MECHANIC FALLS — Tall grass and a handwritten note greeted Brenda Manchester on Sunday as she visited her husband's grave.
The unkempt grass grew in a perfect rectangle above the plot where Walter Manchester was buried six years ago. In the middle of grave site, the note sat, scrawled along the side of a broken and upended planter.
“If you want to lie about a beautiful well-improved cemetery, you'll always have God to answer to,” the message stated.
“I was shocked,” Manchester said Monday, three days after the Sun Journal published a story about her complaints over the rules and upkeep at Maple Grove Cemetery in Mechanic Falls.
She called police and her family. Her sons and daughters told her to stay out. The police said there was nothing they could do.
“I'm scared to come in now by myself,” said Manchester, a daily visitor to the cemetery for years. “I guess you could say I'm near the end of my rope.”
Last week, Manchester said she was upset that the cemetery rules were too harsh and arbitrarily enforced. She produced more than 100 signatures on a petition calling for changes. She also said the gravestones were cleaned too rarely and her husband's plot was only mowed three times this year.
David Ferland, who wrote and signed the note, disagrees.
“It's people like her who bash the cemetery that put a bad taste in my mouth,” said Ferland, who mows the grass at Maple Grove and 14 other cemeteries. “There's always one.”
The neglect of Walter Manchester's plot and the note were an expression of his frustration, he said. He mows the Maple Grove plots about nine times a year, he said.
His note stated: “Guess I will only mow your plot 3 times a year.”
He also added a postscript: “P.S. This is personal. You will not have your stone pressure-washed.”
On Monday, Ferland stood by the note. And Manchester stood by her count. She insisted that her husband's site had been mowed only three times.
“It has been 33 days since it has been mowed,” she said. “I write everything down.”
Leaders of the Maple Grove Cemetery Association said Monday they were unaware of Ferland's actions.
“We gave him permission to write a note saying that he mowed more than three times,” said Lucille Hodsdon, who serves as the association's assistant treasurer.
Were his action's appropriate?
“I don't know,” said Hodsdon. She counseled Manchester to talk with the association's president, Carroll Stevens of Oxford.
The Sun Journal was unsuccessful in numerous attempts to reach Stevens.
However, Hodsdon said Manchester should not be scared of going to the cemetery.
“Why should she be?" Hodsdon said. “I'm not.”
Ferland said he, too, doesn't want to end the peace Manchester finds when she visits her husband's grave.
“I'm not trying to take that away from her,” he said.

Well...
Like any other customer; if she doesn't like the groundskeeping service supplied by the cemetary association, she is welcome to take her business elsewhere. And all the necessary work this undertaking would entail.
Really, people. It's a lawn. I'm sure Walter didn't even notice or care that his plot had not been mowed.

Mowing everyone else's grave and leaving her a hand-scrawled note on a piece of trash? I don't know Mr. Ferland but I suspect he is a better man than that. What gets into a person to make them do something so nasty?

this is what she gets for trying to get the best care for her husbands gravesite? to have it left unmowed and a 'personal' note??? what ever happened to rest in PEACE? this is so sad...
mr. ferland should be fired for doing what he did and the association should not be standing by him and supporting him for his actions...

Okay this poor woman wants better for her husband than has been given in the past. There is nothing wrong with requesting better care of the grounds that were already paid for.
Dear Sir, how dare you leave such a horrid message for someone of her age and frailty. You said it in your message. May you answer to god for what you have done. In the mean time. Step up your work and provide the appropriate care needed on the grounds.

