Man arrested after police find cocaine in his shoes

FARMINGTON — A convicted drug dealer was gellin' like a felon after police said they found 14 grams of cocaine in his shoes during a search at the police station.

William J. Tardif

William Tardif, 42, of Livermore went to the station late Saturday afternoon to obtain papers on a non-drug related incident, said Gerry Baril of the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency. He did not know the exact nature of Tardif's business with the police department.

Baril said Tardif had served time in federal prison for cocaine trafficking and was on supervised release when arrested Saturday.

MDEA agent Brian Ross was working a shift for Farmington police and recognized Tardif as a convicted felon and became suspicious of his behavior.

Baril said Ross contacted Tardif's probation officer, Matt Brown, who said Tardif was subject to random searches and prohibited from possessing cocaine. He authorized Ross to search him and his vehicle.

When Tardif took off his shoes and moved them away with his feet, Ross got suspicious and found plastic bags of powder in them that looked like inserts, Baril said.

He described the bag containing 12 grams of cocaine as looking like a plastic sandwich baggie filled about one third full, but flattened to look like an Odor Eater insert.

"In this case, instead of having an insert, he had a baggie filled with cocaine," Baril said. He said shoes are not an uncommon hiding place for drugs such as cocaine and heroin. "It's not something that's new. It's not an unusual place to search. It's pretty typical."

Tardif was arrested on a felony charge of aggravated trafficking of illegal drugs. The charge was aggravated because of the prior convictions, Baril said.

The trafficking charge stems from the cocaine being found bagged and apparently ready for sale, said Bonnie Pomeroy, Farmington Police secretary.

Tardif was scheduled to appear in court Monday but Baril believes the federal probation service will also seek action for revocation of his bail because of the violation of his bail terms. He is being housed in Somerset County Jail on $10,000 cash bond or $100,000 surety.

Racial Profiling

Ha ha ha!!! Did someone say cop bashing??? I have a few stories... Police are great....ha ha ha

Where was the hasmat response team??

White powdery substance brought into a government building by a questionable looking character and they didnt treat it like a possible Anthrax attack.. This is not good what happens the next time we have a real anthrax attack in our town and the keystone cops stick theyre nose in it thinking its cocaine... Should the city be liable for injuries incurred from poor police work and disregard for potential hazzards.. They didnt know what the substance was when they opened the bag.. They could have potentially exposed the whole facility to a chemical attack. I think we need better training for our boys in blue.. They had blatant disregard for the safety of fellow officers and the public by not isolating this bag and individual until a proper hasmat team could have responded... Hopefully the next time someone walks into the station with some white powdery substance , the police respond appropriately and seal off the station and call the hazmat team... we might not be so luccky next time..This time it was "medicinal cocaine" next time it might be the real deal...

Racial profiling???

This was a blatant case of racial rofilng if ive ever seen it ..Some whitebread hippie standing on the corner and the police think he is suspicious looking because he has long hair and was probably outside with like minded individuals celebrating the birthday of the late great Jerry Garcia.... What is this city coming to when hippies cannot even stand on the corner without being harassed by the popo.... Maybe cocaine gives good arch support.... This guy did nothing to provoke the cops except for standing on the corner looking white and hippyish and maybe a bit high.... when will we all be treated equally..Just because he wasnt wearing pants on the ground with a PHAT gold chain around his neck standing in the middle o da hood he gets stopped for looking "suspicious"... Yeah right,,, the cop just has it in for long hair hippie freaks with bad arches.. I hope they give him arch supports in jail.... For medical reasons... If any of us walked a mile in his shoes we would need arch supports too.. 3/4 filled baggie with cocaine gives a lot of support... What about the money.. Funny how the cops said they found drugs and that it was for distribution but didnt say they found any money.... I think they s getting themselves some custom inserts... Hells to da yeah!

Two problems here concerned KD

1. He wasnt on a street corner, he went into the police station on his own accord with cocaine in his shoes.

2. Is it really "profiling" if the cops were right? And they were right.

If there is a "Criminal Dumb*ss" award here in Miane, I hope he wins it.
