Disappointing distractions early on

Campaigns for the top office in the state usually have some slips, failings and misappropriated and/or poorly stated comments.

It’s how people can tell if the candidates are thinking about what they are saying. Missteps will be made and inappropriate things said when candidates are in front of the public as much as they are during a political campaign.

That’s no excuse for really poor form, but still, candidates are people and politicians say strange things. That should be no shocker to anybody observing Maine campaigns.

Democratic candidate Libby Mitchell’s handling of Republican Paul LePage’s joking inference that she is old was the perfect response — dismiss it decisively and move on.

Surely, LePage and his staff quickly recognized he had pitched her a big fat softball right down the middle of the plate early on in this race.

He ends up looking boorish and crude and she, well, dignified and, some would even say, “governly.”

To his credit, LePage eventually apologized for the joke apparently gone awry.

The most troubling thing about the ageist statement would be if it truly were part of a campaign strategy. According to a Kennebec Journal report, an earlier speaker warmed up the crowd at a Lepage rally the same day by making another joking comment about Mitchell’s age.

Perhaps, after some fast math, the fiscal conservative’s team deduced that if LePage served two terms as governor he would be nearly as old as Mitchell is now — i.e. you’re no spring chicken yourself ...

What’s more, making an issue of age in a state with the oldest average population in the nation doesn’t make sense.

The incident left everyone doing a double take and created a considerable campaign flap.

LePage’s campaign has since countered that Mitchell’s campaign has called into question his French-Catholic roots. Age, ethnicity and religion all seem quite divergent from the issues facing Maine these days.

This early negative trend will likely only push more voters to the ranks of the disenfranchised or further toward independent candidates Eliot Cutler, Shawn Moody and Kevin Scott.

Coverage of the back and forth between the Mitchell and LePage camps has had the unintended effect of making this seem like a two-candidate race, pitting the two traditional parties against each other.

As they struggle for name recognition, it’s hard to know whether the independents — Cutler, Scott and Moody — feel relieved not to be sucked into the mess or whether they miss getting the attention they desperately need.

The Mitchell/LePage disputes also raise the question of how easily the media — newspapers included — tend to focus on hot but inconsequential issues.

Charges of age discrimination and ethnic or religious bias are much easier to report on or fit into a 20-minute TV newscast than complex issues such as the state budget or the looming public employee pension gap.

In any event, we hope this flap isn’t a sign of what’s in store for Maine voters during the months ahead.

LePig Has Done Nothing, Hides From Voters and Media

LePig has done nothing in Waterville that anyone who can sign their name couldn't do. The City Administrator and council run the place. Each day Republicans prove that they don't want to engage in actual issues, they merely want to get fetish fix for the Republican party and its far right loon of the moment in Maine: Buffy LePig. He's called "Buffy" now because in point of fact, like all bullies, he's merely a coward at heart. He can't stand up to the media so he hides. Where has he been, eh wingnuts? Oh, that's right, the nasty, unfair "liberal media" are after him! Imagine, they're actually reporting on what LePig says! How biased and unfair! Wingnuts and their hero LePig are children. Go play in your sandbox and let adults solve complex problems that you're too scared, stupid or lazy to address. Republicans create problems that Democrats must clean up, the current economy thanks to Bush is a great example!

No

Tron, haven't you heard of confidentiality? Would you like your business aired on a public forum? On second thought...

What difference does any of Marden's employees receiving benefits have to do with anything?

Do you realize there are State of Maine employees, yes State of Maine employees, who get Mainecare etc. for their families?

tron's picture

Name ONE

just one.

thinkingman's picture

I could name several, but

I could name several, but confidentiality prevents me - I've had folks who work as clerical staff at the DHHS branch who were looking for work as their pay was low end and as single moms they also were eligible for Mainecare...but its mostly to cover their childrens healthcare, not full welfare benefits like some here get. I've seen people making over $14 an hour still be eligible for mainecare for their children.

At 44 minutes into the Republican debate Lepage said...

"Yes and Yes" to the Question, do you believe in creationism and do you think it should be taught in Maine schools. That alone should scare ANY thinking person. I am waiting for "Govt2Big" to answer on another article but he refuses, he is from the "as maine goes" website and I do believe that these guys are monitoring all newspaper forums to derail any true discussion about their T'Bagger, creationist Paul Lepage. "Why do people laugh at Creationists" go to You tube and type it in and see what lengths these idiots will go, to further their agenda. ROFL. Or just take a look at Texas and see if you want Maine to teach the same nonsense that they are REQUIRED to teach there.

LePage

He sounds and acts, just like his low life Waterville buddies. You can dress up some people, but they will always be rude, dishonest and ill mannered.

