LEWISTON — Hawa Khamis motions to her throat and says through an interpreter that hunger was a constant problem at the refugee camp in Kenya.
It's where her son still lives, which is why Khamis, 69, is the legal guardian of her grandsons, Ibrahim Mohamed, 14, and Hassam Mohamed, 12. The boys' mother died in Africa. Their father, her son, has been in the refugee camp for 15 years.
“If you can bring him here, that would be great,” she said through an interpreter.
Khamis and her grandsons joined the Somali Bantu Youth Association of Maine to give her guidance adapting to a new culture, and help keep her grandsons on the straight and narrow. The boys help around the house, she said. They do some cooking, dishes and cleaning.
Khamis was born in Somalia and fled to Kenya because of war. She and some of her family went to Atlanta, Ga., then came to Lewiston in 2006.
Life at the camp was bad, she said.
“You never know if you're going to get something to eat tomorrow,” said Jama Warsame, a youth association leader.
Khamis can't read or write. In Somalia, she farmed. She wants more for her grandsons.
“I want them to get an education, to work,” she said. “With the help of God, I want them to be a doctor or teacher.”
Mother of five
Ambiya Bule, 34, is another parent involved in the Bantu Youth Association. She has five children, ages 1 to 14. She was born in Somalia, lived in a Kenyan refugee camp for 13 years, moved to Colorado in 2004, and to Lewiston in 2009.
She smiles broadly when she says she recently became a U.S. citizen.
Bule joined the association so her children could play soccer and keep out of trouble, and she could get help parenting in a new land.
“Here, there is no parenting for us,” she said through an interpreter.
Warsame explained that parents have lost the disciplinary ways they knew in Africa.
“It's different here,” he said. “Back home if they do something bad, we can use the cane or stick. But here, the only punishment we can do is talk to them.”
The look on Bule's face indicated that talking doesn't always work.
Through the association, parents are learning to set household rules and take away privileges, Warsame said. When his daughter misbehaves, he tells her she can't watch television. But the concept of grounding is new; it didn't exist in their old world.
Understanding the culture here is one of the biggest challenges for Somali Bantu families, Rilwan Osman said. Their children are adapting to American ways faster than their parents. Sometimes that's good; other times, it's not.
“The child has one culture; the parent has another,” Osman said. “They both come to the same house. It's like having two cultures in one house.”
Bule wants her children to be educated so they can read and write, "maybe become a professional soccer player, a doctor, and be active in the community.”
She doesn't want her children involved in juvenile crime.
“I don't want my kids to be part of that," she said. "I want them to learn.”
Youth leader
Warsame, 26, and his wife have five children, ages 2 months to 6 years. He works second shift.
He left Somalia in 1992 because of the war. He doesn't remember a lot about Somalia, but he remembers the refugee camp in Kenya, where he lived for 12 years and got some schooling.
For refugees who don't have anyone sending them money, “life is very hard,” he said. “You worry about food, violence. It's close to the border in Somalia. People come attack you because it's close. Every single day people get attacked. There's no police you can call.”
Children in families with money can get schooling; those without money do not, he said.
He's glad that now he doesn't have to worry about his children going to school.
“They have more than what I had,” he said. He hopes his oldest will be ready to graduate from high school 10 years from now. He speaks English well, but says his oldest daughter's English is better than his.
He volunteered to be a soccer coach, youth leader and translator to help others.
“The language barrier keeps the parents down,” Warsame said. “That's why we created the program for parents, to help explain what's going on.”

Some people have a real problem staying on subject. The sad thing is they ruin it for everyone else. I'm glad I'm not alone in recognizing this. The subject was about Bantu families adapting to the U.S. . Immediately it went off subject. There were those that attacked the Somali people, and those that defended the Somali people. I believe there were a few people that continued to incite arguments, putting others on the defensive. Mr. Fed-Up although he got a little hot under the collar spoke the truth. I didn't find him offensive at all. One persom went as far as to say, "I don't wear a sheet, but i do have a Klu Klux Klan and a White Power shirt. And i do wear them. I do believe that is covered under free speech." This person was one that was complaining against Mr. Fed-Up. To be quite honest, I found that person not only to be offensive, but very, very scary. I believe that was a statement made to intimidate the Somali people. Not one person that has complained against Mr. Fed-Up even mentioned the terrible statement this other person made. Infact the chatted with that person on and off. I believe as you do Mr. Tanner that someone needs a time out. That is the reward that childish school brats receive.

