Auburn hunter shot

An Auburn man was injured Friday morning when he was struck by birdshot while hunting in eastern Maine.

Scott Dumont, 40, of Auburn, was struck by birdshot fired by Stephen R. Cote, 43, of Auburn, according to the Maine Warden Service. Dumont was hit in both legs. His injuries were not life-threatening, the Warden Service said.

Dumont, Cote and another hunter were grouse hunting and scouting moose for next week’s moose hunt off Number Nine Lake Road in a township in Washington County near the Aroostook County line. When the men saw a grouse that had gone into the woods off a dirt logging road, Dumont and Cote spread out and followed it. According to statements given to wardens, the grouse flushed between the hunters and Cote fired one time with his 12-gauge shotgun, hitting Dumont.

Dumont drove himself to The Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle, where he was treated and released.

The Warden Serice said the incident is under investigation.

Proof once again that we need

Proof once again that we need to question the wisdom of allowing anyone with a pulse to own and fire a gun.
