Situation is very sad

I have been following with great interest the plight of the British couple from Arundel. This couple opened a successful restaurant in Wells and were able to pay off the mortgage on the restaurant and a rental property from the profits they earned.

Now comes our government bureaucracy.

We must keep in mind that there are some 12 million illegal immigrants in this country, sucking the schools and hospitals and the welfare coffers of many cities and states dry. Yet government officials tell that hardworking couple that their E-2 visas have expired and they must leave the USA.

This is a couple who worked hard, paid their taxes, had zero government assistance and, government officials, in all their infinite wisdom, basically said too bad, you must leave now.

However, if that couple could somehow claim immigrant status, there are government agencies that would give them money for rent, food stamps, free medical care and schooling and access to the Social Security system.

Am I the only one trying to figure this out?

Where are our elected officials? Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, Reps. Mike Michaud and Chellie Pingree — come out, come out wherever you are.

What a shame that things such as this can happen in this country. How very sad.

I'm surprised you want them

I'm surprised you want them staying since they're stealing American jobs and all. Or is that ok because they are white, English speaking Anglos?

I have a jolly good idea.

I have a jolly good idea. Send all of the illegals that Catholic Charities brought to LA back to wherever they came from. Our tax burden and welfare rolls would go down considerably, the accident rate and arrest rate would diminish and we could return to a near normal quality of life.

I think if we got rid of all

I think if we got rid of all the racist in the US we would be much better off.

mb - send all the illegals

mb - send all the illegals back? You forget they came from Atlanta for the most part, this is a secondary migration for many and they came to this country legally. Some may not like their presence or their assumed drain on our social services, but they are here legally. Most of the money they have received and that catholic charities received is federal dollars, so no matter where they settle you're still going to have the same tax burden, and if not here they would not be putting some of those dollars back into our local economy.

legal immigration

I wonder how long it takes and how much it costs, realistically, for someone to immigrate to the US legally. Please, keep the BS to a minimum, I'm looking for real estimations.

I have no Republican side

they knew their visa status. They knew when it would expire. There's much more to this story than this letter.
And the bias of the author is obvious in this statement: "...12 million illegal immigrants in this country, sucking the schools and hospitals and the welfare coffers of many cities and states dry." That's not true at all. Illegal immigrants pay taxes too.

Excuse Me??

Illegal immigrants pay taxes? How are they going to do that without a soc sec number?

other taxes

You think maybe they might pay sales taxes? How about when they register a car? Or maybe even when they put gas in that car? Nobody ever asked me for my SS card at the gas pump.

You gotta remember, Jon,

the color of their skin. These are 'good' illegal aliens, not some of 'those.' You've got to learn the right wing wacko pecking order.
