LEWISTON (AP) — Lewiston Mayor Laurent Gilbert Sr. will attend an international gathering of French-speaking mayors in October in Paris.
Gilbert is going to France at the recommendation of the Quebec Government Delegate to New England. The gathering marks the 30th anniversary of the International Association of Francophone Mayors.
The organization's seen as a French version of the Commonwealth of Nations to promote cultural diversity and use of the French language among member countries.
Gilbert will be attending at no cost to the city of Lewiston. Mayors from countries including Egypt, Canada, Morocco, Togo, Madagascar and France will attend. From the United States, Mayor Joey Durel Jr., of Lafayette, La., also plans to attend, it was announced last week.
