AUBURN — Two men have been charged after a street race on Center Street Monday morning resulted in a collision that sent two people to the hospital.
At 11:44 a.m. police say 21-year-old Shawn Pelletier and Steven Harris, both of Lewiston, were racing on Center Street in Auburn when Harris' Honda Civic collided with a Hyundai that was exiting the Pep-Boys parking lot. The driver of the Hyundai, 31-year-old Michael Dozois of Lewiston, had to be extricated from the vehicle by Auburn firefighters.
According to the Auburn police, Dozois and Harris were transported to Central Maine Medical Center, where both are listed in satisfactory condition.
Harris was summonsed for driving to endanger.
Shawn Pelletier, the other driver, fled the scene of the accident in his Volkswagen Jetta, police say. He was located a short time later and charged with driving to endanger and violation of conditions of release. He is held without bail currently at the Androscoggin County Jail.
According to a press release, there was a separate street racing incident on Friday night, also on Center Street. The drivers of both vehicles in the Friday night incident were charged.

Grow up.... please!
He's so freakin responsible huh? Drag raving on Center St on Monday morning.
Well.... maybe this "good job" he has will think twice about the kind of employees they have. I now I would think about it.
As a matter of fact! We FIRED a kid JUST LIKE this one last week! So yea.. I KNOW I would think twice about it!
BTW... the kid we fired has already been involved in a fatal accident and STILL races around like a fool.
YOU were also NOT THERE to see what happened... being there within a few minutes doesn't mean you were there. As stated by someone uninvolved.... THEY WERE RACING! What reason does gitrdunn have to lie?
Oh... and be careful what you say to someone on here.... admissible in court. I'd print this up sugarsweet... so when these "thugs" come to take out their infantile revenge on you for speaking against their pathetic behavior.... you can show them where the conflict started...

Oh well if you were there and saw everything then you would know he wasn't racing because you can't go that fast on center st and he was probably four or five car links away from him but, they were side by side right down center st during lunch traffic though!!! Because anyone with a half a brain knows thats impossible for that time of day!

So he would never race, he would never lie, yet the accident happened, the cops are calling it racing, someone else on here is claiming to be an eyewitness to a race, and we should believe you. OK. Of course we believe you. Take a valium, try some decaf, take an English class with an emphasis on grammar and spelling, then get a clue.

I know both parties involved quite well and am in no position at all to say these idiots weren't racing. JPoulin - i know that you're just trying to stand up for your man. Well newsflash girl, HE'S LYING!! There were several eye witnesses that confirmed them racing, and well the police have also come to that conclusion. Accept the facts, it's all been laid out in black and white. Steven races all the time, and so does Pelletier. I know this from personal experience. If my husband was involved in something so stupid I'd probably stick up for him to, lying and all, just like you are for Steven. Well, good luck, thank God that everyone is alive! I hope that all whom were injured recover quickly and that Pelletier not be the only one serving time in jail. Steven needs to serve time as well as he was completely careless and just plain stupid!

So I think I have a pretty good clue of what happened especially over someone like you that probably only read the article. Nice attempt though to try an insult my intelligence level on one measly word because you couldn't think of anything better to say. Great job! Kudos for you dear.

I'm sure with you being there and all you know exactly how it went down. Whatever. And I didn't say "your" right because I took the time and studied in school. "Your" states ownership, "You're" is a contraction of You Are. Take a little time and actually learn English gooder.

Easy Gil gee what are the chances of 2 young men driving fast on center st?? hmmm pretty fricken high right. Steven was going to fast for lunch time traffic on center st yes but, he wasn't racing! He was on his lunch break and getting some fast food when the kid approached him to ask what he had in his car..people do that to him all the time. Then the kid thought he was cool in some crappy jetta so he decided to go flying down center st. All Steven was trying to do was get back to work before he was late. Like a responsible stand up citizen. Just because he was in a 2 door civic with a few stickers and an exhaust doesnt mean he's some ricer that races down busy streets like a bat outta hell. Steven is ok if you mean alive! He has a few broken bones, at the result of some incompetent drivers and I dont mean dozois I mean pelletier. I bet you have made a few stupid mistakes to GILLLLL so don't be so quick to judge! And like I said before I hope everyone involved has a speedy recovery. :)

