Vacant stores promoted as opportunities

NORWAY — Three recent graduates of Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School came up with a senior project to promote business development along Main Street.

Allison Nolan, Rachel Strauss and Caitlin Hanley hold collages they created to bring attention to the opportunities that exist for vacant storefronts along Main Street.

Allison Nolan of Paris, Rachel Strauss of Waterford and Caitlin Hanley of Paris created collage canvases for the windows of vacant storefronts. Their theme is: "This is not a vacancy, but an opportunity." The project was supported by Norway Downtown.

“We wanted to bring life to Main Street,” Hanley said of their work.

All seniors at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School must submit a senior project that shows independent learning, is a “real world” project and impacts others. Hanley said she and Nolan and Strauss hoped to draw attention to the plight of the downtown and get more young people involved in trying to promote the opportunities there.

Hanley said they chose Norway's downtown because of the active involvement of Norway Downtown in trying to revive Main Street, which is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Although Hanley and her friends frequent Cafe Nomad, she said there is little else for young people to come to on Main Street. Most of her friends drive to Portland for their shopping, she said.

Hanley said she would like to see boutiques and more restaurants and perhaps a music store on the street.

This is where your "opinion" comes in. I dont believe that stating the facts about a group of people's actions is abusive, obscene, racist, or hateful.

What I posted was entirely accurate and not racist in the least. If this certain group of people where white it wouldn't make any difference. It's the effect on lewiston I am concerned about, not the race of the individual. Evidently, you have a different opinion so you delete those opinions that differ from yours.

Preaves, I don't care what color these people's skin is, I care about the negative impact they are having on our community.

Actually, almost every person I know is tired of the negative impact they have on the community. I honestly think that more people in Lewiston would share my side of the issue than yours.

Making assumptions about a

Making assumptions about a group of people because of their race is the very definition of racial prejudice, which is exactly how I would describe your comment. And I am not alone in this assessment, as several community members alerted me to this fact by reporting your comment.

And no, assumptions are not facts.

Walk through downtown Lewsiton and you will experience "the facts". My statements were not assumptions, they are reality. And my comments are not based on their race, they are based on the negative impact that they have on our local economy and culture, not to mention the crime rate.

Guess what preaves? i don't care much for you either, and that is a "fact" not an "assumption"

Unlike the comments above I

Unlike the comments above I wish to congratulate these girls on taking the initiative to contribute a little something to Main Street. They all agree that they would like to see more little shops lining Main Street and have gotten together to try to make this a reality. Instead of sitting at home complaining about the few shops on Main Street they have taken an interest in improving the plight.

Something Positive

Way to go, girls! You should be proud of yourselves for trying to do something positive for your community. Don't pay any attention to the ignorant people on this blog who only use this forum to complain about their sorry little lives. Their redneck, racist little minds must not be able to comprehend an idea where people are trying to bring about change and improve their town rather than just sitting back and complaining about it.

Why preaves did you delete this?

How did this violate the posting policy? It is an accurate description of downtown Lewiston and it is my honest opinion.

Is "violating our commenting policy" subjective to your politics and beliefs? It should allow for all opinions, whether you agree with them or not.

There is no posting "policy",

There is no posting "policy", the "policy" is a joke. The "policy" changes from day to day depending on who's posting and whether they agree with the Spin Journal or not. For example, someone like Tron or Voisine are paid by the Spin Journal so they get to say anything without any recourse. Then there is another middle of the road "policy" for the rest of the "lefties". Then, for "righties" or independents, they get the least fair version of the "policy". In other words, since you spoke the truth, The Spin Journal came down on you unfairly. Your description of downtown Lewiston was 1000% on target.
