Obama family starts vacation on Mount Desert Island

ACADIA NATIONAL PARK, Maine (AP) — President Barack Obama brought his family to the coast of Maine Friday for a biking and hiking getaway made even sweeter by a double helping of good news from Congress and the Gulf of Mexico.

Obama, his wife Michelle, and daughters Malia and Sasha arrived at Bar Harbor airport on a smaller version of Air Force One around lunchtime. Their dog, Bo, and staff had arrived earlier.

The Obamas planned to stay through Sunday to enjoy Acadia National Park's trails and scenic coastal views. No public events were planned.

The first family wasted no time taking advantage of the great outdoors. From the airport, the Obamas' motorcade drove onto Mount Desert Island, passing forested granite hills and ocean inlets before turning onto a narrow park road. Aides said the family rode bicycles on a trail along Witch Hole Pond.

Later in the afternoon, the Obamas were driven to the summit of Cadillac Mountain, the tallest peak on the east coast, where they gazed out over Bar Harbor, Frenchman Bay and Somes Sound. Malia balanced on a granite outcrop, arms stretched out in the air, as the family listened to a park ranger.

Obama's getaway from the Washington bubble he regularly decries came a day after the Senate sent him a far-reaching new banking and consumer protection bill that had been one of the president's top domestic priorities since taking office. It also came a day after BP managed to cap the well that has been spewing oil into the Gulf since April.

Obama no doubt hopes this jaunt doesn't fall victim to the family's travel hex. That would be the one in which events seem to scramble the plans whenever Obama has his wife and daughters in tow.

In a mere 18 months on the job, Obama has rolled up an impressive record of diversions, interruptions, delays and outright cancellations of planned family travel — all thanks to the nonstop demands of a turbulent presidency.

The visit to Acadia National Park follows last summer's Obama family trip to Yellowstone National Park and Grand Canyon National Park, which included whitewater rafting and peach-picking.

But that schedule was altered to include town meetings in Montana and Colorado, so Obama could address the growing furor over his health care plan.

It set a pattern, which has continued this year.

Their Memorial Day weekend in Chicago was overtaken by the Gulf oil spill. After the Obamas slept at their Chicago home for the first time in a year, the president got up and left for a daylong Gulf inspection tour.

That followed the Obamas' Christmas trip to Hawaii, interrupted repeatedly for briefings and comment on the attempted bombing of a Detroit-bound jet.

And it followed last summer's Martha's Vineyard stay, marred by the death of Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, whose Boston funeral Obama and his wife, Michelle, attended.

Then there was the planned visit to Indonesia, where Obama spent part of his youth. He'd hoped to show his daughters his old haunts. But the trip was scrubbed twice, first in March as health care neared its climax in Congress, then again in June because of the oil spill. It's now expected late this year.

The spill could further scramble the family's plans. In an NBC interview Thursday, Obama didn't rule out a vacation trip to a Gulf beach.

Despite two wars and an economic collapse crowding his plate, Obama's taken comparatively little time off.

According to a tally kept by Mark Knoller, a CBS News reporter long recognized by the White House as authoritative on such matters, Obama has spent all or part of 65 days on vacation, including days at Camp David. At this point in his tenure, George W. Bush had logged 120 days. That included 13 trips to his Texas ranch.

That hasn't stopped critics from complaining. GOP Chairman Michael Steele, for one, has been scathing — calling it incredible that Obama goes on golf outings while oil flows into the Gulf.

The White House dismisses such gripes.

Bar Harbor and its surroundings are famed as a summer getaway for the rich and famous, from the Rockefellers and Vanderbilts who built homes there, to Hollywood stars who often turn up.

Does it really matter...

Before you all go taking pot shots across the political aisles, you all need to focus on a bigger problem. Does not matter if you're democrat or republican. Both these parties have continued spending money that our country just doesn't have. Don't believe me? Check this out:

http://www.treas.gov/tic/mfh.txt

This link shows what the US Treasury lists as the USA's creditors.

Add to that our government continues to hand out billions....BILLIONS (depending what you google, estimates are between 4-15 BILLION PER YEAR) to governments that thumb their noses at us. Heck, we subsidize foreign competition with some of these handouts (Brazilian Agriculture, etc).

If you or I spent like this, we'd be standing before a judge with a room full of creditors in the gallery.

Instead of taking pot shots across the political aisle, maybe you all should direct your fire at our Congressional and Senate representation.

