Maine bear hunter attacked, hospitalized by quarry

TOWNSHIP 5 RANGE 7, Maine (AP) — A Maine bear hunter is recovering from injuries suffered when he was attacked by a 300-pound bear he was hunting with dogs.

The Bangor Daily News says 37-year-old Ryan Shepard of Shin Pond was hunting with three friends and dogs on Monday when he was bitten in the arm and leg in the unincorporated area of Penobscot County in northern Maine known by its map coordinates Township 5 Range 7.

Officials say Shepard's injuries were not life threatening.

Monday was the first day of Maine's bear-hunting season with dogs.

Deborah Turcotte of the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife says that before he was bitten, Shepard fired his weapon at the bear after it charged past the dogs, mortally wounding it.

Hard to phathom anyone could,

Hard to phathom anyone could, with a straight face, actually think that hunting with dogs (ie -- you let them do the tracking and the treeing because you don't have the skill to track or scare a bear yourself), or with bait (gee, you sit and wait for a hungry bear to feed on the crap you're serving up so you can blow them away while they're chewing) is sportsman-like. I'm sure there's some effort and strategy involved by the humans but it still doesn't make it sportsman-like. It's be like me serving you up a yummy dinner 30 days in a row then on day 31 I put arsenic in the pudding. You didn't see it coming and you don't stand a chance. Yes I am smart and sneaky and I have my trophy (you) but I am NOT a good sport.

RIGHT ON

I could not have said it better, truly.......right on!

I am going to guess and say

I am going to guess and say you are not a hunter. Why don't you try doing the hunt yourself and then say how easy it is.

Jo's picture

What did he expect?

Don't hunters expect their prey to fight back?

northwoods's picture

how about this

May I suggest to anyone that think baiting or using dogs is not sporting to try doing it. Not with a guide but a do it yourself hunt.

Sorry the bear died

Hunting bears with bait or dogs is certainly the easy and unsportsman-like way to kill bears. This bear gave the hunter a taste of what real hunting is at it's core - a battle for life; as with all bait and dog hunting, it was not a fair battle. Sorry the guy got bit and I'm really sorry the bear died.

Is the AP having trouble making ends meet?

It looks like they got volunteers from the 6th grade to write this. Please Google "dangling participle".

Or...

You could look it up in your own dang style book!

you want to "save money"

Buy some ramen noodles.
Prefer to harvest your own food: plant a garden.
Prefer natural meat: ever heard of chickens? You can raise your own chickens....
Don't get me wrong, I am not opposed to eating meat, I like a good steak just like the next guy.
What I am saying is I like bears, I like bears better than most people I know....
and I personally believe if you want to play with the big boys you gotta act like a big boy. Bear bites you after you shoot him, I say "Good on YOU bear!!!"
Stupid hunters, bears are for cuteness, bambi's are for food!

northwoods's picture

not that much

I hate ramen noodles, I have a garden, and would rather eat ruffed grouse or woodcock than chicken. I do agree with you I like bears more than most people and I really don't like bears that much.
Bears are not for "cuteness" they are serious animals that can do damage to property and person.
I said it once and I'll say it again, glad he's ok and nice bear.

Hunting Bear

I believe it is for the same reason all mammals are hunted. It is to control their population. Too many deer or anything die a cruel death of starvation. Too many bears and we don't have some of the other animals we enjoy. The food is a side benefit. I don’t agree with the baiting and trapping. Waiting for the kill can be a cruel process in of itself.

koalalover's picture

GOOD!!! Serves him right.

In this day and age there is no reason to be hunting bears "for food". Therefore, that would mean you are hunting them for sport, and that's just wrong in my world.
I support the right to arm bears!!!
and I hope the bite hurt A LOT!!! Since the bear died.
You wanna play with the big bears, I hope you get bit again!

northwoods's picture

you say

"In this day and age there is no reason to be hunting bears "for food"." Well how about to save money, perfer harvesting your own food, perfer natural meat, or just like bear meat. There a couple of reasons for food.

Very, very few people hunt

Very, very few people hunt bear without bait or dogs. I don't really see what the problem is or what that has to do with him getting bit.

If you don't want to play fair, you deserve to get bit.

How does one get hospitalized

How does one get hospitalized by a quarry? Did this reporter graduate from high school or take any grammar classes? Are there any editors that work at the Sun Journal?

AP Stylebook guidelines

My high school grammar teacher would still make ask the question, "How does one get hospitalized by a quarry?" Grammar does count.

Keep it up and we may plumb the depths of your cranial quarry.....

As a hunter, I've never had

As a hunter, I've never had anything good to say about people who bait bear or use dogs. I guess Ryan found out he wasn't chasing a bunny.
