National rankings hurting our pride and our economy

It's another dispiriting black mark for a state that can ill afford any more: Maine is, according to one respected business magazine, the worst state in the U.S. to start a business or build a career.

We finished dead last in the most recent edition of Forbes magazine's state rankings, nudging out Rhode Island and moving from 49th to 50th.

"Growth prospects in Maine have deteriorated relative to the rest of the country," according to the article accompanying the Forbes listings.

"Job growth is expected to increase 1.3 percent annually over the next five years — one of the worst forecasts in the country. The state has endured a rash of business closings the past three years as well."

The ranking puts us behind other beleaguered locales, including Mississippi (48), Michigan (47), Louisiana (44) and West Virginia (41).

Also accompanying us at the bottom of the charts are a few surprises: Hawaii (46), Vermont (45) and Sarah Palin's home state, Alaska (42).

Other New England neighbors, Massachusetts and New Hampshire, fared better, 16th and 19th respectively.

The best places to do business: Utah, Virginia, North Carolina, Colorado and Washington, in that order.

The article spends some time lauding Utah for its pro-business climate. Its economy is expanding at a 3.5 percent rate, twice the national average and three times our rate.

Household incomes surged 5 percent in Utah last year, the best rate in the U.S. and twice the national average.

Utah lowered its corporate tax rate from 7 percent to 5 percent in 2008, something Maine tried to do but which was rejected by voters.

The state has energy costs 35 percent below the national average, far lower than those in Maine, and it has an educated labor force, low poverty rate, healthy people and "ample" recreational opportunities.

Earlier this year, Forbes also "crowned" Utah the "country's most fiscally fit state government." Maine state government ranked 32nd.

The article highlights how major companies are expanding in Utah: Goldman Sachs, Adobe, Oracle and eBay — all bringing thousands of high-tech knowledge jobs to the state.

The Forbes rankings measure six "vital" categories for business: costs, labor supply, regulatory environment, current economic climate, growth prospects and quality of life.

Business costs — labor, energy and taxes — are weighted most heavily.

Maine was ranked 16th in "quality of life," by far our highest ranking. We were 47th in business costs and 48th in regulatory environment, 45th and 44th in economic climate and growth prospects.

It would be easy to dismiss the Forbes rankings if they didn't mirror a host of other studies that cast the state's business climate in a miserable light.

Collectively, they are a public-relations and business-recruitment disaster for Maine.

Nearly all of the candidates for governor talk about improving our business climate.

The next governor should act on that by appointing a blue-ribbon panel of experts to study what concrete steps Maine can take to emulate the states at the top of these rankings.

Lower our corporate income tax rate? Streamline and speed up our regulatory environment? Provide incentives for more highly educated, technically oriented students to stay in the state?

Whatever it is, we need a plan. These rankings will become a self-fulfilling prophecy if allowed to continue.

He shortened a Latin motto.

It is "in vino veritas" and it means that when you drink alcohol you tend to get loose and sometimes say things you normally wouldn't say had you not imbibed. He lives up to his chosen name. Make that "down to".

in roman mythology veritas is the goddess of truth - a daughter of saturn and the mother of virtue. her image is shown as a young virgin dressed in white. it is believed she hid in the bottom of a holy well because she was elusive.

Queenbee, take off those rose colored glasses

If you did then you might see the rest of us as humans and not expect so much out of us. Yes, there are all kinds of personalities with a thousand different views here on SJ, and I am sorry we don't live up to you high standards. Your politically correct views and your self proclaimed title of "Queen of Compassion" are not indicative of the real world. They are your fantasy.

The superiority of your "compassion" and "goodness" and "touchy-feely" correctness is beyond most of us. Yes, we have war/recession/recovery to worry about, and it makes us angry. It sure as heck doesn't make us want to have a group hug with you and sing "Kumbaya".

freyt's picture

Beantown

LOL. Don't remember that particular bar. Most of my time in Boston was a drunken blur. Did go to combat zone a couple of times. Most weekends i was back here partying. Went back either drunk or hungover, and sometimes late. Resulting in base restrictions and a couple of short visits to the brig in the Fargo building. Still find it hard to believe i recieved an honorable discharge. Lost all interest and respect for the navy when i was in Va. and the government decided to desegragate the military. There was a certain element that i will not live with or eat with. Do remember the USS Boston. She was also a sister ship to the USS Quincy CA71 that my father served in during WWII. CA69 back then and had a proud history of service.

Maine has been in the bottom

Maine has been in the bottom 10 on that list for years and never complained before. Was the 49th slot not worthy of defense? We've had PLENTY of warning! It was only a matter of time before we were handed the 50th slot! How about if those "experts" in Augusta drive around and speak with the people of Maine for some input on this report?? I consider myself somewhat "successful" but even I am taking heat from out of state corporate (New Jersey) for not being "successful enough". I see the numbers in my business and if I rated my opportunities on a curve, I come in last too! We have the uncanny ability to weather the storm, but we just never hit the highs we could if we simply allowed ourselves to do so. Maine does NOT need another Democrat in the Blaine house!

You got an anchor tied to your Butt???

I hear one can earn a nice, safe pension in Afghanistan - or buy a house for $5,000 in Detroit.....

So I made some decisions in my life where I worked really long, shidty hours for not the best of money, wasn't with my family on Holidays, etc - picked up the pieces of other folks' lives as they went screaming off into the oblivion of stupidity, and suffered the madness of a society which kept doing the same damn things over and over again - while expecting different results.

Yes - and I came out of the other end of the maze with my pensions; and a little business I cooked up. Also with a healthy regard and respect for many of the 'Little People' whom I worked for when I was in law enforcement that twenty years - for cops are the only social service agency that make twenty-four hour house calls when people are at their worst and really hurting. That experience is what turned me from a start-raving mad Conservative into a compassionate Liberal.

I care about the "Everybody Else" that you conservatives are just ready to fook as soon as you get your Band of Brigands into office there, DidDat.......

You're the one who brought up whether or not I paid taxes before, so it's you who broached the subject. So you didn't serve your country - and probably won't serve your state. No wonder it's going to hell, eh. If you're a "Working Man" - and Vote Republican - it's obvious that you are voting against the best interests of your Family.