I am the "Pelletier" kid and i was parked as he rolled thru drive thru and called me out his quote "so where do u want to do this"...and my passenger will tell u the same... i didnt race him i just simply took off out of the parking lot to show him i got a busted looking car thats pretty fast... a car pulled out in front of me and i dodged it...in my opinion if harris wasnt tailgaiting he could have missed the car as well...but i was going about 50 couldnt even see his headlights in my rearview...to me thats pretty close not allowing enough space to react in a situation like that....i am gald both of them are ok...but i got scared and ran...but i paid the price i lost my license and as you all can see i went to jail...oh well thats what happens....BUT ILL STICK TO SAYING WE WERENT RACING...just driving fast

It's probably just a coincidence that two young guys in wanna be sports cars are driving down the road side by side at a high rate of speed. It's probably just a coincidence that the other kid took off instead of waiting to report his side at the scene of an accident, seeing as how they weren't racing or anything. Harris has a job, and you vouch for him, so he must be ok. Everybody else has it wrong. Whatever.

Did any of you ever stop and think that maybe there is more to this story or this isn't the real story at all? Its so funny how everyone believes what they read...could you be anymore jaded? THIS IS THE MEDIA PEOPLE! I happen to know for a fact Steven is a responsible person, just for the record. Maybe you should ask HIM what happened before you all make assumptions, call him a jerk and say he should be thrown in jail...

First of all I dont know about the pelletier kid but Harris DOES INFACT HAVE A JOB!!! A good job. If he didnt have a job how would he afford his car. DUH. Second dont believe everything you hear or read. Before you make your opinions and assumptions remember that just because he was speeding DOES NOT MEAN HE WAS RACING!!!!!!!! If anyone is trash here its the one who left the scene like a coward. Harris is not trash or a punk and you people know nothing about him. Things happen it doesnt matter what your doing when your doing people can get hurt or die from the simplest things. Anyway I hope that Harris and Dozois have a fast recovery! <3 The other kid can get F%*@#!

Since I was not there, I cannot accurately comment on the events that unfolded today, nor will I. And if you were not there you too are just speculating. I drive for a living and speeding is the norm in L/A. Take a drive down Lisbon Street at 8 am, 50mph is about average at that time. Center street is no different, I could write a book a hundred pages long listing the streets that folks regularly speed on, If these two were street racing I am confident the police will do there job and they will be punished. But, tomorrow morning when your late to work, look down at your dash, I'd bet you're speeding as well, and just because there is not someone right next to you, the damage you could do is just as severe.

you are correct that people drive like idiots everyday. roads are not racetracks nor playgrounds and should not be treated as such. and we should all realize that there are more and more drivers out there: more elderly drivers, new drivers, truck drivers, motorcycle riders, buses, taxies, immigrant drivers, distracted drivers, and vacationers. there are just more people on the road then ever before and we must all be more courtious and aware of our surroundings. that is why we have new laws about street racing, cell phones, and seat belts. trying to legislate common sense. and when i'm going to be late for work, i call before i leave home and let them know so i don't feel the need to speed.

At what age does the brain develop??? Sounds like these street racers have arrested development...Of all the streets to pick to race, could they have picked a more busy one. Again where they think the laws don't apply to them, just the other drivers. Glad there wasn't a child involved in this accident, but I feel sorry for the one that had his car totaled and had to be extracted. Common sense tells me there was none on the part of the racers. Funny how others try to make the innocent in this look like the guilty one... Hope they lose their license for a good long time and have to pay restitution to the guy that was just pulling out of the parking lot and minding his own business.

Do you have any commonsense? Ok think about it! You go to exit a parking lot...you look left......you see a car but the speed limit is 30ish so it will take him an appropriate amount of time to get to where you are....OH YES! BUT THIS IDIOT IS DRAGRACING! How the heck was this guy to know that idiot boy would drag soemone down Center street at 11:44 on a MOnday! Come on! Get a clue! Ticket the guy that pulled out!? They ought to ticket you for speaking without COMMONSENSE!

However, that parking lot is right at the light. If your driving legally that distance is easily enough to pull out from. But if the people at the light are driving like lunatics, obviously not.
