Maine churches split on gay marriage in Calif

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Maine church leaders are divided on a judge's decision to strike down California's same-sex marriage ban.

Wednesday's ruling affects only California but gay marriage supporters and opponents nationally are following the case closely.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland calls it "an insult to the millions of California residents" who voted to keep the definition of marriage as between a man and a woman. Diocese spokesman Marc Mutty says he anticipates the California judge's decision will go to the U.S. Supreme Court after appeals.

Maine's Religious Coalition Against Discrimination, with membership from 18 religious groups, praises the decision. Rev. Elsa Peters says it "honors the constitutional right of clergy and religious communities to solemnize same-sex marriages."

GAY MARRIAGE

OMG ... shut up catholic church and all your representatives... One would think you would all be in favor of this passing as most of you are either gay or pedophiles. Stop picking on the gays and lesbians and let them live the way they want to. As long as they are productive tax paying citizens let them enjoy the same benefits as everyone else. My brother is a gay man and a wonderful human being. He is part of society and always will be !!! What are people so afraid of ??? We have more to fear in life other than a neighbor and his or her partner. Get over your phobias and mind your own business

The majority voting on the minority

I'm wondering why we haven't had a vote to have all priests under surveillance ala "big brother". Its all fine and dandy to say that a moral issue should be voted on, ignoring the law, but how would the priests feel if my moral outrage over their molestation cases was brought to a vote and the majority decided that the molestation percentages were high enough that they all need to live under 24 hour surveillance? Would we be removing their right to privacy legally?? Beyond that the only way to not discriminate against gay couples if they are denied marriage is to remove the rights that only married people enjoy, there are over 100 of them including tax breaks and benefits.

the role...

The role of a federal judge is not to support the will of the people. His or her role is to uphold the US Constitution. An elementary course in civics would help people understand that.

Can the church please cann it!! SHUT UP!

Not all church goers are bad.. misunderstood maybe.. but this is another reason for the catholic church to shut thier mouth! They have thier own very REAL problems to deal with before weighing in on anything! I was catholic.. and they are an out and out disgrace in my eyes.. out of touch for years now! Period! If just half of these opponents would live thier lives like they SAY they do.. I bet the world would be a great place! Now just cann it and let these people marry already...the states that allowed this didn't perish or crumble.. get OVER YOUR SELF!

an insult?

Its only an insult if the law passed by referendum had been constitutionally valid. The justices fell that it isn't, and it will go all the way, but the Supreme Court may decide not to hear the case.

A liberal activist judge has

A liberal activist judge has negated the votes of 7 million Californians on the grounds that the gay marriage ban is unconstitutional.
Someone please explain to me how something (same sex marriage) that is not once mentioned in the Constitution cannot be banned on the grounds that it is unconstitutional to do so. How can the banning of something be unconstitutional if it was never in the Constitution to begin with?
