Western Maine needs the jobs a casino can create

For a decade, gambling opponents have used various arguments to talk Mainers out of a casino.

And, with each passing year, the arguments have rung more and more hollow.

Gambling is no way to build an economy, they have said.

Well, try telling that to the Bangor City Council, which has reaped millions of dollars from Hollywood Slots and which opposes allowing Western Maine the same opportunity.

The Bangor council will use its share of the revenue, about $2 million per year, to build a new civic center across the street from the racino. If that's not economic development, we don't know what is.

Or, try telling the Bangor Chamber of Commerce, which has seen Hollywood Slots create 350 jobs, build a 152-room hotel, attract about a million visitors per year and generate some $65 million in revenue.

Yet they, too, oppose allowing that same sort of opportunity in southern and Western Maine.

For years, opponents claimed a casino would create crime and produce more problem gamblers.

But the evidence is nonexistent. Bangor's police chief told the Maine Sunday Telegram that the crimes associated with the Bangor racino are relatively insignificant.

A fund, meanwhile, designed to help problem gamblers remains untapped.

Critics have argued that a casino would hurt Maine's wholesome "brand."

Yet, last year, Maine's tourist industry had an excellent year.

The only thing that hasn't panned out at Hollywood Slots is the pretext that accompanied its approval by voters — that it would save Maine's harness-racing industry.

Despite bigger purses, the value of bets placed at Bangor Raceway has declined nearly 40 percent since 2006, according to the Telegram story.

The proponents of a casino in Oxford County have been more straightforward about their intentions: They are all Maine businesspeople trying to create jobs and economic activity in an area that has a 10 percent unemployment rate.

This is the first time the Sun Journal has endorsed a casino issue, for two reasons.

First, the time is right and other solutions have simply not worked. A host of businesses in Western Maine have closed and few have opened to take their place. The region needs this casino to help boost its growing tourist economy.

This casino could create 1,700 direct jobs and, perhaps, another 1,000 spinoff positions.

Second, we have faith in the group of local investors behind this project, all successful Maine businesspeople who are committed to controlling this casino.

The profits in Bangor go to Penn National, an out-of-state gaming conglomerate. The money generated by the Oxford casino is more likely to be plowed back into Maine's economy.

The people behind the Lewiston casino proposal are all well-intentioned. But we do not see that group having the credibility or capital to pull off a casino in downtown Lewiston.

Bluntly, a casino will be built at some point in Maine, as gaming gains greater and greater acceptance.

Either Western Maine will get in on the ground floor, or it will not.

Either the jobs will be here, where they are needed, or in some town south of here or on the coast.

We urge Lewiston-Auburn voters, and those across Western Maine, to seize this opportunity. It may not come again.

Vote "yes" on Question 1.

I'm voting yes. A casino will

I'm voting yes. A casino will not really change downtown Lewiston much. It's a shithole now, it'll still be a shithole later if/when a casino is built.

When the subject is drugs,

When the subject is drugs, the argument in favor of legalizing is that doing so would cut out the criminal elements. But then, Augusta would do what it does best: tax and regulate. And as with cigarettes and booze, they would overdo it - inviting cutthroat competition from the bentnoses. The only downside to legalizing gambling is the state's history with similar things.

Organized crime uses casino

Organized crime uses casino operations for money laundering and to promote prostitution. I'm sure Oxford County will be up for these additional job opportunities.

Organized crime in Oxford

Organized crime in Oxford County? You're joking, right?
This is a place where at the Oxford Fair they sell block tickets on where a bull or a cow will drop its next load. I believe your fears of a casino in Oxford County being an incubator for organized crime are misplaced.

Heard a radio commercial

today from the Lewiston group asking voters to vote no on 1 and save thier vote to next year. Someone should advise mendros and company that anti oxford campaign is going to backfire this year and may even come back to haunt him next year when he is looking for support. As they say what comes around goes around.

I think the Lewiston proposal

I think the Lewiston proposal is dead in the water. Had they picked anyone but (Clearly-Not-Starving) Starvos Mendros as their 'spokesperson' they may have had a chance. He always seems to be around looking for a free-be at someone else's expense be it a government handout or a signature on a petition.

Disbarred lawyer, Seth Carey

Disbarred lawyer, Seth Carey found a developer to invest in a Casino in Rumford and you don't think Robinson, a millionaire patent attorney who spent 30 years in DC can find one? You really are a bunch of idiots. Or perhaps just liars.

eddie's picture

Mr carey

Reinstated Attorney Seth Carey had nothing to do with finding an investment group for the 2008 referendum. The obvious development problems with the Bates Mill building will prove to be to costly in the end and could prove to be the final undoing of the project.
Dont buy into the scare tactics being presented by the lewiston group. Oxford will create jobs now. Vote yes on 1 today. Next year vote for lewiston if you want. vote yes on 1

Wow, the sun-journal doesn't

Wow, the sun-journal doesn't think a Casino license in downtown Lewiston will attract developers to build it? No wonder your paper is on the verge of bankruptcy.

