Sumner OKs fire engine, rescue plan

SUMNER — Fifty-two people voted on the purchase of a new fire truck with 47 voting yes and 12 voting no. The new International tanker with pump will replace the 1978 tanker that is no longer usable.

Sumner residents line up to receive ballots as they vote funds for a new Fire Department tanker truck.

Town Clerk Susan Runes said the town can self-finance the remainder of the funds from the fire truck carryover funds for two years. The total cost of the truck is $174,830.

Fire Chief Bob Stewart said the truck was made in Island Falls and he felt that the truck would be better than one that was made in the South.

The article asking for town vote on the ambulance service had three options and the current system won out.

The first option, which prevailed with 53 votes, was to keep the rescue service as it is, divided between Buckfield and Tri Town Rescue. The second option, which was to have only Buckfield Rescue, received 16 votes. Option C, which received one vote, would have made the town part owner of Tri Town with Greenwood and West Paris.

Lisa Buck from Buckfield Rescue and Norm St. Pierre from Tri Town answered questions. Option A will cost $13,360 per year but service will remain the same with Buckfield covering the east part of Sumner and Tri Town covering the west. Selectmen had made no recommendations.

A sum of $1,950 was added back into the budget to maintain the 13 street lights after some discussion. It was felt that the lights were there for safety purposes and should be left on.

This brought the total municipal budget to $705,150.

Runes said that revaluations were still being done, so taxes have not been determined.