All you nay-sayers out there have NO IDEA what you're talking about. Maple Grove is a very beautiful and peaceful cemetery and it's because of the hard work the association has put into it. I was recently told by a family member that not even 15 years ago, there wasn't even ANY grass to mow and it was impossible to even go in after the snow had melted away in the spring, as there were 4 inch ruts in the drivable paths. People seem to forget that it was the association that fixed the damaged part of fence that a tree fell on. I know that it's PART of their job, but if they didn't care about the cemetery, as many of you seem to think, they WOULDN'T have fixed it at all. Some people complain that the grass is too tall and not being mowed enough, other people complain that the grass is being cut way too short. Also, I'm under the impression that the cemetery's funds are interest-only, and the interest rate is very low right now, so they can only do so much. And if the petition is old news, as some of you have apparently said, then why is it being mentioned in the articles?
As for perpetual care, those who don’t know what it is, it’s not hard to google it and get the definition, not assume stuff. According to the Maine Revised Statutes on the Maine Legislation website, perpetual care is described as, “A person, corporation or any other private entity that controls a cemetery shall establish a cemetery perpetual care fund. This fund is separate from any permanent care and improvement fund for a community mausoleum on a cemetery's premises established under section 1348. The income from the cemetery perpetual care fund must be devoted to maintenance of the cemetery. This cemetery perpetual care fund must be created by depositing in the fund at least 30% of the proceeds received, in full and in installments, from the sale of lots and plots in the cemetery. This section does not apply to a family burying ground as described in section 1142. The sale of a cemetery lot or plot that is subject to a contract for the perpetual care of the lot or plot or for general cemetery maintenance is exempt from this section, as long as the contract requires that at least 30% of the proceeds from the sale of the lot or plot be set aside with the income from those funds to be used for cemetery maintenance.”
On another issue that I read in the comments from the article the other day...I have been told that the books of lot owners and who is buried where are VERY organized. People from out of state or not from the area always give rave reviews on the books and how easy it ends up being to find where their loved ones are buried. I believe there are close to 5000 people buried in Maple Grove, and there has yet to be a complaint to the association about the organization and use/helpfulness of the books...
Obviously, they can't please everyone, and the association means well, but the issue shouldn't have made the paper anyway, and now possibly the local TV news stations, that's just causing even more trouble that no one wanted to deal with and this has gotten completely out of hand. Grow up people, there are more pressing things in the world than some supposed unfitting care in a cemetery that has been well-improved over the last 10+ years. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I was always taught that if you have an issue with someone and want to fix it, talk to that person face-to-face. Phone calls/emails/getting the media involved won’t get anybody anywhere.

Does a planter in the middle of a grave site count as face to face, or are you agreeing that this was wrong?
Was the first story not really news worthy? Yeah, very back page stuff.
Is this story newsworthy? Yes.
Maybe if Mr. Ferland handled this by, I dunno, to quote, "talk to that person face-to-face" instead of how he did, we wouldn't be here right now.
The story isn't the upkeep. People aren't riled up by the upkeep.
They are pissed that Mr. Ferland would chose such a unprofessional and insensative response.

I'm not talking about David, I'm talking about Mrs. Manchester and all the other people who suddenly have issues with Maple Grove...the thing with David is a sudden side story, it's something that came up over the weekend after the first story was published on Friday. The real topic at hand is the simple fact that people don't want to abide by the rules that have clearly been posted, and instead of being mature and going to talk to those that actually can do something, they turn to the media, who just blows things totally out of proportion, and choose sides. People say the have tried talking to people and nothing gets done? Guess what, there are more than just a couple people on the board! How about inquiring and find out who else is on the board, then something might finally be done.
Oh and EVERYONE has a right to free speech, we're all covered under the 1st Amendment, we're all entitled to our opinions, no matter if people think a comment is right or wrong. And I don't consider it vandalism if he found the broken pot in the trash then wrote on it. And it's not considered trashing her lot if he placed a note on there. He probably didn't have any paper in his truck, and paper would have blown away. David just wanted to get his point across. He didn't threaten Mrs. Manchester, he wrote it out of anger, which he has every right to be. Did he think the note would put a whole other twist on this ridiculous story? I'm going with no.
I do agree with a poster above though...there are more important things that should be making headline news, (FYI, those soldiers who were killed, who were fighting for OUR freedom) and the SJ is settling for some kind of petty annoyance to make the front page? Give up and move on. I know I am.

