AUBURN — School officials have canceled all school open houses this fall after the teachers' union informed them that, to protest their lack of a contract, no teachers would attend.
The school system and the union have been fighting over a new contract since fall 2007, with health insurance the most contentious issue. The last contract expired in August 2008. After three failed mediation sessions, the two sides will go to fact-finding this fall in an attempt to break their impasse.
Since teachers are public employees and are not allowed to strike, the Auburn Education Association said it has only one way to show its frustration with negotiations: by doing only what the contract says, and nothing extra.
Union President Timothy Wegmann said attending an after-school open house is something extra. "It's not a choice we want to make, but we feel we've been backed into a corner," he said.
Open house attendance is not specifically listed as a required duty in the contract, but Superintendent Tom Morrill said it's been an established and expected part of teachers' jobs for years. In a letter to Wegmann, Morrill said he would not file a grievance with the
Maine Labor Relations Board because he didn't want to spend scarce
public money on a legal battle, but he reserved the right to take legal
action as necessary in the future.
"It's just very disappointing that they took that specific job action," Morrill said.
He said open houses are a good way for parents to meet their children's teachers, for children to share their school with their family and for teachers to talk with families about homework, policies and classroom expectations. Although the school system will try to work around the loss of its open houses, Morrill called the union's refusal to attend open house "an unnecessary and disruptive barrier."
"In my view it does harm," he said.
Wegmann said teachers would continue to provide a quality education to their students. He said open houses likely wouldn't be the only event teachers would refuse to attend this year if negotiations didn't improve. Although he could not offer specifics, he said, "Things will be cut out."
Teachers routinely volunteer to chaperon school dances, attend school celebrations and oversee clubs, even though those duties aren't required in their contract.
Coaches and some other club advisers get paid for their work. Their duties are not extra and could not be cut.
Auburn school open houses are typically held just before or just after the new school year begins. In lieu of open houses, Morrill said parents should feel free to arrange a meeting with their child's teachers or to contact them by phone, e-mail or letter. He said teachers would also send home information that parents should read. They can contact the teacher if they have questions.

I feel like a lot of you are
I feel like a lot of you are responding to this article without knowing anything.. you're saying teachers get a lot of vacation time, like the entire summer. My dad is a teacher, and let me tell you, he definitely does not get the whole summer off. He is frequently going into the classroom working on things for the upcoming year to make the start of the year better for his students. Also, the workday you say that they work from 7 or 8 until 2 or 3, thats just when they're IN the classroom teaching. You forget to include when they get home and correct assignments, grade exams, and spend extra time helping the kids that just don't understand the subject matter. You say the teachers keep asking for MORE... is healthcare too much to ask?? I don't understand where you guys get your anger from-- look at the situations in, I think it's New York? where the teachers are getting paid to sit in a back room doing nothing, playing games because the Unions won't allow them to get fired for doing things that are pretty much ILLEGAL! Auburn teachers, even if they could, I don't believe would go on strike because they want to be there for the kids. If any of you with the negative comments ever go to the schools and teach for a day, or even an hour, you would realize the hard work and commitment, and the passion you need for it! There can be some tough days with all of the responsibility put on teachers such as the eyes and ears of abused children, identifying learning disabilities, increasing self confidence, trying to instill a good attitude in young children to better their future.. all of the CEOs and President Obama.. they all had teachers once upon a time that taught them the things that they know today, and teachers are the reason that there are successful people in this world. I think enough pay to support themselves isn't exactly so hard to ask.

How to blow your own horn Educ8tor. Your entire diatribe helped prove the "greater then though" attitude that is quite prevalent in the education system. Your misguided unions, which many of you seem to follow blindly, have helped create a sytem which is adversarial at best.
When our children were in school, we had problems with one of them. You were one of the teachers. My wife and I knew that the problem was with our son's attitude, and we worked feverishly to communicate with his teachers in order to keep him on the right path. Not once did we blame the teachers until we found that they would tell us what we wanted to hear in front of others, such as "absolutely Mr. and Mrs. ..., we'll be glad to communicate with you anytime you want. You can e-mail, call or whatever. We can make this happen."
Well, the only method of communication we seemed to receive was smoke signals, because that was all that was being blown up our @$$&$! A couple of teachers were great, and to this day we and our son are eternally greatful. He is a hardworking, loving family man with a good career thanks to some hard work and tough love, thanks to those who followed thru with their word. The rest of you, you included, simply collected the paycheck. I could go on and on, but I'll just let you continue to blow your own horn, because you spew nothing but senseless noise. Keep up the good work.

