Florida pastor should relent on torching Qurans

Concern is growing in the Muslim world over the proliferation of “fatwas,” according to a recent National Public Radio story.

Unqualified clerics are popping up on Islamic TV and popping off on all sorts of subjects.

The latest involved a “much-ridiculed” breastfeeding fatwa which, according to NPR, “proposed that a woman could work alongside an unrelated man if she had breast-fed him five times.”

Hmmm. That’s as a child, right?

“You cannot do fatwa on TV,” one Egyptian lawmaker told NPR. Saudi King Abdullah has also issued new guidelines to rein in the “chaos of fatwas.”

Oh, how we wish the king could.

Actually, when you think about it, TV is fatwa city — meaning it is full of people making half-baked pronouncements about everything under the sun.

And the more outrageous the proposition, the more media attention it attracts.

Yes, we’re looking at Gainesville, Fla., where Pastor Terry Jones has parked a trailer full of firewood on the lawn of his church and mounted a sign: “International Burn a Koran Day.”

It’s strategically set for Sept. 11.

Jones, a former hotel manager, missionary and seller of used furniture on eBay, often packs a pistol on his hip and preaches to fewer than 30 parishioners. He told ABC News that he has lost half his congregation over his Quran edict.

Everyone from local ministers to Gen. David Petraeus has implored Jones to knock it off. Wednesday, Petraeus warned that if Jones persists, it could “endanger troops and it could endanger the overall effort.”

Unfortunately, Jones must feel he has received his marching orders from an authority with more stars on his shoulder: God.

God, of course, has been speaking to people for centuries. And for centuries it was difficult for those people to relay what they had been told to the rest of the world.

God was probably relieved by that.

What’s new is the way TV can inflate the ramblings of a marginal religious figure — some would say fruitcake — into an international incident.

Muslims in Middle Eastern countries have already taken to the streets to protest the burning of their holy book.

We are sure counter-marches will be organized in the U.S., some supporting pastor Jones and others, no doubt, condemning him.

All of which illustrates why sanity and reason have such a difficult time getting traction in our media-rich world.

If a pastor parks a sign on the church lawn proclaiming something reasonable, say “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you,” TV camera crews and reporters are unlikely to beat a path to his door.

Proclaim something wild, like let’s make a bonfire out of another religion’s holy book, and you become an international sensation, your stern visage beamed to millions of people around the world.

The good news, if there is any to be had, is that Pastor Jones has only managed to collect 30 Qurans so far for the burning.

And, of course, he has a couple of days to relent and lift his Quran-burning fatwa.

He’s made his point. Everyone’s riled up. His book is sold out on Amazon.com. His 15 minutes of fame is up.

It’s time to move on before people get hurt.

Come to think of it...it must be tough for certain liberals bloggers to not be on here condemning his acitons, given that just last week they promised to defend anyones right to free speech and freedom of expression. Gosh i so love the peace and quiet with them knowing if they post they will have to eat crow!

Since that snarky remark was probably directed to me,

I figured I'd reply. Both instances are the same. The imam has a right to build his center, the pastor has a right to burn any book. First Amendment applies to both, and that consideration overrides anything else. Both, however are ill advised, but hey, being stupid is not a crime, good thing eh, bob? Of course it is also stupid for people like you, and your right wing wacko friends, in conjunction with FOX News, to blow both of these incidents completely out of proportion, and in the process somebody may be killed. It may not be your intention, but it can very well happen. It happened with Dr. Tiller, and I would not be surprised to see it happen here. I wonder if you'll be as smug then.

Furthermore... why continue the battle of HATE? WHY? If he is so holy and godly-would god really truly want this or does he (cuz people are praying their butts are saved during the apocalypse)! why provoke? especially when we have men and woman fighting on that day. what is wrong with you people?

Queeen, two awesome posts,

Queeen, two awesome posts, thanks for bringing a little reality to the discussion. Unfortunately there are those who want to throw out the baby with the bath water and make it sound like this is a conservative movement, when inf act he's a lunatic with a small congregation - half of whom have left his flock becuase of these actions. This is nothing mroe than trying to bring attention to himself.

this is another example of

this is another example of the abuse of religion to promote the agenda of a misguided group. burning of the quran is absolutely disgusting. i would be just as disgusted if someone burned the bible. i mean come ON! and that is just that-why do people fear what they do not know and why do people want to continue to punish all muslims (beliefs) for a groups (terrorists) wrong-doing. NOT all muslims believe in this and furthermore we have working-class, english speaking muslims in OUR country (and who actually cares if they aren't or don't-as long as they are legit americans!!!). its like a slap in their faces! i hang my head in shame and in disbelief that this portrays us (the non-evil people/good americans) and for this to even be mentioned by Jones and for everyone that believes him-YOU ARE TERRORISTS!

Rather by Al-Qaeda for the security threats we've presented to Lebanon and Palestine.

There's more to history than "Yo Ho Ho and a Bottle of Rum"

And how many Muslims were attacked and killed by Christian Crusaders in their many invasions???

"yo Ho Ho and a Bottles of Rum" has more history to it than many realize.
I can't speak for the Crusaders, since I wasn't there, but the Church did go trhough a period of Reformation after the Crusaders incidents.
How many reformations has islam undergone?

When did the baiting start Mr Jalbrecht? This was agreat article, more of a condemnation of our media than anything else. The pastor is very american, he's using the same startegy as Mr. Gore.

What Terry Jones proposes to

What Terry Jones proposes to do is his right to do so, denied fire permit notwithstanding, guaranteed by the 1st Amendment. The same 1st Amendment that allows the imam to build his new mosque at ground zero. Both activities are legal; both are in bad taste and will trigger unwanted consequences. However, if Terry Jones were a muslim intending to burn a few American flags or a few Christian Bibles on 9/11, it is doubtful that most of those who are expressing their outrage towards the Rev. Jones would give a flying crap. It all depends on what's being done and WHO is doing it.

For every American Flag that has been burned over in that GOD FORSAKEN COUNTRY I say yes burn the Koran !!!!!!! why is it no one is up in arms when they burn our beautiful AMERICAN FLAG ? The RED WHITE AND BLUE AND STARS AND STRIPS still stand for something, something so many gave their lives for ???

Hymn@work's picture

A flag

A flag is just cloth. A book is just paper binded together. Both are man made. Same with the words in the bible and koran, the words may be inspired by God but are still put there by man.

Great editorial lousy comment

Monotheistic religions have little to be proud of. Baiting each other goes back more than a thousand years. But burning their holy books or their pastors is beyond the pale.
