Local Muslims: Rise of intolerance not happening in Lewiston-Auburn

Naimo Abukar, whose husband owns RMC Coffee and Groceries on Lisbon Street, said things have been quiet in the city in the short time she has been here.

LEWISTON — Inside the Baraka Store on Lisbon Street on Thursday, Somalis talked about the Florida Quran-burning planned for Sept. 11, which was called off and then reconsidered late Thursday.

Reshid Shankol, who was a doctor in Ethiopia and volunteers at the Jubilee Center in Lewiston, said local Somalis have been following the national anti-Muslim sentiment, but it's not an issue in Lewiston-Auburn.

Mohamed Heban, owner of the Baraka Store on Lisbon Street in Lewiston, talks with a customer Thursday afternoon. He said he had not seen the hatred toward Muslims that has been seen in other areas of the country. They feel welcome here and hope to make a living in Maine, he said.

“This is our holy Quran," said Mohamed Heban as he and his wife, Ardo Mohamed, waited on customers. "For someone to burn it is unacceptable.”

People came into his store wondering why Gainesville, Fla., minister Terry Jones would do such a thing.

"America is a peaceful country; America is a Democracy,” Heban said. “Our Quran does not allow us to burn the Bible or Torah. (Pastor Jones) is just doing it to make more problems.”

Even though the Quran-burning may be called off, nationally, intolerance of Muslims is growing this year as the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks approaches. The rancor is demonstrated by the Florida pastor's plans and opposition to a mosque near the 9/11 site in New York City.

Maine Christian leaders released a joint statement Thursday, saying they were appalled and saddened by the rhetoric.

Those who spread negative stereotypes or commit acts of violence “do not speak for the gospel of love, mercy and justice that we know and cherish,” said the statement from the Maine Council of Churches, Maine's Roman Catholic Diocese, the Center for Preventing Hate, the Episcopal Diocese of Maine and the Maine Conference of the United Church of Christ.

Lewiston Somalis insist that such discrimination hasn't been a problem here.

Naimo Abukar, whose husband owns RMC Coffee and Groceries on Lisbon Street, laughed when asked whether Muslim intolerance is on the rise locally.

“Not at all,” she said. “It's been very quiet.” Everyone is focused on getting ready for the Eid feast (marking the end of the fasting month of Ramadan) on Friday, a celebration as big to Muslims as Christmas is to Christians.

Abukar recently moved to Lewiston from Minneapolis. “I feel comfortable here,” she said. “There's a lot of Muslim people. You just fit in.”

Reshid Shankol, a former doctor in Ethopia who volunteers at the Jubilee Center food pantry in downtown Lewiston, said he spent Wednesday night and early Thursday morning praying at the downtown mosque.

He has followed the controversy over the Quran-burning and the opposition to building a mosque near the 9/11 site. He hasn't seen evidence of intolerance here. “I don't expect it,” he said.

"For the Lewiston people, it's not a big issue," Shankol said. "Nobody's worried about that. People are talking about the holy day." Local Muslims will celebrate Eid al-Fitr on Friday at the Central Avenue armory.

One local Christian fundamentalist who has burned Harry Potter books for promoting wizardry said he supported the Florida pastor's plan to burn copies of the Quran.

“I'm all for it,” said Brother Doug Taylor of the Jesus Party, an inner-city children's ministry. “We live in America. We live in a democracy. He has the right to burn the Quran on his property. He isn't carrying out an act of violence.”

Maine Christian leaders disagreed, saying talk about burning the Quran or spreading Muslim hatred is contrary to the Christian gospel and values of religious freedom. Americans of every religion share the losses of Sept. 11, 2001. People of all faiths, including Muslim Americans, lost loved ones or ran to the World Trade Center in Manhattan to help that day.

The Rev. Jill Saxby of the Maine Council of Churches said Maine seems to be more tolerant than the rest of the nation. Religious leaders want to keep it that way.

“We're concerned,” she said. “The anti-Muslim rhetoric is not completely unknown in Maine.”

The council released its statement to encourage religious tolerance, mutual respect and civil discourse. Talk of burning texts held sacred by other faiths helps spread the atmosphere of fear, Saxby said.

“It's dangerous for a civil society, and does nothing to fight terrorism,” she said.

Finally!! Intelligence!