Democrats Solve Problems that Republicans CREATE

Democrats are the Party of the People. We keep our oath to serve the best interests of the People. Republicans hate average Americans and American workers. They call us "the lesser people" and call the unemployed "lazy, drug addicts, those who don't really want to work" and other insults. They are so out of touch they think a person can actually live on unemployment checks which average about $300/week. How do you pay a mortgage, your basic bills, and feed your family on that? You can't but Republicans don't know that and don't care. They are only focused on protecting corporations.

What has a Republican accomplished for Americans this year? Not one single thing. Is that who you really want back in Congress? Do-nothing corporate-loving liar Republicans?

Look closely who has worked hard for you and passed legislation to make your life better as we keep improving our economy. It's the Democrats. Unless you want to return to the Bush disaster years, better think hard about whether you want us to continue moving forward or whether you want to be back in a Depression in a year from now.

It's summer. Let the Obamas have a nice weekend in a beautiful part of Maine.

A little golf. Cigars. Lobster. Shelling. Views from Cadillac. Thunder Hole. The Jordan Pond House.

I wonder what the poor people are doing. To the victors, go the spoils.

Oh well "taxpayer" (like you're entitled? Everyone pays taxes)

It's like Forrest Gump said "stupid is as stupid does." Voting Republican is the "DOES" part, no matter what you call yourself.

Nowadays

Nowadays Voisine it truthfully is when you vote Republican and the party plank stands on repealing the UN charter on protecting children. This is a sad days because most of those who satisfy themselves and call themselves Republican use racism to do so. Then create a caste system much like the Communist channels which is a bastardization of the Marxist system. As Nixon says Republicans use that as a majority performance to appeal to the secret and closeted Communist community in America.

Taxpayer...

So if Republicans controlled Congress during Clinton's Presidency, they were responsible for lax national security leading to 911, right?! Oh, and they were responsible for the great tech bubble that Bush said he "inherited" from Clinton, right? You Republicans are so intellectually lazy that you're children. Really, Children.

AJG -- You're a Perfect Republican -- Beyond Debate

The Sunday Boston Globe had an article about psychological research into political beliefs. It pointed out that researched showed the more strongly Republicans believed something, the less likely it was they would ever reverse their belief, even if it had been shown to be incorrect. You must be proud to have placed yourself into the category of TRUE EXTREMIST -- someone so beholden to an ideology that they cannot even address issues objectively. You are clearly what's wrong with America. Republican: No lights here!

Republican Economic Lies

Economic Stimulus and the Conservative Lie

House Republicans, citing economic conservatism, failed to vote in support of the economic stimulus plan advocated by President Obama and House Democrats. Many of these Republicans proclaimed Rush Limbaugh as “keeper of the faith” of economic conservatism. Rush Limbaugh is both wrong and lying. Rush claims that corporate tax breaks are the only way to open up employment and recover the economy. Rush claims that American companies are taxed at the highest level in the industrialized world. He also claims that the economy will recover itself if left alone.

In all of these claims, Rush Limbaugh is, as usual, completely ignorant of history and absolutely wrong about the workings of economics. It is certain that Rush failed Econ101 just as he failed every other of his college courses. He is a shock jock, not an economist. Why Republican Congressmen usually in possession of at least one college degree would ever listen to Rush Limbaugh’s uneducated verbal confusion escapes me. Two of the greatest periods of American economic expansion in the past century resulted after American corporate marginal tax rates were raised to eighty and ninety-four percent. Higher corporate tax rates equal economic expansion- lower rates equal retraction and recession.

Rush Limbaugh claims that American companies are taxed at the highest rate (35%) in the industrialized world; this is an outright lie. The lie exists in comparing the taxation of other countries’ business after realization of subsidies and incentives with American corporate taxes before subsidies and incentives. Fact is, 68% of American businesses with five thousand or more employees effectively pay no taxes, recouping their tax burden in subsidies and incentives at the local, state, and national level. Of those who pay no taxes, many actually wind up in the black, receiving more value in incentives than they pay in taxes. But Rush and the neo-cons believe that only by reducing taxes on those businesses that already pay next to, if not in fact, nothing, will America’s economy be able to recover.

And, yet, many of these businesses, for whose legislative benefit Rush so loudly expounds in the name of “free” markets, are the ones who drove our economy into its current state. The economy has never recovered on its own; there has always been an external governmental stimulus involved in economic recovery. Those stimuli may have been in the form of a lowered federal lending rate, or a tax cut, or currency market buy-back, but economic recovery has always been presaged by government interference.

