!
I'm pretty sure every state has some strange laws still on the books that aren't enforced, like it is illegal to walk backwards on a sidewalk on Sunday or some foolishness. So strange, in fact, that the board game Balderdash has a category for it called Laughable Laws that has you guess some of these bizarre but true laws!
So, it seems that you consider all laws, enforced or not, as equal? If you let me extrapolate this for a moment, smoking pot in private is as bad as rape or murder? Do you think that if someone was on the receiving end of a horrible crime, they should think twice about reporting it to the police because they once did something that might have gotten them a $100 fine? I sincerely hope that you have never had a speeding ticket or broken any of the laws that are jokes now (you can find them easily online), because then you might have to reconsider your statement.

First of all, the drug laws are enforced, so what do the crazy laws on the books from 100 years ago even compare to them. Drug laws may be "Laughable" to you, but you could go to jail for it just the same.
Secondly, smoking pot just as illegal as rape or murder. The sentences for rape and murder are greater ( as they should be), but that doesnt make them any more illegal than drugs. Dealing and using drugs is a crime, just like rape or murder.
Buying a quantity of dope that only constitutes a $100 fine still requires you to go through a dealer. The dealer could get many years for selling you that dope, and if you are with him when he gets arrested, then you might get years also.
Like I said earlier, what other crimes is it OK to commit. If you have a disregard for the law, just how far does it go?
I cant beleive the lengths and risks dopers go through to get high.

Good point, if I were buying stuff from Mexico and not grown locally. I still agree it makes for risky business and we should fully legalize it if we honestly want to make that aspect go away. Somehow I doubt you would vote for that to happen, though.
I think I'll bow out now, I've made my points clear and I think anyone that might happen to read this can already see where you've contridicted yourself. Also, if you haven't been able to step back and converse respectfully by now, then it would be futile to continue to talk to you about it. Good luck to you - I genuinely hope you find a way to be less negative and hateful. Goodbye.

The syndicates now ally themselves to arms dealers whether through legitimate gains or through illegitimate remember the Iran-Contra affairs and how quickly those were pushed forward. If you have no idea what a criminal syndicate is despite living all over the world? Are you trying to say that the Chinese triads, who legally supplied AK-47's, and other arms to the Taliban are not at fault because of their situation even though it kills US service members and that opposed to smoking pot that is better? Criminal syndicates do not have to sell drugs it can be any community within terrorism or domestic causes such as the Neo-Nazi movement which all purchases and sells guns illegally for that intent within their own memberships. What you say is that in respecting you; you have no idea about how dangerous say a Snake Head is compared to the pot "crisis" in you're own mind? Deaf, dumb, and blind this is useless trying to talk to you; duck and dodge when you're smarter then that and know it but still play stupid to be a perfect little conservative. Which means that, purposefully you play ignorant so as not to appear in full understanding of the contextual arguments. Just to satisfy yourself considering I am not smoking a joint the ignorance you play up is astounding considering the Snake Heads and others are discussed in great detail in several printed articles among others. Including the whore house which they ran in Lisbon as a massage parlor for a number of years which greatly increased the human trafficking and sex slave operations in that portion of Maine. I am saying the law does not catch up because the largest syndicates deal in arms and other means and use the streets as reinforcements in trade. Come on play stupid with me again go ahead post all you want of criticizing people you're own thin ice considering how stupid you play it. Or, you could have just ignored it because ignorance is far better then admitting the truth. You know my Uncle Patrick taught me something if you want respect do not be ignorant or arrogant with the other side and be willing to listen. To be ignorant of facts is a specialty reserved for those whose ignorance matches their isolationist tones in reality.

