NORWAY — The owner of a single-family home was arrested Saturday evening for arson after allegedly trying to torch his own house, officials said.
Troy Murch Jr., 23, of 157 Ralph Richardson Road, was arrested by Norway police after allegedly dousing his living room in gasoline and setting it on fire, police said.
According to Chief Dennis Yates of the Norway Fire Department, no one was injured in the fire, and the blaze was quickly contained to the living room. Yates said the rest of the house was relatively intact.
Norway Officer Ron Cole said Murch was stopped by a Paris police officer as Murch was leaving his home. The officer had been called to the residence after Murch's ex-girlfriend called police to say Murch was distraught and threatening to burn down his house.
Cole said the responding officer was the first to report to the fire department. He said Murch immediately confessed to setting the fire.
Yates said fire units reached the house around 12:30 p.m. and had the blaze under control within 20 minutes. Fire departments from surrounding towns also responded, but Yates said they were sent home shortly thereafter.
Yates said one firefighter suffered heat exhaustion, but that he "should be OK."
Tim York of the State Fire Marshal's office said the living room sustained heat and smoke damage.
Murch was arrested and taken to the Oxford County Jail where will be held on $100,000 cash bail. He was scheduled to be arraigned Monday morning.

You can't just set your place
You can't just set your place on fire and call it good! :-\ It would be against the law because he had no fire permit for one! If the police arrested him obviously it's against the law to just torch your own home. That appears to be a new home and as others have stated, I highly doubt a 23 yr old paid cash for it. I don't think the mortgage company is really going to appreciate the fact that he tried to burn it down. As for fatandhappy calling candiceanne dumb....he/she didn't....they just stated that her comment was. Besides....in the past.....I have seen some VERY NASTY comments come from candiceanne, so someone saying her comment was dumb is mild.

It has always been arson to burn your own house down.
1. Any fire is a danger to the community. Physical injury and neighboring property damage are reason enough alone to charge a homeowner with arson/
2. The mortgage holder actually owns the house, not the "homeowner'. and they are left holding a loss unless insurance is up to date and it pays.
3. If the mortgage company doesn't take the loss then the insurance company does.
And yes, there is the occasioanl house that is paid for and the owner does not carry insurance, but this is rare, and it is still arson if you burn it down.
Most of the time the arsonist is trying burn down his own house to either cover up something inside, hurt someone inside, or simply trying to collect an isurance settlement. Perhaps this man was mentally unstable.....the investigation will sort it out.
Dang, Candice, that was a dumb statement you made.

Actually, you made my points for me. He was upset and threaten to burn the house down talking to his girlfriend on the phone. There was no covering up a crime involved. He did not attempt to make a claim on any insurance obviously and even told the fire department he set fire to the place, not a secret and there is no mention of a mortgage. Like I said, if you own it in Maine, I know of no law that says you can't bulldoze it, burn it or live in it which ever makes you happy.

Candice, read the Maine statutes, its there.
You and citygirl are quite the pair. You don't there is a state law against arson, even if it is your own house, and citygirl thinks there is a state law requiring dog owners to keep their dog on a leash. Both of you need to look up the statutes before you make these statements.
Candice, you said "He did not attempt to make a claim on any insurance obviously and even told the fire department he set fire to the place, not a secret and there is no mention of a mortgage."
He had just started the fire when the police arrived so he didn't have time to file an insurance claim yet. And since the story just broke I wouldn't expect for them to release the mortgage information in the first article. Newspaper articles rarely have all of the information on a story. The police don't usually release everything until the investigation is completed.
This is a young guy with a fairly new house, I doubt he owns it free and clear and doesn't have insurance on it.
And yes, he may have some mental problems that will affect his charges and sentence if found guilty, but still, regardless of that, arson is a Class A felony which carries alot of time. You can't just burn a house down, even if it is yours.