OK... HERE is where I have to jump in. Appaloosa appears to be the only INFORMED person in this discussion. The facts are right there. The two religions were once one. Though raised Catholic here in Lewiston, I am completely non-Denominational because I found the truth from within. Religion in and of itself is a divisive thing. It is a closed-minded approach to understanding the majesty of the world around us. It has caused countless wars. Open your minds as well as your hearts. Knowledge and self-searching will make us more 'God-like'. According to the Bible, in Genesis 5:1 "This is the written account of Adam's line. When God created man, he made him in the likeness of God." and in Genesis 9:6 "Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made man." I don't think it was about physical image. They say we only use less than 10% of our brain's capacity. Just read the police log for evidence of that. Couldn't the phrase "in the likeness of God" represent our potential as humans? Shouldn't we strive to be informed, to discover, to seek out truths? To honor God by using the talents we've been given would be of highest praise. (Matthew 25:14-30)
If we, as humans, could come to an understanding that gathering converts is not a competition, organized religion and the corruption that stems from it would disappear over time. We'd have a more harmonious existence, cure more disease, and have a lifetime to live up to the image we've been created in.

A brother to whom?

I am not sure to whom or what Doug Taylor is a brother to however, he is a menace to and misrepresents Christianity. It is sad that some Mainers are actually letting him minister hate and intolerance to their children. Where are these peoples heads? He may not tell these impressionable kids that Muslims and the Koran are bad, but his actions speak a lot loauder than words. If he has a thriving ministry of hate and intolerance, then Maine and Lewiston has a greater problem of racism and bigotry than they are willing to admit. There comes a point in civil liberties where one's rights cannot deny others of theirs. Once some Americans (and Mainers apparently) get that idea digested in their little minds, then America as a whole will be a better place to live and raise kids.

Look.

I work with many of these people in our community at my night job. They are also shoppers. Their holy book should not be burned by this mad man! Anyone with any eduction or humanity will not attack an entire religious belief system for the actions of some that claim the same following. Think about the many different acts of horror and terror done in the name of god. We cannot fault all that follow under the Quran as terrorists. If we did so them all forms of organized religion would be under fire and hated perminently. Look at history people! This man in Florida should be stopped. If he can't be, then prosecute him!!!!!!!!!!!

No other religions

No other religions book(bible, torah) preaches murder to non believers.... Every other book preaches tolerance. The quran preaches intolerance of non muslims. It preaches its own set of laws and punishments, NOT to obey the laws of the land.

"Anyone with any eduction or humanity will not attack an entire religious belief system for the actions of some that claim the same following."
But its ok for an entire religious belief system to attack an entire society of people simply because they dont follow the same beliefs?... This is what Islam preaches. They claim the Quran preaches peace, but anyone who has read it and understands its use knows that what was written later supercedes its earlier teachings. All of the later teachings preach intolerance and duty to convert non muslims, Teaches lying to progress the strategy of spreading Islam and to kill infidels..

Have you?

I will bet my bottom dollar, and last Dunkin Donut, that you have never read the Koran. Until you have, it is a suggestion that you do not make a fool of yourself and stop listening to those with an agenda of hate and intolerance. The media, especially the right wing media, misquotes and takes text out of context. Just as it did to get a black woman fired from the USDA. It is not fair and balanced at all. In fact it is scary what they put out as truth and Americans are gullible enough to believe it without checking the facts. I am a Christian however, in the first Gulf War (Bush I war to distract the public from Neil Bush's being invesatigated for his dominant role in the Texas Savings and Loan failure that cost taxpayers $8 billion... hmmm seems Bush II bailed out banks too) I was assigned to a security force made up of Americans and Muslims and a few Hindus. Guess who prayed for each and every American while we were there? Wasn't the Christians. It was the Muslims! So before you spread half truths and untruths, I suggest you read the Koran. Have a Muslim explain it to you. I am sure you haven't even read the Bible as there are numerous cases of intolerance cited in our Bible as well. Christianity is not ALL love and acceptance. The Old Testament portrays a ruthless and vengefull God. It is better to be thought of as ignorant than to prove it.

You Didn't?

You didn't ask that question did you? Really? Want a chance to retract it? One is a Holy book. If you read the Koran you would know it is the same as the Bible you ,may or may not be familiar with, up to a point. The flag is a symbol representing your yacht club, your sports team your local city, state or nation. One is a book the other cloth pennant. Are they both charged emotionally? Sure they are. However, burning Korans in Florida adds yet another symbol to the flag. That of religious intolerance and INJUSTICE FOR ALL! By trhge way, 100 times more people vote for American Idol than our President. More people go to sports events than to church. It amazes me Americans call themselves Christians and have never stepped foot into a church, but they prfess to know ALL ABOUT the Koran and can't quote their supposed book of religion. Burning of Korans will be though of when foreignors look at our American flag. That may be after they kill a few soldiers to make a point, you birn our Holy Book and we will retaliate. Just as the Christians did during the Crusades. So think about it. The Crusades killed thousands more than 9/11 and they were killed on their land. More people have died in the name of Christ than for anoth other cause! This includes the Manifest Destiny Doctrine used to attempt to rid North American of it's indiginous people! When that did not work, we incarcerated them on reservations. Right in MAINE also. Auburn was known as the fields of slaughter where British soldiers and settlers wiped out entire tribes.

concerned KD's picture

Sooooo?