First of all tightlines, it's "thou". Second of all, I'm not blowing my own horn as you claim, but simply giving the facts of our profession. And for your information, which shows you know little about me, other than your own perceived and one-sided experience, I'm not part of the Union for various reasons. I am ALL FOR merit pay and would have no problem working for a school system where you only stay on if you perform. I don't claim to be a superhero, I don't claim to be perfect or infallable. For everyone like you who has an axe to grind, there are others who would claim just the opposite...but that is neither here nor there. I'm glad your son is successful and that you can attribute that, in part, to some of his other teachers. To say that I simply "collected the paycheck" is unwarranted and just downright vindictive. I have received many thanks from parents and students and that's much more powerful to me than your response. That is all I have to say to you and all other naysayers towards any teachers on this blog.

Would you like to respond? Login or create a new account. You'll need to verify your account before you can respond.I have been teaching for 14
I have been teaching for 14 years now and truly hesitated as to whether or not to waste my time responding to ignorance, as it is unlikely that those critics outside of education will ever have a clue nor are they willing to get one. However, I cannot resist, in defense of not only myself, but also, my fellow teachers. Let me first be very clear that I do NOT agree with teachers refusing to attend open houses. Although it may not be in their contract directly, it is one of those “additional duties” that every teaching contract implies, no matter what district you work in. By doing this, teachers are simply hurting the students. I myself could not refuse to do that. With that being said, if you want to know what it’s really like for teachers, just ask my husband and son how easy I’ve got it…not. Unless you are in a “helping” profession, how many of you have to say to your child when they ask you to play with them “not now honey, I have a ton of grading to do”? I teach at the high school level (no disrespect to those at other levels, as I know you have your own extras and time issues) and teach social studies, which is the second (behind English) most reading and writing intensive course at our school (maybe equal with the languages). My tests aren’t simple multiple choice and fill in the blank, they include and tend to more often be written and performance based. My teaching day starts at 7:00 and contractually ends at 2:30 but often continues from 8-11 at night, after I have done my wiferly and motherly duties (no offense to male teachers). So, those 10 weeks off I get in the summer…oh wait…someone out there doesn’t know their math…it’s really 8 calendar weeks but for me more like 6 as I take a week to close up my classroom and tie things up and go in a week early to get ready for the start of the year nearly ½ of what many of you truly think, are what I consider compensation for all the hours I work and DON”T get paid for! Fortunately my husband makes decent money, so I don’t have to work in the summers. However, we live from paycheck to paycheck with no money in the bank and we don’t spend money on anything substantial. And no, I DO NOT get paid for having the summer off. When the rest of you work a week, at the end of the pay period you get what you worked for…we get ½ of that at the time we work and the other ½ over the summer…if we got paid just to have the summers off…who wouldn’t become a teacher…am I right? As for the adage “those who can do and those who can’t teach” those of you who truly believe that wouldn’t last one day in my job…my husband hears it all the time at home and says if he was teaching, the first time a kid mouthed off to him, he’d grab him by the neck and…well…he knows he could never hack it. Teaching is an art and we go into it because we want to help kids. If I was in it for the money…well…I wouldn’t be. Without my husband’s pay I would not own a house and 2 vehicles and my son certainly wouldn’t be playing hockey, a sport he truly loves. And for those of you who feel we make too much money…I have a bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree, and my certificate of advanced studies (which I didn’t really choose to get as we have to keep taking classes to keep our teaching certificates)… my husband has one year outside of high school and makes more money than I do. Granted he’s a welder and he receives “hazard pay”…well being a teacher has it’s own hazards…just in different forms (if you have no patience, are not creative, can’t handle major attitudes, can’t, and don’t like dealing with people who think their kid is the only one in existence, teaching isn’t for you) Many teachers I work with either chose not to have their own children or have been divorced because their job got in the way. Just as it may not be fair to say that because I have more education and am in a “helping field”, that it doesn’t make me more valuable…well, just because my husband can get hurt doesn’t make him more valuable does it (In this day and age, whose to say I couldn’t be in one of those schools where there is a school shooting someday or have a student threaten my life because I wouldn’t put up with his crap)? If I shouldn’t get to decide that and you naysayers shouldn’t…then who should???? It’s not about being more valuable, it’s about doing what’s right for both teachers and students! I could get another job, but I enjoy what I do and should be fairly compensated for my time, just like in any other job.