Delude yourself however you want, but this isn’t about a lady upset about her husbands grave only getting mowed 3 times.
This is about a lack of respect and decorum shown to someone’s grave. It’s not a place to leave messages, litter, or make a point. As I posted earlier, it took me all of a minute to track her down. He could have handled this respectfully, in person, but he didn’t.

Walter Manchester should lose his job! To write a threatening message to someone that visits the cemetary every day, she of all people would know if he has been doing his job or not. I don't blame her for being afraid to go to the cemetary. If she was my mother I would not let her go alone.

This is absolutely ridiculous. The entire thing. A cemetery is no place for such arguement and disrespect. We have loved ones buried here - and we would have spoken up just the same if we felt they weren't being taken care of. A letter and petition are sublte docs requesting a change. The response back was horrific and unwarranted even if you disagree with what she's asking. I think its a beautiful cemetery... and i do disagree that the care is overlooked. This woman just wants her husband to have the best so who can fault her for that? Mow that plot, clean that stone. No matter what - Respect that persons resting place. - what if it were you're wife/husband/mom/dad/son/daughter? If ours were ever disrespected in this way you would face an army on that plot. guaranteed.

after reading all the posts and controversey i think there are hurt feelings on both sides of this issue . i am sure mr ferland will continue to take good care of the cemetary for all who visit there . i sometimes walk there and have on occasion sat quietly enjoying the serenity. can the sun journal stop this nonsense reporting and get onto the bigger issues of the day!!!!!!!
an article like this shoud never have recieved the attention you have given it. sooooo lets move on, can we all visit a grave on memorial day veterans day? can we take the time to visit our loved ones grave, can we bend over and pull a weed or dust off a stone next to our loved ones that we can tell will most likley not be tended because of the age of the stone ? we can let this issue lie and concentrate on what we can do for others isnt this wjwd...isnt this the christian way? David i hope you keep up the good work and remember deeds will get you there. Mrs manchester if you need any help perhaps you should ask and i im sure someone will help you keep up the grave site to YOUR satisfaction. both of you need to let this go there are more important works to be done..GOD BLESS have a new day.

Ya I know everyones going to say "oh you know David, of course youll be on his side!" but before everyone gets all upset I gotta say, the letter probably wasnt worded right, but I understand where its coming from. Hes proud of what he does for work and did take it personal, as for her being scared I can say...dont be, David would NEVER hurt you! hes not like that, and i think a lot of this is turning into unecessary drama. Yes he can be stubborn but I think all of this is a matter of miscommunication and hurt feelings on both sides. She should have made an attempt to contact him not to go to the papers and i hear what ppl are saying, that she contacted the board blah blah, but did she ever ask who mowed the cemetary? did she try and contact him? is there more to this story? David has always taken good care of everyplace he works, hes great with people, yes this is an unfortunate mishap, but most ppl enjoy working with david, hes good with work and hes talented. Further more he gets more compliments than complaints and i think that says a lot. But of course most ppl will take her side, she innocent elderly lady who is just minding her own business and deserves to be treated like royalty while david is a bum, (Which he deffinitely is not!) anyone who personally knows him will tell you that he has worked 48 hours straight at times and can keep going, he doesnt slow down, he barely even makes it home for dinner. So before passing judgement on both parties, people should think more into things, whats going in each ones personal life??? do you have a clue? nah bet you dont. Is she home just stewing over her husbands grave while hes working on how horrible he can make her life...not at all. this is turning into a much bigger deal than it should be and the paper is right where it wants to be, making money and causing more problems. Its just crazy.

If he works such long hours and barely make it home for dinner, then how vindictive does he have to be to take the time to carefully mow right to the edges of her husband's grave. It would be much faster to not slow down his mower just to advertise how childish and petty he really is.

He could be Santa for all the little orphans too, but it doesnt matter when you cross the line with a gravesite.. He might even mow it for free! But after his actions he does not belong there....If he had a problem with the widow then HE should have gone to the board and requested they (professionally/humanely) deal with her and correct her if she was wrong. But now it doesnt matter. She could have been 100% wrong to begin with, but he crossed the line and no matter what he will be wrong in the eyes of most....