I'm not calling you name just making sure that we both play on equal footing and enjoying the reactions out of you that you get from others. Keep playing the game, keep posting on here how dangerous pot is, and duck how dangerous the syndicates are that operate. The more you want to correct me and have an apprehension between right and wrong the more you turn right against me totally just for fun and to show the kids you have what a big man you are. This is deaf, dumb, and blind; letting the outfits and syndicates operate and pinching out the lower ranks who get caught. You really are that stupid and you wanted to play hard ball like you had a feeling for it. Keep telling yourself that the law is on you're side... I mean ownership over you because of the ideals which you populate and cannot back up make you a target for you're own self directed hatred of others. People go to jail all the time over drunk driving and you said know one went to jail over it care to stipulate? Have you ever backed the outfit or the operations it holds here in Maine? I was expecting trouble because of the size of the event and the amount of people attending...That trouble never happened.....How about all these sporting events that happen and a riot breaks out after a team wins that are not the favorite, cars being turned over, and burned, people throwing bottles, theres kids there...would you rather have them see that,or a group of friendly people smoking a little dope and having fun? I think the complainers here are just upset cause things went so well at the show, and need something to gripe about. Im almost 59 years old, and have been to plenty of shows including the Dead in Lewiston in the 70's..And there was no trouble at that show either.......Guess it depends on the people attending....And if Ralph would have been there I'm sure there would have been TROUBLE.......My hats off to the people incharge of the event, as well as all the great fans.........And all the great people living in the area......If theres another event next year....I'll probably be there....

It is because of my experience that I know for a fact that there are alot of drugs.
I graduated in 1978, and I cant tell you how many of my friends and classmates have died from drugs.
You say I have no right to judge? I have every right to decide what to expose my family to. And if a venue is a magnet for drugs, then we are not going there.

I'm sure they will be back since the owners of the fairgrounds only seem to care about the almighty dollar. But, when that happens, I'll be headed someplace where I can listen to music when and IF I choose to and at a volume that's not ear splitting!
I, for one, am GLAD it's over!

I would like to know the facts to support what you have to say, when I have talked to people doing security and they said things were relatively quiet. I live a little bit from the racetrack where people were camping and they were super quiet, they were even more quiet than the 250 crowd. I don't listen to this music, but to each there own and if it brings much needed money into the community and things went as well as I am hearing it should definetly come back.

That means there were many, many more druggies that the law didnt catch.
I looked at the website and it said that "children are welsome', they even showed a kiddie train ride. I have a 5 year old, and there is no way on God's green Earth that I would take him where there are drugs. For that matter, I even go on my own, but it is certainly no place for a child.
What are parents thinking? Or are these kids parents the drug users?

I got bad news for you...You better not take your kid out of the house then cause there are drugs EVERYWHERE......I have a 20month old and I after I had gone over and check things out I kinda wish I would have brought her because She would have loved it the whole event was great and drugs was not an issue...I hate how people make everything seem like such a negative thing....there are drugs everywhere and 21 arrest at an event that started getting under way Thursday afternoon until Sunday is so minor....Peopl are truely making the event sound like it was a huge drug fest and that isnt even the cause. I had front row seats to this whole event being that my inlaws lived right on the road and I was at there house the whole weekend from 8am-1am each day...People that werent there really need to stop judging....AND IM GONNA SAY IT AGAIN I WOULD VERY MUCH BRING MY 20MONTH OLD TO NATEVA....and u can ask anyone that knows me Im a very protective mother.....

Are you arrogant enough to condemn everyone who goes simply because of a few who may use it in privacy. The privacy is the larger thing you want to condemn them enough so that everything is taken from them. What about the syndicate who pushes out drugs off of the legitimate businesses that it runs? You keep on getting scared when that comes up AJ and duck on everything this seems like there were a great many who had fun at the festival this year. Now, if you call it a comic book material what I've come up with then bare in mind some of the information gathered is through professional and historical information which is general public knowledge.

There are plenty of things to do on the 4th besides bringing my family around drugs.
I hate drugs (all drugs). I wish they'd give life to dealers, and 20 years to users.
It takes a pretty mentally weak person to put an illegal high above their family.

I used to be as brutal as you were until I realized that dealers and users can reform and that they can change their lives through various methods and through various programs. What you are saying is declare that know one save for yourself is above the law, have you ever smoked a cigar, have you ever had a shot of whiskey, and have you ever had a beer? It takes a pretty mentally weak person to duck the syndicate and outfit and sting it personally to low level thugs and force them to pray the price. Looks like what you have been doing is trying to forget the programs, duck on the lower levels, and let those who established the businesses go despite being the logistical arms and strategy for those purposes. If you keep ducking and playing the brutal little taskmaster then it looks like we have a reasoning and understanding that you would even duck in the face of a bribe if it came down to it.