Here's a better idea. Let each look out for their own. Enough of this Socialist “gimmie gimmie”. EARN what you have. Stop looking in your neighbor’s yard with a sense of entitlement. Teachers, you already make what you deserve, these are tough times and your job is no harder than anyone else’s. Stop begging for sympathy and start TEACHING. Perhaps if you WERE to "produce" more doctors, lawyers, CEOs, the economy wouldn't be in the crapper. Produce more THINKERS and fewer WHINERS.

Now subtract the cost of an education for a masters degree and what portion of that $27 hourly wage is taken for health care costs and the personal expense that teachers take on for the sake of they're class room (ie... books , materials, and many other items). Just visit the average classroom and ask a teacher how many items they personally provide for the class room. I assure you it adds up quick. In my oppinion your comments on this blog make you look like a jacka** and if you want to express your oppinion with so much vigor. This is an ignorant comment. Most teachers have second jobs to make ends meet during the summer. You really should try to get to know a teacher a bit better or better yet try substitute teaching. Maybe then you can appreciate what they do for our kids and society. Most teachers desire to be a teacher is from a desire to do something for the greater good of our society. To mold our children into something that would make our grandparents proud of sacrificing theyre generation for, Proud to say thats what we were fighting for, a better world for our young. Teachers want to better our world and make a difference in a childs life. Pro athletes want to better they're bank accounts and get they're own brand of shoe. The ARROGANCE appears to me to be your own issue. Where would YOU be without teachers? Do you have an education? DID a teacher ever make a difference in your life?

Investing in our teachers is an investment in our childrens futures. Maybe the school board should chaperone dances and extra events that the teachers have been volunteering for all this time. Maybe when they have to put in the 15 hour days before returning home in the evening they will understand all that our teachers do for our children. How many of us would put in the hours these people put in. 8am-3pm =7hrs then they go home and have to spend hours correcting work, making lesson plans, planning the extracurricular activities that they volunteer time for. This could lead to 12 to 15 hour days plus any weekend time they contribute. Then on top of all of that they still have their own families to tend to. They on average probably put in up to 18 hours a day and that only leaves 6 hours for sleep. Then they get up each morning and do it all over again. School board needs to wake up and see that these are some of the hardest working people in our community and they contribute the most to our childrens educational and social development. What happened to no child left behind. If we dont treat our teachers as they should be treated then our children are left in the dust. If health ins is the big issue here and the school board isnt willing to give them what they need, I dont blame them for sticking to they're guns. They have the right to stick up for themselves and they're families. They're job takes them to a place, every day, that exposes them to probably 75% of all illnesses present in our community. They are as much if not more succeptable to seasonal illnesses and all other illnesses present in our community than most medical professionals. If a school has 300 plus students that means germs and illness from 300 different households walk into school every morning. That increases health risks for all who work in the schools. This fact alone should be enough to convince people that they need the best health care we have to offer.

I have 3 kids, 2 have graduated from the Auburn school system. And for the last 15 years, I have never been unhappy with a teacher. All of the teachers I have dealt with have all gone over and above.
If your boss asked you to come in an hour early and stay an hour late and quite often come back after supper for a couple of hours. Leave your family after supper and go back to work.... and not get anything extra??? Yeah that would sit well with you.... I'm sure.
They do this and seem to always enjoy it. They meet with parents for open houses, concerts, art shows, conferences and other things I'm sure. They go to sporting events, some even working at them. All of this for nothing extra. And summers off??? Are you kidding, most teachers have to work a 2nd job in the summer.
Do not call these people greedy. They "GIVE" for a living, they give an education, to your children, to the future of our community. They DESERVE more. For those of you who think they are the "bad guys" you have NO clue. And if you think starting pay at $31,000 for a college educated person is a lot... I only have started a job at more with just a diploma, so they are NOT over paid, especially when you have student loans to pay.

