Pay attention, class

John Dumont (June 27) has been "following the gay marriage issue for years" and asks questions of someone "much smarter than me." Having taught in Maine schools for many years, I am embarrassed at his questions.
Please pay attention, class. This is important and we've gone over this many times.
First, class, our elected officials voted for marriage equality because they are obliged to obey the Constitution, which protects the rights of all people, not just the majority or the popular. Perhaps Dumont missed that civics class. (Actually, the majority of Maine citizens spoke and voted in favor of equality for all Maine people.)
Second, Dumont is not correct — animals do not always pick mates of the opposite sex. Same-gender pairings occur throughout the animal kingdom, as any good biology teacher would point out.
Third, he asks why God made Adam and Eve. Again, biology: male and female procreate. Not all human beings want to do that, can do that, should be coerced to do that, or be denied civil rights if they don't. Love, not procreation, makes a family. That is a preschool lesson.
Now, class, why do you suppose Dumont came up with only one biblical example of God's plan for marriage? Wasn't David and Jonathan's covenent of "love more wonderful than that of a woman" also God's plan? Perhaps he forgot that example.
Children have to be taught to hate and fear, but, as adults, we can learn what we may have missed in school.
Lew Alessio, Greene

Mr Alessio seems quite

Mr Alessio seems quite confused.
When did marriage become a right?
Equal treatment under the law.
Marriage equality already existed.
Homosexuals or Heterosexuals could not marry someone of the same sex, equal treatment under the law.

"animals do not always pick mates of the opposite sex." Biologically the strongest drive is to procreate.
There will always be these anomalies or birth defects, some fatal or not, some visible and some not. Most not desirable from a biological point of view. Picking a mate of the opposite sex is definitely a defect that doesn't work to the benefit of a species. Is it good or bad? In nature no such judgment exists, and I don't believe one should exist in society either.

Marriage is between a man and a woman plain and simple.

If this law is not repealed we all know the next step for the Homosexual lobby will be to punish churches that refuse to perform homosexual marriages.

mad dad complains that the media and teachers are liberal??

Sorry to clue you in, Old Crustacean, but "Freedom of the Press" and 'Universal Education' were once radically liberal ideas - resisted tooth and nail by the conservative royalists, ecclesiasticals, land-owners, and early industrialists who feared that commoners might at one time become enlightened and revolt against the heavy fist of tyranny exerted by the ruling classes of Church, State, and Society.

It's history, pure and simple - and not understanding that is no one's fault but your own.

As Conservatism rests on the bedrock of tradition - remember that the traditions of the free press and universal education rest on liberalism.

As I've pointed out in the

As I've pointed out in the past Liberals lie, it's not their fault it's just what they do.

And todays Liberals are anything but liberal! Just as veritas is anything but "The Truth"

Now to dolositas's (veritas) post;
""Freedom of the Press" and 'Universal Education' were once radically liberal ideas""

Freedom of the press was so important to the CONSERVATIVE Founders of this country that they made it the
First Amendment to the Constitution.

Universal Education was an idea put forward by Marx.
Did we just witness dolositas (veritas) admit that modern day Liberals are really Marxists?
I believe so!

Well Mr. Alessio, you must

Well Mr. Alessio, you must not have paid attention either. You need to cite which amendment in the constitution that specifically states that an individual has a right to gay marriage. Now be careful, rights protected under the constitution are specifically stated in the constitution. Gay marriage let alone marriage is not even mentioned in the constitution and therefore not protected under the constitution, not unless you are willing to abuse the 9th and 14th amendments. Marriage is in tune with social and religious beliefs, that over the years has become a moral dilemma for most deeply religious people. The gay community along with the liberal progressive movement are attempting to manipulate certain state constitutions along with the US Constitution in order to fit their agenda. If your teaching anywhere in the Lewiston or Auburn school systems, your superiors need to be spoken to about what you are teaching the children of this area. But what good would that do, when most administrations belong to same social progressive movement you belong to.

Ok, let's look at this

Ok, let's look at this clown's points one by one then - "First, class, our elected officials voted for marriage equality because they are obliged to obey the Constitution" My copy of the Constitution does not include homosexual marriage, or marriage for that matter. As for the Equal Protection Clause argument, it is specious and does not apply. If you were to use this clause you could have it apply to anything. My neighbor has a BMW, so should I. Triumph would argue that since Gil is so good looking and smart, the feds should make it so that Triumph is also. (good luck with that one, it's tough work being this good looking and smart). You get the point.
"Second, Dumont is not correct — animals do not always pick..." Already been covered. Dumont may have made the point, but Lew tries to turn it to his advantage. SO FREAKING WHAT if some animals are gay, it still has nothing to do with us. I'm sure that these animals were only experimenting while away at camp/college/whatever. Point is that it makes no difference on the fact that homosexual couples, by definition of the word marriage, cannot have a marriage. Call it whatever you want, that word is taken. I don't care how many times Bugs Bunny seduces the Tasmanian Devil by crossdressing.
"Third, he asks why God made Adam and Eve" Another specious argument. Since the term marriage is, by definition, applied by religion, the rest of his argument falls apart. It doesn't matter if couples procreate or not, just that they area MAN and a WOMAN.

Call it a civil union and stop trying to force acceptance on those who never will. This fight is going to drive a bigger wedge between hetero and homo than there ever was before and no matter how it turns out, one side is going to resent the other.

While addressing the class a

While addressing the class a couple of things were not addressed. About 90% of schoolteachers are liberals. About 90% of newspapers, TV networks, and other media are liberal. Therefore if the class is to be taught anything they should be taught that they should think for themselves, and strive to find out what the other the other 10% of the information is about.

Wow, there are actually same sex pairings in nature? Guess that argument is gone, dang. Now all I can do is run around and whack my bible.______________________

Gil seems to have a reading

Gil seems to have a reading problem. Nowhere does the letter say that BECAUSE animals have same gender pairings, gays should be allowed to marry. Dumont stated that no animals have same gender pairing, continuing conservatives distortion of facts. Alessio corrected his error.

What an asinine letter from

What an asinine letter from someone I'm glad does not teach my kids. Because ANIMALS have same gender pairings, homosexuals should be able to marry? How often do you idiots on the left plan on using that as an excuse? If that's how it works, when will you libs begin eating your young? Or going at it in the front yard until we have to take a hose to you? You have already perfected the art of poo flinging, so I'm assuming the rest are not far behind. Anyone who uses that as an analogy for the basis of their argument is mental and needs to just be ignored.
