PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Maine's SAT college entrance examination scores stayed relatively flat for the high school class of 2009, but were far below the national average.

It is so frustrating when

It is so frustrating when the media presents such absurd comparisons without any attempt at communicating the entire picture. To my knowledge, the State of Maine is the only state that requires ALL juniors to take the SAT. That means that the average MUST be lower than other states, where only a portion of the students take the test.

Imagine if every school needed to compute the average height of their students. School A measures every student height and averages it together, while school B decides to just measure the heights of the students on their basketball team. Which school would we expect to have the smaller average? Clearly the school that measures EVERY student.

In the same way, the average for Maine MUST be lower than the rest of the country, since we test ALL juniors. Thus, stating that the critical reading average for Maine is 468, while the national average is 501 is completely meaningless information.

Well the state should learn

Well the state should learn that BUILDING new schools is not going to make better students. HIRING better TEACHERS WILL!!!!
