A path of destruction can been seen through Riverside Cemetery in Lewiston, where vandals roved through the 40 acres, knocking over or ripping up headstones sometime between late Thursday night and early Friday morning.

According to a member of the Riverside Cemetery Association's board of directors, about 150 gravestones were tipped over last night, among other damage. Some of the stones weigh more than 1,000 pounds and are 200 years old.

A visitor to the cemetery called the damage “heartbreaking.”

Because plot owners are responsible for each grave, the cemetery is not insured for this kind of vandalism. A groundskeeper estimated it could cost $30,000 to $40,000 to repair all the damage.

The Sun Journal will update this story.

We do not know that "kids"

We do not know that "kids" did this, it could very likely be the work of adults too. Either way, this is beyond disgusting and the depraved souls that knocked over the gravestones should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. It is sad when people have no respect for the living, but such an act against the deceased....shameless.

It is so sad

that some kids have nothing better to do that to hang out and cause such horrific damage. They have no idea of the depravity of their crime; I am sure that they look at it as just having a little "fun." What an ignorant thing to do. Wish they had been caught and forced to do some really hard labor. Maybe they'd think twice about doing something like this again.