Wow, you people are nutz! I live in Bangor and I dont take my kids to the crowds during the fourth, I want to protect them from the drunks. however I would take them to an outdoor Dead show any day. Have you ever taken your kid to a state fair? I see just as many wasted people at the State Fair as at outdoor festivals, How about a ball game at Fenway, are you for real? Bunch of violent jocks drinking in the sun. And dont give me the whole alchool is legal bit, it may be legal but the vast majority of drinkers engage in unlawful behavior or just plain imoral. Simple pot possesion in Maine is the equivilent of a speeding ticket. The majority of festival attendees have respect and love for their brothers and sisters. I feel bad for all the haters here, perhaps you have your own insecurtys that manefest by judging others and grouping casual pot smokers as drugies. And as far as being mentally weak, people whose use that gos beyound recreation have a disease of addiction.

"Crime and Violence"???!! Were YOU there Ralphiesmella?! Probably not, quit passin' judgement when you weren't even there to witness the scene. 21 arrests isn't enough "Crime and Violence" to warrant takin' everyone and puttin' them in jail. What a close minded individual you are, I almost feel sorry for you.
I think YOUR ignorance is what is wrong with this country.

First off I want to say being part of the Millet Family and having front row seats of the whole event I'm bothered by reading the comment arrest them all...I sat out side and even spend time in side the festival and I feel things went great...I well have you know the Hippies that you are talking so badly about were nothing but nice kind and curtious to the whole nieghborhood....I say only 21 arrest from about noon time Thursday until Sunday is an amazingly low number for the amount of people there and the lenght of time the event was...I hate reading hope people are judging people I feel if you were there rude things shouldn't be said by you...
I want to finish by saying Thank Frank for putting on a great event that was FUN AND SAFE for everyone...I really hope to see Nateva back in town next year and many more years to come.......

I'm a 48 year-old music lover, mother, teacher, Christian and friend. The music was amazing-pure and simple. If others feel the need to group all concert-goers together to stereotype and then persecute, it is because they do not understand. I'd like to offer our friend a free ticket next year and let him/her? figure out for themselves why we all came to Oxford. It was nice to meet the Millet family and to be cooled down by Scott Hamilton's hospitality. It was also nice to meet so many people working the festival that lived nearby and were happy to earn some extra cash. Thanks for the smiles and the good advice:)!
FYI- I spent money at Hannaford, Dunkin' Donuts, Pizza Hut, and the best little convenience store with a breakfast counter ever, as well as several places along the way. We also were fortunate enough to park our car and support a church that was very friendly. Due to the friendliness of the residents, the organization of the festival, and the quality of the music, we will certainly buy tickets again next year. Thank you, Oxford..... and surrounding communities.

do you want "them" to take their MJ and give it to you !?! It sure sounds like your the one smoking the wacky-tobacy based on your post. And oh yeah,,,you must be stoned to think a McCain-Palin presidency would be any better??? This country would be in utter pandemonium under a McCain-Palin presidency. Besides,,,Sarah Palin is a quitter,,,no one wants a quitter as a president, except maybe you.

Wow man, take there personal property, put them in jail, hmmm, sounds like something that happened in Germany about 75 years ago, how did that pan out anyhow? And the only public service Sarah Palin is fit for is the PTA, I can see her throwing one hell of a bake sale. And Glen Beck, are you friking kidding me?
"Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things. We know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who practice such things. Do you suppose, O man—you who judge those who practice such things and yet do them yourself—that you will escape the judgment of God? "

take their marrijuanna and put them in jail. The legal system could use the business and everyone knows they are bad... Look at all the crime and violence they brought with them. Hippies. They must be the problem with this country, them and OBAMA of course. If Johnny and Sarah were elected maybe we could have put them away and think of the money we wold have made in fines, legal fees etc. PALIN/Beck 2014 2 more years!!!!!

It would be nice to see something like this take place at Black Mountain in Rumford. Rumford could use the business and Black Mountain could stop asking taxpayers for handouts of course they would have to charge and not make this another one of their free private parties. that they also ask taxpayers to pick up the tab for.

to all involved. This is a great outcome. I only hope that someone (like the Oxford Hills Chamber of Commerce) conducts some study/survey to try to estimate the impact on the local business.