LePage is sinking

Here's what I would love to know from LePage: DO ALL OF MARDEN'S EMPLOYEES MAKE ENOUGH MONEY TO NOT HAVE TO RECEIVE WELFARE BENEFITS?

Lepage lied about what Manning said because he had to. LePage is part of the Tea Party and this is a group of people who don't know their arses from their elbows. They're busy blaming President Obama for all that George Bush did and there isn't one new idea coming out of these flakes either!

I'm voting for Libby Mitchell. Hands down. If the "independents" lose it for her and the Monster gets in, I will never forgive any of them!

Poll numbers meaningless

Rasmussen polls have a long history of pro-Republican bias. If I remember correctly and age is catch up with me, Rasmussen phone polls only call people with land-line phones. Well that means they get an unscientific sample and few young people.
The right-winger's prayer to split the democrats that they can characterize Cutler as a liberal when he was a registered republican and is a typical moderate Republican on issues will fail because he has the money to become known. Right now he's taking votes and staff from the Otten and Mills campaigns. These are moderate republicans that can't abide his extremism. He's lost a former RNC committee member from Maine because of his extremism.

Rasmussen IS a republican polling firm.

But its not Mitchell/LePage disputes.

Both the "age joke" and the false charge that Arden Manning wrote that LePage was not qualified for governor because of his French-Canadian heritage and that his is Roman Catholic came from LePage. This is all one sided. LePage says that he only wants to talk about jobs and the economy, but the only thing he really talks about are Mitchell's age, his lies about Manning, and how he was a creationist during the primary but now he's not or maybe he his. The Mitchell campaign has really not engaged LePage on these bizzare issues.

LePage Chief Executive of a Maine Government?? - Not!!

When Reading Paul LePage's Website he claims to be the 'Chief Executive of a Maine Government' - http://www.lepage2010.com/about/government/

As Mayor of Waterville, that might be true if the City of Waterville had a 'Mayoral' form of government. It doesn't. True adminstrative power, according to Waterville's City Charter, lies with the City Manager. It is the City Manager who prepares the budget, it is the City Manager who hires and fires Department Heads and City Employees, and it is the City Manager who "Ensure that all acts of the City Council and all laws, subject to enforcement by the City Manager or by employees subject to the Manager’s direction and supervision, are faithfully executed"

The Mayor can review the budget, but he doesn't prepare it - and it is up to the City Council to pass it.

What power does the Mayor have?

Simple. The power to veto ordinances passed by the Waterville City Council. The power to "Say No" (Where have we seen a lot of that, lately?)

And according to the City Charter - the Mayor needs to keep his nose - influence - out of the business of the City Manager, and the City Manager is to keep his nose out of Politics.

At least - that's what the Charter says. Whether or not it happens is a different story.

So is Mayor Paul LePage a 'real' Chief Executive of the City of Waterville really responsible for all his claims of tax saving, etc? Or a titular figurehead who can only 'Say No?' to the actions of the council?

He can't even veto a council action to remove the City Manager.

Read Waterville's Charter and you figure it out. http://www.waterville-me.gov/content/1233590307charter.pdf

There you have it folks, a

There you have it folks, a whole lot of "if's", "but's" and "maybe's"...thats some pretty inciteful (his spelling) stuff right there! Might want to check those poll numbers, Mitchell is going downhill at about the same rate as Cutler moving up the boards, but LePage still beats either of them. I can't wait till he gets elected and the liberals start in with the "But he only got 40% of the votes cast" (as opposed to Baldacci's last term where he earned the nickname "38"?). Now off to work for those who understand that concept.

tron's picture

A hate filled rant in the morning,

guess booby is all set for the day. And where did i say that my analysis was 'inciteful?' And the difference between Governor Baldacci and LePage appears to be that the governor campaigned among all the people of the state, whereas LePage has only campaigned among one small group. Perhaps LePage doesn't plan on being governor for all Mainers.

thinkingman's picture

Gosh and golly, I didn't

Gosh and golly, I didn't realize ANYONE with half a brain or more could consider anything I blogged as hateful. I simply pointed out the obvious, tron's wishy washy comments full of garbage....so when the dems lose the election he'll be the first to say see I told you so...but if you consider this hateful, I've got a message tron - grow thicker skin, because this is minor comparedf to some of the garbage you type...

tron's picture

If this is the tone of the entire campaign will depend

entirely on LePage. For the moment he seems content to solidify his support among the right wing wacko faction, feeling that a low plurality will be enough to win the election. For the moment it seems to be a successful strategy. It will depend on whether one of the independent candidates gains a following enough to splinter his opposition. The age crack is meaningless to his constituency, but he has to be careful. If none of the independent gains steam, he's in trouble. But it is also possible that one independent will gain plenty of momentum to overtake LePage.