He might be the nicest, hardest working guy out there. However, there is NO, I repeat, NO justification for making a point with someone's grave.
As I said earlier - he might have mowed the cemetery 300 times. Doesn't matter now. He loses because he chose a completely tasteless overreaction as his response. At my work, if someone has a problem with my output, I try to identify the issues and solve them, or argue for how I was doing it. Additionally, this isn't someone detailing a car. Anyone with half a brain knows there is a certain decorum when it comes to cemeteries. You certainly don't use a grave site to make a point.

1. The intent of the message wasn't to correct or seek to resolve the issue. It seemed purely to incite. "You said bad thing about me, so I'm not going to do my job"
2. Writing it on a broken planter makes the grave site that he is charged with caring for look worse. His job is to imporve and care for the site, not make it worse.
3. IT'S A &$@#!!!1! GRAVE. Watch this(I know you can't) . Taking all of ONE MINUTE, I typed "Brenda Manchester MECHANIC FALLS , maine" into google, and got her address and phone number.

Blah blah Blah! yay good for you ,you lost some weight. Get your kudos from someone who cares..... Posting your sputum 3 or 4 times in a row is annoying.. The one thing that could have made this all a non issue can be summed up into one word... PROFESSIONALISM!!! that says it all... I dont care what industry you are in, if you dont handle yourself professionally then you will not last as long as your professional competitor... If this man is a contractor with the cemetary then he needs to be replaced, if for nothing more to save face for the cemetary administration. (or whatever they call themselves). As far as sticking up for yourself goes, what aboutthe right of this widow to stick up for herself with regards to the upkeep of her late husbands plot.. She knows best what her late husbands wishes were when he purchased this plot, and if the groundskeeper wasnt keeping up his end of the deal then she is completely justified for STICKING UP FOR HERSELF..
If he wanted to stick up for himself he should have done it in a professional manner.. Then he wouldnt have this problem. If you were at your job and a customer had a complaint(justified grievance) about your performance and your solution was to tell the customer (in a unprofessional manner) that they will no longer get service from you, would you really expect to have a job left?
The difference between a professional and a nonprofessional is, a professional will never stoop down to the level of a disgruntled customer.
A professional will rise above the problem, correct a problem if one is present and move on. Anyone with a "Its personal" and a get even attitude in a service industry is just weeks from the unemployment line.. Good luck Mr.Ferland.. Your gonna need it... Hopefully (for your sake)the grandkids dont make it personal too...

I walk the cemetary once a week for exersize, ive always been safe and the cemetary has been well kept since Mr. Ferland has started taking care of it. Would you rather have the grass all burnt in the cemetary from mowing too much or lush and green? also, ive been in the cemetary walking an occasion last summer when Mr. Ferland was pressure washing the stones. The cemetary has never looked better! I think theres a lot of trouble making going on from people that are just bored and like to cause drama, and its too bad because now it affecting both parties. So Mr. Ferland decides to stand up for himself and thats not okay? I dont think anyone going to cause any harm but standing up for yourself is okay in my book! at least mr. ferland is working for a living not living off of your tax dollars! I see this over and over again, the hard workers are always the ones who get bashed, they never get a break! looks like shes going to have actually get up, get dressed and take care of her husbands grave now, she wanted to start something, well now she has to deal with it. I would also take it personal if I were him, if you feel proud of your work and you know you have been doing a good job and one or two ppl bash your work, who wouldnt take that personal? I went from 200 lbs to 105 in one year through eating healthy and exercising and let me tell you...everyone said i was anarexic and i deffinitely wasnt! I took pride in how much work I did to lose the weight and how great I looked so when people made up stories about how I lost weight I took it very personal...can you blame him? seriously. People need to get their facts straight before accusing someone for not doing there job.

