PORTLAND — Known for her bold statements and even bolder attire, pop diva Lady Gaga arrives in Portland Monday afternoon to stomp for a political platform she launched last week during the MTV Video Music Awards.
The Washington Post reported Sunday night that the celebrated musician will speak out at a political rally aimed at pressuring Maine U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe to vote Tuesday in favor of the annual defense appropriations bill that includes language repealing the law prohibiting gays and lesbians from serving in uniform.
The law is enforced by the infamous "don't ask, don't tell" policy" established in 1993 by an executive order of then-President Bill Clinton.
According to The Washington Post, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid plans to hold a cloture vote on the annual defense appropriations bill Tuesday afternoon. Collins and Snowe have yet to announce how they plan to vote.
The D.C.-based newspaper reports that a group led by Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., are threatening to vote against cloture to protest Reid's plans to add an immigration-related amendment to the defense bill, arguing that unrelated amendments should not be added to a bill setting military policy.
Gaga will join representatives of the Servicemember's Legal Defense Network, a legal group assisting troops impacted by the law, during a rally at 4 p.m. in Deering Oaks Park.
The Portland Press Herald reported Sunday night that Aubrey Sarvis, executive director of the Service Members Legal Defense Network, said Lady Gaga is a passionate supporter of repealing the policy. She went on to say that the musician views Maine's two Republican senators as holding critical votes to breaking a threatened Republican filibuster.

thanks you Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga doesn't need to promote herself---she meant and personally felt every word she said ......Thank you ......

Just because you put the word "Lady" infront of your name, doesn't make it true. Was she wearing a necklass or some kind of collar today? I'll bet she was. How do you like them apples? Btw, if she's a he...then she's not a lesbian. He's just a crazy straight guy that dresses up in meat. Dressy Jessie after a visit to Bourques.

First, who cares whether she's male or female? She's not asking us to make that our business. Why does it matter? Secondly, I have an adult son with severe disabilities and while he does not go out by himself, he can sometimes seem strange in public. Naming names is nasty. I would take you to task if you ever named my kid in open forum. What he wears is not your business.

You are a BULLY. You try to end every discussion by picking something about the other person that you think is a flaw, thus negating their argument. It doesn't. It just shows you for what you are. Try debating the points instead of going off topic. Close your eyes if necessary. How stupid, to imply that someone's argument is or is not valid based on how they look. Wow, you've made me really mad tonight.

I always?? Actually, I've never said anything about how anyone looks. Thank you, try again. I don't care if Gaga or your son look "weird". If you would calm down a bit, maybe you could process this better. I don't care a bit if he is a crossdresser. Why hide it, though? Why not come out and say....yup, I'm a man. What I have a problem with is the huge, over the top gimmic. I have gay friends...some hate her, some like her. The ones who hate her, do so because they believe she puts their cause back. Dressing in meat and acting all crazy isn't doing anyone any favors. Deep breaths OJ.

Your post was all about how she looks like a man and then you named a local man who sometimes wears a dress, which seems to personally offend you even though it has nothing to do with you. And then you deny it????? WOW

Deny what? I deny that I attack people "always", as you put it. I happen to have known the local man for many years. Maybe it was in poor taste to mention him. But he's not ashamed of dressing up....so why are you?

She is a pompous, self-important bimbo, but the media follows her and if this is one of her pet causes, why not trot her out, along with the crowds that follow. That most of them are 12 years old is problematic, but from the looks of it, there were a few actual voters in the crowd as well.

Thanks go to Lady Gaga for being an advocate of equal rights for all people but especially for giving her support to the repeal of "Don't Ask Don't Tell". Let all citizens serve without fear from the country they wish to serve! Doesn't anybody that wishes to serve in the military deserve enough respect for being willing to stand in front of a bullet or bomb? This really shouldn't be such a big deal but sadly it is. Realize that gays and lesbians willing to serve do so for the same reasons any straight person would? There's no shame in that. They deserve our respect, our thanks and our support. Please support the repeal of DADT.

Like I posted earlier, it never was a big deal before politicians decided to make it an election issue. DADT should die but as posted by someone earlier, it will only go back to the old ways...it won't be a big victory for anyone. Maybe that's the way it should be.

some gay people want to join the military because that's what they NEED to do and feel it as a life mission. I don't think gay folks join to "hook up" .... I personally don't think the military is a wise career choice but its a job that needs to get done.

Send Gaga out there to fight all the wars, people will run the other way when they see her. I sure would not want her to represent me for anything. And contrary to what they say, all gays are not the only ones in the military that act as interperters.

Even if Congress succeeds in repealing the "Don't Asik, Don't Tell" policy enforced under federal law Pub.L. 103-160 (10 U.S.C. § 654), there remains the sticky (no pun intended) issue of Article 125 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So, even if DADT is repealed, military servicemembers can still be prosecuted under the UCMJ which is based under 10 U.S.C. Chapter 47.

No value judgement in my statement; merely stating fact. If homosexuals want equality in the military, they need more than just the repeal of DADT.

Gays fared better in the military before DADT. Everyone knew... only the most juvenile cared. It was when Washington decided to make a social experiment of it that it all became a circus.
