AUBURN — A few eyebrows were raised Wednesday night when Auburn School Committee members heard that students use Facebook on school laptops during school hours and that Facebook is used by some students to bully others.
Student representatives were giving reports about what's going on in schools. One said a bullying expert recently talked to students and the talk was useful.
Committee member Bonnie Hayes asked if there's bullying at Edward Little High School. Students said not in the high school, but on laptops.
There are nasty writings on bathroom stalls that never seem to go away, but there's not much bullying in school, said student Frankie Lally.
But, there's a lot that goes on with school laptops issued to students, she said. “You'll always find a fight on Facebook, every day.”
On Monday, the school began to block students from entering Facebook during the school day. Once logged onto Facebook, it's easy to waste time, even hours, Lally said. “It's a complete waste of time. We don't use our time wisely.”
School Committee members, including Lane Feldman, seemed surprised to hear that students use school laptops during school to go to Facebook. “Can we fix that?” Feldman asked, looking at Superintendent Tom Morrill.
Morrill said there are many ways to use Facebook, including ways that benefit learning. But it can also be abused, he said.
School officials have blocked Facebook use during school hours, Morrill said, but students find ways to get around the blocks as soon as they're put up. Facebook in schools will be explored in greater detail, Morrill said, adding that he would schedule a discussion between the School Committee and the school department's technology expert at a future meeting.

Are you kidding me?
Bullying does not happen at Edward Little only on Facebook?..What a joke...Bullying happens all the time there..in the bathrooms...on the "Snake Trail"....places where students KNOW there are no cameras....Try talking to a principal or guidance counselor there and they act so surprised when you tell them FIRST HAND about the bullying that goes on there...How about a young girl walking down the hall and having marijuana shoved in her face?....How about the FIGHT CLUB that happens in the bathrooms?...These kids are running that school not the administrators....Back in the day it was Lewiston High that had all these problems...What did they do?...They didn't put up with it...they took there school back by not putting up with it...they stopped shoving things under the rug there...the students were expelled not suspended....the students weren't given another chance....Edward Little has so many problems its not even funny anymore....And the students from Lewiston High that were expelled?....Guess where they go to school now?...EDWARD LITTLE....I'm sorry...but this school has more problems than people know...Students are afraid to speak up...The school cop?...Waste of money...Don't believe me?...Go spend a day there...See it for yourself...Kids are on there laptops making VIDEOS of themselves with there friends...Not only does this school need a rebuilding on the outside...but the inside also...lets have a LOCK DOWN and bring in the drug sniffing dogs like they did last year at Kennebunk High...You can buy most any type of drug there on a daily basis....Talk to the coaches...They try to do something but are told.."My son/daughter is depressed and is on anti-depressments....NIMB=Not In My BackYard"....I could go on & on...but my blood pressure is going up just writing this...Unbelievable folks....I lost track...has Edward Little got there accredidation back as a High School?....To lose it or be on suspension for that...what does that tell you?...I hope the people reading this can either agree with me or agree to disagree with me...BUT until you have a student there that is just a plain ole Jane...Don't tell me that what I have written here is not true..Because it is.....

... is when someone claims that children are no longer allowed to work out "disputes" for themselves. In reality, children, including teens, have NEVER been able to reason with or defend against bullies. Adult supervision and intervention have always been warranted, and I'm glad this generation of parents are beginning to realize it.

Well the problem is when the adults (teachers) intervene with positive reinforcement. They are not nearly stern enough with students nowadays, and the kids are basically laughing it off. That is why I tell my kids, if you get bullied, you tell the teacher. If it happens again, you tell the teacher. If it happens a third time, you punch the little punk right in the mouth as hard as you can. He will quickly learn whom the easy victim isn’t.

Lets see if I have this right...you make a comment against a LePage supporter and criticize their ONE spelling error in the post, but in your response you make one spelling error, one gramatically error and one societal issue in addressing someone incorrectly - and your reaction is simply to move to a different subject and attack me? Man thats deep reasoning right there, do you feel better after posting such drivel? Can you not stick to the subject at hand when you post? Do you clearly have no life other than posting on blogs and acting like you're superior to everyone because we have to work to support your alternative lifestyle? Get a clue, we're laughing at you and the times they are a changing!

somehow i knew the resident bully would rear his head....from what I've read here since joining you bully and insult pretty much anyone who is not of your "persuasion" and whats worse is the newspaper for allowing you to be a bully. Somehow I'd be willing to wager a weeks earnings (whoops that excludes you) that you would NEVER show up at a public gathering of LSJ bloggers and admit your true identity to them in the face....you couldn't handle the rejection and laughter....

a LSJ blogger convention. Can you imagine the number of police that would need to be on stand by? Ambulances and LifeFlight would have to stage outside. But of course the SJ would have some news to cover.

use Apple Remote Desktop. All the other school systems use it. Every now and then the network admin checks up on what the kids are doing. Locks their machine up if it's not appropriate. Once the kids know that the admin is checking in they stop doing stupid things pretty fast. And for those of you that say this is an invasion of privacy well these machines are property of the State of Maine.

yeah, the administrators actually do that, there may not have blocks on everything but students arent set to roam free either, the administrators check up on people fairly often and quite a few people get caught.

I agree with you on the fact that privacy is a non issue these laptops belong to the state, these kids are using them. Aside from that, the parents have the right to check and see what their kids are doing on those laptops or any computer they use or phone they use to see what they are doing. I know that there are parents who are diligent about checking on their kids and what they are doing and there are parents who do not give a damn and do not check. Fact is you are going to have your kids who like to bully others and it is going to happen whether they use technology or not, but it would be reduced greatly if there was more supervision involved.

Am I the only one who is sick of hearing about this "bullying" crap? It's nothing new, its just the latest trendy cause to get behind so people can feel important. If a kid on FB is getting “bullied” by another, they can easily block that person.

There is another way of looking at this. By not blocking these social sites it overrides the parents choice of whether or not a child can go on the site and create an account. Having a school laptop should be used for school purposes not social websites where kids can bully other kids and they waste their time on it when they should be doing school work. I do realize that not all families can afford a computer or maybe even internet access and some kids go without but there are other options for that. Whats up with webcams on these laptops and kids using skype? I think it gives more oppurtunity for trouble. Kids do not need a webcam on their laptops from school. BLOCK this stuff....

As if FACEBOOK is allowed to be used at school. Lewiston has EVERYTHING blocked and it is a pain but come on Auburn, you are just making it easy for bullies and predators have access to our kids.

I don't see how facebook can be used as a learning tool in school...I have a facebook page and it is a way to keep in touch with people, however there is nothing much other than games ...there should be more than a block put on the computers..not hard to check up on these students. Maybe the teachers should check the computers once in awhile by walking around the classroom and randomly taking a childs computer and checking the browsing history...and log on to facebook themselves to see if the students are on that are in the classrooms..alot of these kids probably wouldn't think of going offline so they don't show like they are on FB...take the computer away if the abuse continues..no need for bullying