Are you saying that you support the retaliation of killing Americans for burning (a copy of) a book? Arent you an American? Why would you think you are exempt from this retaliation? Or are you a muslim first and an american second? Does it really say that burning a copy of the Quran is punishable by death? What does the Quran say about killing to make a point? Is making a point worthy of Murder? Does the actions of the crusades really justify the retaliation against Christians of modern day? When did GOD appoint you and your muslim brothers the judge and executioner of whom deserves death as punishment for being a disbeliever? Please recite YOUR Quran that you claim to know so well and answer these simple questions. If Islam is so peaceful then why would it appear that every insult punishable by death? Is that peace?

Ishmael, the father of the Muslim religion was illegitimate. Abraham thought Sarah was too old to concieve so he slept with his slave, Hagar.

I don't believe that the illegitmate is the son of God. And so the argument goes.

The only probelm I see is that America does grant freedon of reigion to everybody, but Muslim countrys believe Isalam should rule and Christians should be put to death.

After this Abraham did concieve a son by his wife, Issac.

Issac is the father of Judism, and Ishmael is the father of Islam,

Jews and Muslims claim that Christ is not the son of God, therein lies the problem, and Islam wants to take over

sept. 11th is a day for

sept. 11th is a day for remembrance. its not about us per se-but about those who are lost, injured, or suffered because of the attack from a terrorist group. 9/11 is for the families that were affected and will never be the same. i still don't understand with those who agree with jones to announce this disdain and hate on a very important memorial day to TAKE away from those affected from the tragic events that happened on this day. THAT is a slap in the face people!

we are punishing a group and categorizing ALL muslims as terrorists or the ones who attacked us on 9/11... because we fear what we do not know. its sickening. NOT all muslims are terrorists. NOT all muslims attacked us on 9/11. i just wish people could see and realize this and just maybe be a little more open to being open-minded.

lets continue hate with hate? because of a certain group? that is what al-qaeda wants.

concerned KD's picture

Actually according to mohamed

Actually according to mohamed all muslims DID attack on 9/11... And if you denounce it you are NOT a good muslim and should be whipped.. If all muslims are not terrorists then it is time for them to speak out and act against their fellow muslims who are terrorists.. Its up to them to correct the wrongs going on within the muslim communities.. If they dont then the rest of us will and it will be indescriminately done. The real slap in the face is the double standard they hold non mulsims to.. They dont recognize any other religion as valid and preach to convert the world to Islam. Not live and let live but convert or die.. That is in the Quran.....

queenhoneeybee's picture

the same could be said for

the same could be said for other religions... i.e. christian, catholic, etc. the "my way is the only way-my way or the highway" mentality. there have been people in the past that have killed over religion/convert/"my way or the highway mentality" and history repeats itself so it will happen again and again. however-we don't penalize those religions because of the offenders and their actions. why is it so different because of being muslim. double standard is exactly as you put it. "If all muslims are not terrorists then it is time for them to speak out and act against their fellow muslims who are terrorists.. Its up to them to correct the wrongs going on within the muslim communities. If they dont then the rest of us will and it will be indiscriminately done." the real slap in the face is the double standard of what you are holding ALL muslims to. the assumption that they need to apologize or get down on their knees and beg for forgiveness for something that many don't even agree with or even had no part in (be it al-qaeda). the assumption that all muslims need to be apologetic for the rest of their lives because of what terrorists have done on 9/11. no one has to answer to us and certainly for something that they have not done. period. no one owes us an explanation. no one has to even explain themselves. NOT all muslims are terrorist. just like in the bible and many other holy books-SOME people manage to twist and turn words around or take something from a sentence and not the whole paragraph to appease their own beliefs. there are some people in other countries that take it to the extreme, extremists... of course. that would be beliefs that have been passed down from generation to generation and practices and all beliefs... but NOT the quran.

No intolerance because only Muslims service the area

The Lewiston area primarily is made up of Muslim shops, so certainly they would not see too many non-Muslims airing their concerns. In fact, one person says: “There's a lot of Muslim people. You just fit in.”... "People are talking about the holy day." Of course, because the majority of people going to the shops and to this area in general are Muslim. You will not have intolerance from people who share your religion and your way of life.

I'm personally opposed to the book burning. It is not Christian and makes other Christians look bad. But that is no where near as criminal as Muslims who are making threats at the pastor or saying they will kill Americans because they disagree with a book burning. This is coming from Muslims around the world. I think peaceful Muslims need to address those in their own midst who are violent. They have not done enough to change the perception of the whole religion.