She did not write the note herself. She and her granddaughter found it Sunday afternoon. The police were called. I guess you feel it's okay for someone to leave a note of this nature on someone's grave. I can assure you this was not done for attention. As I said before if the Association had been a little more cooperative with her concerns this would never had been in the paper.

Ferland is a loser and should lose his job! If this is how he reacts because the woman complained about the care of the cemetary, the man has some serious issues!! What makes her a "difficult woman" because she complained? I have seen how so many cemetaries are cared for and it's an insult to the resting souls that lie in them! Lawns are unkept, trash is lying throughout as well as dead branches. Families are paying for the upkeep of their loved ones graves! How do any of you know that Ferland is doing his job as perfectly as he claims? If he acts so childish because someone is complaining, I wouldn't expect his work to be very professional either. What he did to her husbands grave is against the law!! He took trash and left it on his stone, with a childish nasty note!! The police could have done something and so should his employers! This alleged letter is no longer the issue! Ferland is a childish moron!

I cannot believe the treatment that Mrs. Manchester received. I work with the public everyday teens, adults, elderly people. They can all be hard to deal with, but I think that David needs a course in customer service. She is a customer she did pay for that plot to be maintained by the cemetery. If he does own his own business and is hired by the cemetery, I think he may see a decline in his business. Some people take advantage of the elderly and we all know that it occurs. The cemtery should not have allowed him to place the note. Mr . Ferland needs to grow up an act like an adult. I hope that someday this type of disrespect does not occur to him at a loved ones grave. I'm sure that he would complain about also. Shame on you David!!!!

This man should be ashamed of himself. This is NOT the way to treat someones grave, regardless of the disagreement with the widow.. This man needs to be fired.. The grave is owned by the occupant and thier family.. It is sacred ground and should be respected no matter what. He has showed us all that he is not fit and lacks the neccessary level of respect to perform the job as grounds keeper for any cemetary..
Why is he not being charged with vandalism.. Whose property was the flower box? Did the widow place the flower box there? Would anyone else who strolled through the cemetary and kicked over a flower box and scribe some sort of message on it be charged with vandalism? Or someone with an axe to grind with the family?I think they would... This mans lack of respect and professionalism is a disgrace.. He should walk away with his head hanging low... A public apology is deserved here.

And ANY type of representation and or authority figures that condone the type of disrespect this man has shown is clearly NOT very professional. I can understand why he might be a little frustrated if he mows "9" times a year as apposed to the 3 he has been accused of . But , to carry on this way with a note and purposely avoiding the care of one particular persons GRAVE. Please! I would think mowing would be done at least once every three weeks , if not every two.

I do know for a fact that the Association's president had been contacted by Mrs. Manchester about the condition of the cemetery more than once. The last time she contacted him, he couldn't be bothered to respond. I know that Mr. Ferland can mow only when he is called to do so. Mrs. Manchester did not have a problem with the job he was doing until he wrote that note. What people don't seem to understand is that it is perpetual care. That means that the cemetery is to be mowed and stones cleaned and repaired when necessary. That is what people paid for. Some members of the association seem to think that they own the cemetery, they DO NOT! They've had rules for years and have never enforced them until they found a bird poop on (I'm presuming) one of their stones. So then they decide to start enforcing some of the rules. When I say some I mean that it says on the sign to the cemetery that owners will be contacted and given 72 hours to remove whatever has been deemed inappropriate. The Association has not contacted owners and has just picked and chosed items to remove. If the Association has been more cooperative and actually listened to the concerns this may never had hit the newspaper.

Where did these people grow up? What kind of people raised them to think this was acceptable behavior? I shudder to think of it.
When you think it's OK to do something like writing a nasty note on a planter and leaving it on a grave as retribution for some perceived slight, there's something really wrong with your mind.