HYPOCRITS!

If anyone could read this and not see the 800 pound gorilla missing from the story, you should be ashmed....bottom line here is that a casino within 25 miles of lewiston Auburn would generate significant advertising revenue for this very newspaper and to NOT indicate that those potential revenues make a difference on their support is absolutely BALDERDASH! To write an EDITORIAL in support and not at least issue a disclaimer that they expect revenue stream is absolutely an insult to each and every reader of this newspaper....and is exactly why newspapers continue to lose readership throughout the country!

Not to mention a potential for an increase in subscriptions, especially if the hotel offers it’s guest a daily LSJ….

Bullocks. A Casino in Oxford

Bullocks.

A Casino in Oxford will draw hundreds, THOUSANDS of out-of-staters looking for work, who will likely take a large portion of the casino jobs as well as other low-paying jobs that will be created by the resort. The influx of new “Mainers” will put a HUGE strain on an already spread-to-thin welfare system. They will require subsidized housing, and will look to the surrounding cities (L/A) for a cheap place to live. This increase in population will cause a greater need for civic services and social services, and this mirage of a casino will not pick up the whole tab.

People think Lewiston is bad now? Vote “yes” and see what happens. You really think we can afford double-digit increase in crime rate?

Old Bill's picture

Really? What is your

Really? What is your justification for claiming that "out-of-staters...will likely take a large portion of the casino jobs..."? It seems to me that whoever builds the damned thing will be looking for local people to hire, not anyone from away.

eddie's picture

you cant be serious

When we have thousands of workers unemployed in our own area why would they want to hire out of state people...it does not make any business sense. Nor do you make any sense.

Do you have another industry that is going to put that amount of jobs here? The state runs the biggest gambling business in the state right now! Save your sermon for Sunday!

K0NPHL1C7's picture

How about Maine makes itself

How about Maine makes itself more appealing to new business by reducing the cost of dong business in Maine? Seems pretty simple.

candiceanne's picture

First step is to put out the welcome mat for real.

The first big cost of doing business in Maine is getting past the NO! Ask the Plum Creek people, the gas plant people, the casino people, the wind power people, and on and on and on. Taxes are bad no doubt however, long before you have to worry about taxes, you have to get in and getting in is expensive first you have to go through the governor, then all the state regulators then get dragged through years of litigation by the tree huggers only to find you have flushed all that money because it will end up a NO! Maine has to put out the welcome mat for real first.

Same old song

Why is it every time the word "casino" comes up, the word "crime" closely follows? These aren't the days of Bugsy Seagel in old time Las Vegas people. I think casinos get a bad rap from TV and film and this is clouding people's judgments. I'd like to know "specifically" what kind of crime people are talking about, honestly. Is it the type of crime that was on the streets of Lewiston a couple weeks ago that left 2 people dead? No casino in sight and crime still occurred.

K0NPHL1C7's picture

Why do people attribute

Why do people attribute casinos to crime you ask?

Here’s a decent little read for you. Maine isn’t the only state that has had to decide whether or not to allow casinos. Many other states have taken the gamble (Pun intended) and we should learn from their mistakes.

Hats off to the LSJ editorial board

The editorial board of the LSJ should be commended for thier support of the Oxford Casino Referendum. It was a bold move for all the right reasons, at the right time. Maine people cannot continue to wait. We are ranked 50th, last in America for creating business opportunites. The Oxford resort is not going to turn around the economy of Maine but it is a great first step of many steps in turning this ship in the right direction.

Finally much has been talked about whether the passage of the Oxford Resort will stop the Lewiston project from moving forward...IT DOES NOT!..The Lewiston referendum has language that exempts the Lewsiton project from any mileage restrictions from Oxford. So essentially you are free to vote for Oxford without any fear of stopping the Lewiston project.

Now Is The Right Time!!!

This editorial makes the case that has been clear to many as this election season approached: Now is the right time for a casino in Maine. The location, the timing, the plan, and the people behind it have all convinced me that this is a good opportunity for Oxford county, but also for the rest of us. I am glad to see the SJ join the chorus.

Mr Berry, I'd be interested to know

Perhaps Mr. Berry or anyone else with knowledge about this subject, could tell me if a casino in Andro or Oxford county would lighten the burden on the towns that pay taxes to the county. I think more people would support the casino efforts if say people in Greene knew that a casino in Lewiston could lower what surrounding towns in the same county pay to the county.

eddie's picture

Oxford does

The oxofrd referendum sends about 2 million a year to Oxford and about 1 million a year to the county. it also sends about 2.1 million a year to androscoggin county to be applied to every school system. So the green municpality will benifit as thier school system will revies funds...cant comment on lewiston but that vote is over a year away oxford is now