I'm opposed to the mosque center in NYC because it IS disrespectful towards non-Muslims. there was a case like this years ago when some nuns wanted to build a monastery on or near a former Nazi concentration camp. Their intentions were good and many Catholics died in the camps too, however the pope at the time, JPII, said no to the nuns. He knew it was disrespectful to the Jewish faithful. The imam in NYC needs to take example. We should NOT appease terrorists by building a mosque center that glorifies Islam near Ground Zero. That is what the terrorists want. The developer of the mosque even said there are already TWO mosques in that area serving the community so there is NO NEED for a larger center there.

You should actually read the Quaran.

So if a christian activist group started bombing mosques, the church all the way to the vatican would publically excommunicate those responsible, denounce the actions taken by the few... So here is my question....Do the muslims excommunicate or condemn the radical islam extremists when they commit atrocities against America? Is there any form of internal governing over fellow muslims.. No they dont and there isnt .. The reason is simple.. The teaching of the quran tell them to support those who act to turn the world into a muslim world and that any non muslims are sinners against allah and that it is every muslims duty to support the conversion of the world to islam... So if you speak out against fellow muslims actions to rid the world of the non muslim sinners then you are not being a good muslim and in turn are sinning against allah yourself... However if one does speak against his fellow muslims(like the Imam did referencing the 9/11 terrorists) that is ok because the Quaran tells them that as long as they are lying to mislead non muslims to further the progression of Islam then it is ok and strategically beneficial to the conversion of the world to Islam and they will still be considered a good muslim.
So lets look at what has transpired in the past few days.. One small group of individuals decides to possibly burn the quran(didnt actually do it, just considered it). So in retaliation for the thought and threat of carrying out a quran burning. The muslims of Pakistan( for example) riot in the streets chanting death to America and have American flags burning in the streets..( and these people we consider allies). So instead of chanting death to the pastor and his small group of worshipers they chant death to America.. Isnt this holding all Americans responsible for the actions of a few? If a soldier in Afghanistan or any american traveling in the middle east is harmed in retaliation for the actions of these floridiots, is it justified in your eyes? Wouldnt that be holding the wrong people accountable? So why do you rush to the defence of the muslims instead of standing with your country?

Really?

It is alsao stated that it is the responsibility of Christians, followeers of Christ, to be "fishers of men". The Bible also states it is every Christian's responsibility to spread the Word and convert those the encounter to Christianity. If you had any knowledge of the two religions, they are the same until they come to Abraham. The man God asked to kill his own son, his flesh and blood. And you say our God is a loving and accepting God? Maybe Abraham realized the order from God was wrong? Maybe he exercised his "free will"? Those that want to attack Islam should at least read the guide book, not listen to Pat ROBERTSON OR ANY OTHER NUT JOB!

If Maine FINALLY caps welfare

If Maine FINALLY caps welfare benefits with a lifetime limit like Georgia and other states, guess what?! All the liberal BS aside, they're here for one reason only, lifetime benefits. In all fairness though, the Somalis are not the only ones that are drawn here for our generous and un-ending "entitlements". Maine needs new blood in Augusta, and a good start would be Paul Lepage.

I Totally Agree !

Election time is just around the corner and all I have to say is this.....

If he or she is in office right now then VOTE FOR ONE OF THE OTHER GUYS FOR HEAVENS SAKE! They have proven over and over that they cant get the job done so why dont we give someone else a chance to govern. Reason why we wont is simple. People actually vote Democrat or Republican instead of voting for the individual. Even when they know their choice is not in the interest of the people they will still vote for the Party. It's about as smart as trying to change the will of the people in Afghanistan or Iraq. They have lived this way for over 2000 years but we seem to think we can just go right into their lives and convert them to our way of thinking. I wonder how successful these same people would be if they went into the Southern Bible Belt and tried to convert all the Baptist to Catholics.

melora's picture

Where does money come from to start all these businesses

I've seen many articles on the Somalis's and I'm all for helping people who are in dire need. All of them are refugees with no money, yet the last article I read claims there are 30 businesses owned by Somalis's in Lewiston now, all catering to the Somalis population and Islam. ?? So where did these individuals who no money get thousands, hundreds of thousands of dollars to start up all these businesses? Americans in this area are suffering financially. Many have lost their jobs and can not get loans. Yet how is it refugees with nothing in their pocket can suddenly get huge business loans? I would like to know where (and I think the public has the right to know) where this money is coming from? Is it free money for immigrants? Is it a special Maine-related grant?

Plus, who is zoning this area? Allowing one culture and one religion to overtake an entire area (30 shops is as big or bigger than an entire mall) seems extremely discriminatory to me against non-Somalis or non-Muslims in the area. One article said the shops owned by non-Muslims don't get business because all the Somalis's shop at the Muslim-based stores instead. So instead of helping the local economy, they are only helping their own community and even sending funds overseas to their families. IT is not coming back into the community.

I have nothing against religious freedom or helping others but it seems extremely unbalanced that huge amounts of money are being possibly given to the Somalis and that they can monopoloize an entire business area, which does not support the entire local community