Don't reckon you're going to get Charm School Graduates as caretakers at these little cemeteries, and with volunteer, rather than full-time management - oversight isn't exactly what it might be at Forest Lawn Cemetary in L.A.
Bad enough the folks involved are blowing it up out of proportion - now we have people here calling it 'Grave Desecration' when it doesn't even begin to fit the legal elements under Maine Revised Statutes §507-A. Interference with cemetery or burial ground
And don't kid yourself about "Little Old Ladies" - they're not nearly as helpless as they appear. Ask waitresses, medical professionals, and anyone who serves the public. They do know what they're doing, they know how to get what they want, and they do know how to elicit sympathy.
Dave Ferland could certainly have handled this in a much better manner, but with fifteen cemeteries to mow, he probably doesn't have the time on his hands that Mrs. Manchester does. He also signed his note - something many of those who post here see no need to do. There's no need for Mrs. Manchester to be frightened of him - if anything were to happen to her, he would be the prime suspect. She's milking it at this point.

If you act in a professional manner, you can blow her off without making it worse. So you got a little old lady complaining. David Ferland even said "There's always one". But by reacting the way he did, he loses. Now the cemetery will be under pressure to fire him, and hen he tries to get new business, this will come up in any google seach of his name.
Nope, he made this personal, and overreacted. The only hope he has is to bend over backwards to make this lady happy.

This was something for the Board of Directors to handle; certainly not someone contracted to mow and clean the Cemetery.
Mrs. Manchester should have complained directly to someone on the board - and the Board should have dealt with the matter - and not given the contractor permission to write a note.
So by firing the contractor, the Board has to trouble itself with obtaining the services of another vendor, and Mr. Ferland still has fifteen cemeteries to mow. BFD.
I seriously doubt it's in the contractor's job description - implied or otherwise - to placate every visitor to the cemetery.

I don't think Ferland should lose his job over one difficult "customer". That is a far greater evil in this economy to take someone's job. BUT someone should intercede regarding this matter and help to resolve it so that both parties are satisfied. That should have been done a long time ago. Everyone who works with the public, knows how difficult some people can be and Ferland has a right to be upset. Sure, his actions are over the top but I don't think they gave us the whole story here.
Hopefully someone can intercede and help resolve this situation peacefully.

First off- Drop the political spin. This isn't politics, and trying to make this about politics is just stupid.
Secondly, David Ferland just lost this argument. It doesn't matter if he mowed it 10 times or 300 times. The correct way to respond to this would have been a note saying "Madam, I mowed this plot on these dates: ..... I do however, want to correct any deficiencies in the maintenance of your loved ones final resting place, so here is my business number, please feel free to call."
This response is insensitive and unprofessional. He says "this is personal". No, it's business. She paid for a plot in the cemetery. The cemetery pays you for upkeep. She is your customer.

Just an observation, but when she voiced her concern she may have believed her facts were correct. The only information I've got on this issue is what I've read here over the last few days... It would seem that, to her, it only looked like things had been mowed three times. If this is not the case, there are better ways to reassure someone that things are actually being taken care of than leaving a crudely fashioned note. (Was it written in black crayon on a lunch sack? How odd...)
I think, if it were me, I might also be a little upset... Step back a moment here and think this through: You think the place needs to be mowed. You point it out to the proper authorities. Nothing happens. You collect signatures of other folks who have also noticed that the place needs to be mowed. Nothing happens. There's a write-up in the paper ABOUT how "nothing happens." ...and like magic... the cemetery is mowed... EXCEPT for the plot where your loved ones are buried... AND you get a rude note telling you "It's personal." Hmmm... Yeah... Coincidence, I'm sure.

Childish and unprofessional. He should be fired and the cemetery board member who gave him permission to write the note should be canned as well. What a bunch of arrogant s***heads. Mrs. Manchester is a customer and is being treated like crap by a bunch lower echelon jerks.

Obviously David Ferland has some anger management issues. No wonder he works in a cemetary and not the public.

he works with the public quite a bit actually, and almost everyone he works with likes him and is impressed by his work.

I don't think Ferland should lose his job over one difficult "customer".

I suggest she take some grass clippers with her on one trip. Another trip take a bucket and a brush to clean the stone. If she's there every day and does the work herself, it will be just to her liking.