Honestly, you are comparing yourself to an athlete in the entertainment business? Their salaries are generated and distributed using PRIVATE MONEY. The NFL is a PRIVATE organization and owners determine how to spread their wealth however they deem fit. What these teachers are doing is STRONGARMING TAXPAYERS into boosting their personal gain, and that is WRONG.
I also ask you, if you cannot get hired without experience, how do you get experience in the first place?
I am so sick and tired of people making claims that, because they made the CHOICE to go to school, their time is any more valuable than another’s. I happen to know quite a few folks with a little more brains and a HELL of a lot more common sense than a lot of scholars. Just because you have a degree doesn’t give you a free pass to dictate what your employer pays you. If you don’t like it, find another profession.
Oh and by the way, PARENTS "produce laywers, doctors, policemen, firemen, congressmen, presidents, etc etc.", not teachers.

You have any IDEA what the average hourly wage of a Police officer or Fireman, or active duty military person is? A hell of a lot less than $20.00/hour.
Unions are KILLING this country. They force corporations to outsource decent paying jobs, they force employers to drive up costs of consumer goods, and they strong-arm taxpayers into paying OPUTRAGOUS wages.

The fact that the school committees through out the state have the final control on all financial items by law is usually what causes local problems....they make a take it or leave it offer and if it is too drastic then the teachers or police or firemen leave it. There is NO binding arbitration on financial matters, but there should be. This would give both sides a chance to work together to resolve these matters. However, remember one thing and that is that the process of negotiations is NOT A FAIR and BALANCED process as we would think. Offers are made from strength and unions can either accept them or not, if not they have to try to force the school committee and the public to realize their issue which is not one of greed, but of fair play. This can not be done until all options in the negotiation process have been used. This is why the city has taken so long. They do not wish anyone to know what is happening. Just like those awful issues of "PERSONNEL" matters which happen behind closed doors, they take negotiations even in its final stages behind the same closed doors. I say let the teachers strike, just dock them their daily pay for every day they don't work. The public hates to have their kids at home during the fall, winter and spring, so it shouldn't take long for a resolution. Just for you information, Teachers can strike, but not in Maine, ask people in Pennsylvania about teachers strikes. Reason says work together and do what is fair, but he knows that won't happen as someone has to prove they are the tough guy on the education block.

Teacher...no sympathy here. Went to school 6 years to be a teacher. Good for you and when you come down from your pedestal you might find us "regular people" quite tolerable. No one is forcing you to be a teacher. You choose to be. Did you choose this to earn a significant salary? Surely NOT but I bet yours is more than many in your community. F'N unions F everything up. Privileged elitists...try working in the real world. Do you know how many people are out of work these days? Do you know how hard it is to get work these days? Educated or not, many families are feeling the brunt of this economy and you want, want, want more. I hear LL Bean and Wal Mart are hiring for their distribution centers. Perhaps you could get better benefits working there.

Actually, I used to work in retail and made much more than I do as a teacher. Do you research before you make comments you know nothing about. Managers at Burger King, Sams, Walmart, Shaws, Hannaford, CVS...the list is endless. So, many in my community make MORE that I do. PLEASE, come teach for a day and see what the real world is all about when we have YOUR kids in the classroom. All I want is to educate the people of tomorrow so we can live in a better world than we do today.
I only stated my opinion and thanked you for reading it. You in turn replied in a very rude and offensive manner, lumping all teachers into the same category you have established without any knowledge. I feel sorry for you g2bn2n. It must be very hard to live such a bitter life.

Teacher....I thought your comment was great, I for one applaud you and thank you for teaching the children of tomorrow!! Its too bad that jealous people have to write crap on here just to irritate others. I am an Auburn parent and actually moved back to auburn 14 years ago so my son could get his education here. For the most part I have been very happy about it...I am sorry the open house's had to be cancelled...as my son is entering ELHS and I was looking forward to "introducing" him to high school. I hope this gets resolved soon because who knows what else we will have to sacrifice... I dont blame the teachers for today but I saddened that it came to this. We owe the teachers of today for our future of a brighter tomorrow!!

Why are these people teachers? They are not there for the children. They are there for themselves. I'd be quite upset if I were a parent in Auburn.

