LEWISTON — Reigning Tour de France champion Alberto Contador won't be participating in this weekend's Dempsey Challenge after all.

Due to a personal matter, the professional cyclist will not be able to travel to the United States and participate, said Mark Turcotte, a spokesman for the Dempsey Challenge on Tuesday morning.
"He apologizes to his fans and all involved with the Dempsey Challenge and wishes everyone an enjoyable weekend," Turcotte said, reading from an official statement.
Contador, the Tour de France winner in 2007, 2009 and 2010, was scheduled to join pro cyclists and Tour de France veterans Levi Leipheimer, Chris Horner and Kevin Livingston in the charity bicycle ride.
The bicycling events are scheduled for Sunday. They will begin and end at Simard-Payne Memorial Park in Lewiston.
