Three arrested in cemetery vandalism

LEWISTON — Authorities on Tuesday announced the arrests of three Lewiston men in connection with the desecration last week of one of the city's oldest cemeteries.

Police charged Shane Haskell, 20, of 98 Pierce St., Billie Coburn, 18, of 131 Horton St., and Jesse Macia, 18, of 125 Pierce St. with aggravated criminal mischief and desecration and defacement of a burial site in connection with widespread vandalism at Riverside Cemetery.

All three remained at the Androscoggin County Jail on Tuesday night. Haskell was being held on $1,000 cash bail; Coburn and Macia, each on $100 cash bail.

"They should be made an example of," said Marilyn Burgess, 72, of Leeds. "Being caught means they won't be free to do it again. Fixing those stones ain't worth a damn if they can do it again."

Burgess was among those throughout the county outraged by the weekend rampage at the graveyard that dates back to the early to mid-1800s. Burgess serves as the legislative liaison for the Maine Old Cemetery Association. She was at the Summer Street cemetery to check on the graves of her relatives when she heard the news.

"This senseless act of vandalism has really touched a nerve in the Police Department and in this community," Chief Michael Bussiere said in a written statement. "But one positive development has been the outpouring of support from those that have volunteered to help restore the graves at the Riverside Cemetery."

The suspects are alleged to have toppled more than 100 headstones sometime between Thursday night and Friday morning last week. Some of the stones were 200 years old and weighed 1,000 pounds or more.

Many were completely torn from their bases, including those marked with small American flags as veterans' graves. A few stones had rolled downhill and were found beside the cemetery road.

"This situation opened the eyes of a lot of people," said Kevin Ouellette, who has worked as groundskeeper at the 40-acre cemetery for 12 years. "It's reminded people that Riverside Cemetery is here. You've got families that have been here for decades. At least everybody is aware of the place again."

Ouellette extended heartfelt thanks to the dozens of volunteers who have been arriving at the cemetery in a steady stream since the story broke late last week. Several companies have called about helping restore and repair the stones, he said. He is hopeful that most of the restoration work can be done in a matter of weeks. Repairs could cost upward of $50,000.

Despite Tuesday's arrests, the case remained under investigation by the Lewiston Police Department, and additional arrests and charges are likely. Lt. Mark Cornelio of the Lewiston Police Department declined to release any details about the case, including how many other suspects the police are investigating or how detectives developed leads in the case.

Cornelio praised the efforts of Detective Lee Jones, who worked closely with the patrol division and the Community Resource Team during the investigation.

A search of Sun Journal archives showed that Haskell was arrested this past June on charges of assault and refusing to submit to arrest or detention, and in August 2008 on a charge of theft by unauthorized taking or transfer. Macia was arrested in June on charges of disorderly conduct and possession of an illegal drug.

HANG EM!!!!!!

Okay maybe not hanging but they should be required to pay restitution for the stones that have to be replaced and they should be forced to work repairing the damage done. SEND a clear message to those that did this and those that might. There is NO WAY that the people are going to just sit by and slap them on the hand for such a bogus crime.

Make them pay...

Maine law states that you are an adult if you are 18 and older, these punks, not "kids" should be held completely responsable for their actions, they should be made to clean and repair all damages untill paid in full and then let a jury convict them to the fullest allowable sentences...if they meet "Bubba" then so be it, they put themselves the that position.

I understand why some people make memorials out of graves

But personally, when I am finished with this body, you all can use me for combustible fuel at an electric plant, you can cremate me and use my ashes to fertilize the flowers in the park. You can even feed me to the pigs.

It doesnt matter because I will be gone. Burials and memorials are for the benefit of the living, not the dead.

Now, I respect your right to use burial and monuments if you need it.

There are people that will mourn me when I die, but the burden of visiting and maintaining my grave is a burden I dont believe they need to carry. It will only prolong the grieving.

Having said that, alot of the punishments you folks have suggested are unreal. My hopes are that they get a harsh sentence for what they did. Harsh enough to cause them to have a change of heart, and thus their lives.

I dont believe these kids were malicious, I believe they were drunk and stupid. I hope the court punishes them hard so that they will have no choice but to grow up.

We'll see what happens

Lewiston Police

Thanks to the LPD for the quick arrests of these three. Although there wasn't too much information released, special thanks to Det. Lee Jones and any other officers involved. If there are more culprits out there, I hope their freedom doesn't last much longer. Also to Mr. Skelton for the monetary incentive to help catch them. Sometimes a community has enough of this type of senseless violence/vandalism and bands together to put a stop to it. Lewiston, along with other local communities did just that. And the Lewiston PD did a great job getting these guys quickly.

These three cowboys should be required to repair the damages as part of their punishment, supervised daily by a law enforcement officer and a representative of the cemetery staff. Let them experience the pain and work on a daily basis of rectifying the damage they have done. And, when they've finished the project; throw their sorry asses in jail for 6 months.

Like it or not, cemeteries

Like it or not, cemeteries will eventually be a thing of the past. It simply is not a good use of land.

If since the beginning of time we had honored the dead by using the remains as fertilizer, we would still be doing so today. Cemeteries are just another example of people letting history dictate what they do today, even if it makes absolutely ZERO sense.

Pathetic.

What type of human being would do such a thing? I mean really have they never expierence a death i their family and if they have how would they feel if someone did this to their family members stones. Not only that the but messing with a person resting spot isn't a good idea either. These losers should have to replace all the stones they destroyed.... but god knows they prtbably don't have a pot to piss in. So, they should have to pay with their time and help beautify the grave yards they vandalized.

Oooorrrrrrr they can just

Oooorrrrrrr they can just eliminate the Cemetery all together. Seriously, how many people visit a 200-year-old grave anyway? I would wager that the majority of the deceased in any given cemetery are for the most part forgotten about. Not trying to be disrespectful and I feel for any grieving family member. I just think the whole idea of burying the dead and taking up acres upon acres to do so is ridiculous.

Like it or not, the way the earth is populating and the number of people dying every year, eventually we will have no CHOICE but to find a more efficient way to memorialize the deceased/ It will likely turn completely digital.

greiving sister

First off I have two baby brothers buried there and I make it a point to visit them whenever I can. I do it not only to pay my respects but to aslo feel closer to them. They may not be here physically but they are alive in my heart and my memories. Secondly the cemetary is 200 years old but people loose loved ones everyday so a little respect for greiving familes please. Thirdly I was devasted to see the destruction as I walked through the cemetary. To see their final resting place disturbed is like loosing our loved ones all over again. Where would you propose we do with the deceased. If you had lost anybody that you truly loved you would not be so cold-hearted. Everyone has the right to be remembered. Without people that have gone on before us we would not be here. We owe them that much.

There are plenty of other

There are plenty of other ways to grieve and "visit" lost loved ones. Just because we have grown accustomed to burying the dead in large plots, doesn't mean it is the most appropriate. If each person requires approximately 7’ x 4’ when dead, think of all the land that is used in order to store these corpses and headstones. It's a waste of space, period.

Remember folks, "diversity" enriches our lives, and don't you dare think otherwise.