I get so frustrated with how there are so many issues with school deptartments. My children go to Sherwood Heights. Every year my children look forward to the open house. But once again, due to people who have to make things that much more difficult on these poor teachers, the children are left with another change. I love the school my children go to as do they. But really, why is it these teachers put so much of their hard work and effort into providing a great eduction for these children, and politics seem to get in the way forcing teachers to cut back on things that are important to the children. Seems to me, there should be no negotiations when it comes to Auburn teachers. These teachers work hard and deserve to be get rewarded for their strong efforts. The last place this city or any other city should be cutting back on is in the school deptartments. These teachers do an amazing job and should be rewarded! We instill in our children a sense of stability and routine, why is it most of us can provide that for our children in our homes but yet the Auburn School Dept can't seem to carry that on in the schools. (constant change) How is that beneficial to our children? These children are our future, these teachers help give the children the tools they need for the future. So you tell me, why is the school dept so eager to make change that will could harmful to our children!!!!

"Teachers get far more benefits than the regular guy on the street, many who can't even afford health insurance."
...So, the solution is to reduce and/or eliminate health benefits for those who have it (and begrudge them while doing so) rather than working to improve benefits for all?
What an optimistic and constructive approach...

There's a long list of things that educators do that are "extra" and beyond the contract. I suggest the big, bad "union" add one item every three months to their "work to rule" list until people like Eagle, Just a thought, K0NPHL1C7, DonaldR, and mikec run screaming to the school board and demand that they bargain in good faith and settle this contract.

The regular guy on the street, YOU, probably didn't go to college and invest in your future!
Teachers are already underpaid! Consider what athelets get and that's just for playing a game??? PLEASE. Teachers are the future (kids) and we waste our money on stuff like people from other countries? We NEED to take care of AMERICA ONLY! We are a stupid people............

Would you like to respond? Login or create a new account. You'll need to verify your account before you can respond.I am a teacher and agree
I am a teacher and agree that I get compensated well for my job. On the same note, I went to college for 6 years to earn my teaching degree. That cost alot of money. I did that so I could get a good job, like teaching. If the "regular guy on the street" wants the same benefits, go to college to get a better job! "The regular guy on the street" most often works set hours and days. Teachers work anywhere from 10 to 12 hour days, often 6-7 days we week and YES even in the summer. Our contract says we only have to work when kids are present, so from 7:20-2:30 at Jr high/High School Level, (something like that) and 8ish to 3ish at the elementary level. Many teacher are there up to an hour or more earlier and even 2 plus hours more later and work weekends and vacation. WHile it is true we get summer off, we still get the same salary.
We have to work with students who come from homes where parents offer no support. It is a very stressful job with many rewards, at the same time education can be disheartening when members of society do not treat us with the respect we deserve. Should the open houses be cancelled, in my opinion, no. But at what point is enough? We are working over 50 hours a week without compensation. The teachers in Auburn are not asking for a pay raise or to cut their schedule. They want what is right for them. They all went to school to better themselves so the can provide for their families.
It is not a good situation for anyone. Once teachers began to do the non-compensated things, such as chaperoning dances and such, they were taken advantage of and now people expect it and when teachers decide to stop, they get scrutinized for it.
Oh, well. Thanks for listening and I hope everything works out for all invloved.
have a great-NON MUGGY DAY:-)

And Auburn teachers wonder why they garner so little public support? The union should be ashamed of itself, as this directly affects the students.

I agree that the school board is the problem, I can't believe there are not other areas where cuts can be made.
However with that being said.. the teachers are not going to garner much support if this is how they deal with it.. If the only reason you doing this job is because of the pay and benifits then maybe you should be doing something else.

There are NO cuts being made under the plan being discussed. I'm not sure where that perception came from - I only wish people would come to these meetings and pay more attention.
The savings would go into teacher's salaries, not be cut from the budget.

Self centered greed??? Sounds to me like if the city played fair the TEACHRS would be at the open house !! That being said both sides should realize the hard times TAXPAYERS are facing I for one CAN NOT afford another tax increase! Teachers have to ralize there is only so much blood you can get out of a rock !! They need to remember this ! The City needs to trim the school budjet else where !!! Starting at the TOP !!!! When things get better then Im for better contracts!
