Nutting's tirade belittles the man, and the office

Sen. John Nutting of Leeds is a successful farmer, an accomplished lawmaker and a very, very sore loser.

In office since 1986, he was among a slew of Democrats who lost their legislative seats during last week’s election as citizens exercised their free choice to support fiscal conservatives. Just because Nutting lost doesn’t mean he has to be ugly about it.

Especially since Nutting’s opponent, Garrett Mason, didn’t eke out an accidental win. He received 56 percent of the count to Nutting’s 44 percent, which is a decidedly triumphant result.

But, instead of accepting the loss with dignity, Nutting slammed Mason for such alleged crimes as “working retail,” and “living with his parents,” supporting vouchers for private schools and expressing Christian beliefs.

So what?

Mason is a young Republican who is proud of being “unabashedly pro-life.” He also wants Maine to pay down its debt. He wants to eliminate DirigoHealth and use Maine’s health dollars more wisely. He wants to streamline the permitting process for businesses and find some way to keep Maine’s youth in Maine.

He sought election to the District 17 seat because “I want to live and raise a family here in Maine. Maine is at a crossroads. We can either continue down the path of unsustainable debt, endless government regulation and outrageous taxes, or we can choose common sense solutions that will encourage the youth of Maine to stay.”

And, based on that campaign, Mason won the Senate seat.

The reason Mason works retail and lives with his parents in Lisbon is because, when he returned to Maine after graduating from college, he couldn’t find a job and — thus — can’t afford his own apartment. In that regard, he is like too many 25-year-old Mainers.

“And,” Mason said, “that’s really why I ran. Because I wanted … to stop my friends, the people I went to high school with and the people I know, I wanted to stop them from driving across the Kittery bridge” in search of work. He believes with real conviction that his voice in Augusta will make a difference, and voters agreed.

Nutting’s nasty response to his loss is so curious because the senator’s accomplishments in the Maine Legislature are substantial and he has much to be proud of. He has consistently been a leader in fighting to regulate pollution in the Androscoggin River, and has been devoted to serving Maine’s mentally ill and supporting our schools. His record on the environment is solid and he’s long been a champion of agricultural causes.

That said, this accomplished man has belittled himself and his record by his post-election remarks.

And, as Mason so ably noted, Nutting served “with distinction for the past 16 years, but it’s such a shame to end a political career with character assassination. It’s sad.”

In his remarks, including strangely snide “thanks” to his supporters, Nutting missed the important point that he didn’t win because an overwhelming number of his constituents didn’t think he was doing the job and they choose someone else. That’s how elections work, and life goes on.

Mason earned his votes, and we wish him good luck in accomplishing his goals.

If he sincerely wants to thank his supporters, Nutting, who knows the ropes in Augusta, would do better to give Mason a helping hand instead of slapping him around.

It would be the neighborly thing to do to accomplish what we all want, which is to make Maine work.

Nutting is an embarrassement

Nutting is an embarrassement to my hometown of Leeds. I was so excited when he got his butt kicked in this election. He is quoted as saying that Maine gov't isn't too big, Dirigo is a success and the business climate in Maine is a good one. He needed to go and I for one and glad for it! He is nothing but a tax and spend politicain.

Nutting resorted to the usual republican tactic except he was telling the truth. His opponent is a dangerous bigot who doesn't have any life experience. i'm pretty sore about it too, especially since a lot of the voters seem to have drunk the kool-aid.

Oh well

As a proud liberal in Sen. Nutting's district I can tell you his campaign was underwhelming. I mean, why would I vote for a Democrat who bills himself as a "fiscal conservative" when I can vote for the real thing? 2010 was the death of the Blue Dogs, and I for one say good riddance. I did vote for Nutting after all because the alternative was truly frightening.

I note that Sen. elect Mason certainly had slick mailings and lots and lots of signs posted about. I wonder where a young man living in his parents' basement does get that kind of money? Did he run as a Clean Election candidate? If not, one suspects he's got some dues to pay.

We'll see. Follow the money my friends.

Not the whole story

I agree with Ajax. If you had a chance to see the nice big signs or the nice mailers that went out for Mason, you'd see that they were paid for by Dale Crafts, a politician from the Lisbon area, who I believe is also related to Mason in some way. Now, is it possible that people voted for Mason due to the fact they have supported Crafts in the past?

And I find some contradiction with the statement, "The reason Mason works retail and lives with his parents in Lisbon is because, when he returned to Maine after graduating from college, he couldn’t find a job." Garrett Mason worked not only for the Lewiston Maineiacs hockey team for the past couple years, but he worked previously for the Portland Sea Dogs; 2 things that can be proven with photographs on the mailers he sent out for his campaign.

Nutting had every reason to be upset and make the comments he did because there is something fishy going on with his situation and it's too bad that the facts are coming out after the election.

Keep Nutting out

Now, I hope the district in which he lives keeps him out of any public office. His entitled attitude is gross...

Good Riddance

Nutting is a bully. Remember his treatment of the hospitals when they dared speak out against the State for not paying the bills it owed them? Now, he's engaged in character assassination of someone who seems like a fine young man, whether or not I or others agree with his opinions. If I were in Nutting's district, I would have relished voting against him; I say thank you to the 70% of those voters in his district that did so! Finally, one of the entrenched Dems gone. I saw Nutting's ad in the weekend SJ in which he was "thanking" his supporters; it was pretty pathetic. Good editorial SJ.

Which side of your mouth...?

The SJ editorial praises former Sen. Nutting for what he has substantially accomplished as a Maine legislator: "Nutting’s nasty response to his loss is so curious because the senator’s accomplishments in the Maine Legislature are substantial and he has much to be proud of. He has consistently been a leader in fighting to regulate pollution in the Androscoggin River, and has been devoted to serving Maine’s mentally ill and supporting our schools. His record on the environment is solid and he’s long been a champion of agricultural causes."

Then you support Mason, a new legislator, a Republican, with obviously different goals: "Mason earned his votes, and we wish him good luck in accomplishing his goals."

You would make a good politician, speaking, as we heard during the campaign from Governor-elect LePage, out of both sides of your mouth.

Entitlement mentality

It is so unfortunate that entrenched politicians feel that they are entitled to their political offices and cannot stand the thought of being out of office. How many politicians this year lost in primaries only to resurface as independent candidates for office?

Thanks to the Editorial Board

I am encouraged to see the editorial board is willing to make a statement such as this. Senator Nutting had to know that he was out of step with his district and the people of Maine. But regardless of his political opinions, he is wrong to demean his new Senator.
Senator Nutting's attitude is a revelation of the attitude of too many leaders of the Maine Democrat party. Instead of recognizing honest disagreement, they accuse others of hate and they treat people with obvious disdain.
I think Senator Mason will prove to be a successful senator but will make many friends on both sides of the political aisle.

Mr. Nutting sounds like a typical sore loser Democrat. He should of payed attention to the voters. It didn't take a genious to see we were fed up. And to Garrett Mason and the rest of the republicans the voters message is "give em hell".
