Fire engine goes up in flames

AUBURN — It’s almost a Zen question: If a firetruck goes up in flames, who do you call to put it out?

It happened in Auburn on Tuesday when a group of firefighters found themselves engulfed by smoke as they rode south on Washington Street.

Firefighter Richard Dionne was at the wheel when it happened. As it turns out, firefighters are required to call in a blaze just like any other, even if they are the ones on fire.

Once that was done, Dionne and two others, Thomas Hunter and Richard Brown, bailed out of the truck, the department’s Engine Two. They found fire beneath the cab and quickly put it out with their own equipment.

Nobody was hurt.

Fire officials said the trio had just picked up the truck. They were not en route to an active emergency when the engine caught fire.

The blaze was under investigation. The fire engine was towed away with damages estimated at $8,000.