Voisine's picture

AJG

Again, you have spoken as another Republican who doesn't grasp the facts. Bush's tax cuts actually ushered a slide in economic growth. Clinton's tax increases ushered in the largest expansion of the American economy since the New Deal. Why don't you try to engage with reality instead of living in your ignorant RepubliCON fantasy world?!

TARP Was GEORGE W. BUSH -- Republican DENIAL OF REALITY

Too many people don't pay enough attention to see what the modern Republican party stands for, which is basically a roll-back of the Age of Reason, and a return to Fundamentalist Feudalism.

What little information these people get is generally from the MSM, which keeps up a drum beat of corrosive blather which skirts over just how radical the Republican party has become, but makes it "clear" that the Democrats are failing to resolve the country's problems. Never mind that the bulk of those problems come from Republican "solutions" and the failure to resolve comes from Republican obstruction.

These people don't pay enough attention to know what the salient facts are and are too lazy intellectually to think them through even when those facts are made clear.

Knuckle dragging Republicans posting here and the ignorance they reveal really makes me fear for the future, because people like those don't have respect for the fundamentals of democracy. It's why they loved George Bush.

Thank you Mr President for a national debt we can't pay

The Congressional Budget Office released it's Long Term Debt outlook a couple of weeks ago. We averaged a national debt that was around 36% of our Gross Domestic Product for almost 40 years. It was at 40% when Bush left office. After 2 years of Obama it is 62%. The CBO reports that our debt to GNP ratio will be 185% by 2035 if we keep the current health care laws recently enacted, and other various laws Obama has pushed congress for. 185% is unsustainable. Even if we just tweak the current laws, we will be lucky to get it down to 80% by 2035. The CBO originally reported that Obamacare would save us money....no as you will see in this report, they have backed off of that prediction and claim that it will cost us trillions.

This is a non partisan government agency. Read their report, this is not some conservative newspaper, it is the government itself.

Here is the link to the Congressional Budget Office long term debt report....from their website:

42 percent of Republicans aren't really patriotic. They pretend to love America only when they approve of the president. These traitors don't believe in democracy, in our nation's founding ideals, or in our flag. To them, those colors run. They are cowards.

Note, secession sentiment is MUCH stronger in the South than elsewhere -- 33 percent want out, compared to just 52 percent who want to stay. In the Northeast, "just" 10 percent want out, in the Midwest, its 18 percent, and in the West, it's 16 percent. Can we cram them all into the Texas Panhandle, create the state of Dumbfuckistan, and build a wall around them to keep them from coming into America illegally?

Oof. That's some serious neanderthal action going on. Gays can't serve their country, teach children, get married, or even have civil unions. That's the GOP agenda for gays, which makes the existence of the Log Cabin Republicans that much more of a mystery.

In all of these questions, respondents from the South are slightly crazier, and those from the Northeast slightly less crazier, than the average. In these two questions, the differences are particularly exaggerated. In the South, the sex-ed question comes out 39-56, compared to 47-45 in the Northwest. For the creationism question, it's 82-9 in the South, compared to 70-23 in the Northwest.

I must admit, however, that I expected fewer Republicans to back sex ed. Another big surprise:

Phyllis Schlafly is crying. That looks a lot more enlightened than I expected, likely because the economic reality is that few people can get away with single-income homes. But whatever the reason, on this front, there's progress. But that's where the progress ends:

Do you consider abortion to be murder?

Yes 76

Not Sure 16

Over a third of Republicans believe the birth control pill is abortion, which explains why nearly a third of them want contraceptive use outlawed. This is so wingnutty, it's hardly believable. But it's true, just a bare majority oppose outlawing contraceptives.

What we didn't ask was whether the 76 percent who consider abortion to be murder would advocate executions for women who have them. Since 91 percent of respondents support the death penalty.

One last question:

Do you believe that the only way for an individual to go to heaven is though Jesus Christ, or can one make it to heaven through another faith?

Christ 67
Other 15
Not Sure 18

Two-thirds of Republicans assume anyone that is not a Christian is going to hell. It certainly makes it easier for them to dehumanize their enemies, either real or perceived.

I'll address the presidential straw poll questions in a separate post.

THIS IS WHO REPUBLICANS REALLY ARE, IT ISN'T VERY PRETTY IS IT? This is the segment of America that would prefer it be destroyed if Republicans weren't in charge.

Welcome to Maine and Thank You President Obama for working to get America back on the right track. A Republican Congress from 1995 to 2006 and Presidency from 2000 to 2008, brought America two wars, neither of which could be finished by the end of Bush's term in office.