You neglect to include that i said that i have no problem with black people wearing Black Power-Black Panther or SLA shirts. Or that other races mostly prefer to stay segregated also. Preaves grew up in Phila. Pa. I think she knows what i am saying. I wonder if she agrees with this or not? There is a difference between the facts of life, and what some people think life should be.

I did not neglect to mention anything. Black Power-Black Panther or SLA shirts, KKK shirts are all one in the same...Hate. Whether Patty Preaves lived in Phila. Pa. or not doesn't justify hate...and I believe she would agree with me. Your slam was towards the Somali community, and was absolutely unacceptable. I was born and raised in Maine, and I was never raised to believe that bullying, prejudice, bigotry, racisim was an acceptable way of life. Kindness, compassion, and love of neighbor were the facts of life. I'm not sure how you were raised, but that is how I was raised. I attended Edward Little High school. We had three African American students that attended our high school. They were probably some of the most popular children in our school. I never heard a racial slur made against one of these students. It was unacceptable and we knew it...as you also know it. I don't believe for one minute that people prefer to stay segregated. I believe people are afraid. They perfer to stay and socialize with those they feel safest with.
In the last few years I have had the opportunity to live in Maryland, which is probably one of the most diverse states in the country. I don't believe there is one family that has lived on our street that had the same ethnic back ground, everyone was of different religions, and everyone watched out for everyone. To be quite honest the color of someones skin is about as important as the color of someones eyes, it's really quite refreshing. Yes, we have many Somalian people in our city. They are treated like everyone else...with respect and courtesy. People in Maryland are a very family based community, everyone respects the fact that everyone belongs to someone, and we all belong to one another too. It is really quite amazing. :)
Maine is our home, but we have had to relocate for awhile until there are jobs in Maine. I know personally the pain of being away from home, everyone and everything that one is familiar with. Of course I return home often to visit with our daughter's family, our grandchildren, friends and relatives too. I can't imagine how it would be never to be able to return home. I can't imagine how it would be if we were hated because we were from Maine. I feel deeply for the Somali Bantu people.
No, freyt...I will never find your behavior or your comments acceptable, at least not as long as you remain closed minded and prejudice . I know another way, a better way than your way....It's the way that life should be and it is a fact of life.

And where you live in Maryland are there no neighborhoods that are too dangerous for you to go into? I lived in Boston, Ma. from the late 1960s through most of the 1970s. There were neighborhoods that white people couldn't enter unless they wanted to wind up in a hospital or morgue. The same went for the minority races. There were neighborhoods that they could not enter without the same results. Only exception is daytime on the job and for instance i had to go into Roxbury or Columbia Heights, both black neighborhoods, i would have to have a black person from where i worked to be with me. That would keep me from being harmed as long as i kept my mouth shut. Believe me they let you know how much you were hated, and they let you know if you dared to be there alone you would be dead. If you were there after suppertime you most likely would be killed. The same went for blacks that entered certain white neighborhoods. That may have been over thirty years ago,but i still get back to Boston on occasion and i know for a fact the same goes today. It is the same in at least all the major cities in most of the U.S. And that is fact. I don't hate anyone, wish harm to anyone, or deny anyone their civil rights. But the truth is there are a lot of things in life that is not healthy to do,and some of it comes from all the races. I do not know what race you are,but if you are white i challenge you to walk through the Columbia Heights section of Dorchester, Ma. and then tell me i am wrong. I have lived what i spoke of.

Sounds to me like you're still living back in the 1960's/1970's. Is there still violence? Yes. But people usually behave badly out of fear. I don't know how many major cities you've lived in, but most of them are widely diversified. With so many different backgrounds there is no room for stereotyping, racism, or bigotry. In these major cities you're talking about, I beleive you'll find that most people get along quite well. There is no room today for shallow thinking. People help each other. In fact if more people realized that we are all one people, there would be no reason to live in the past. So basically what you're saying is that you're afraid. Afraid of change, afraid of the unknown. So you lash out at the most vulnerable, minorities. You back them in a corner until they fight back, and now you make a case against them for defending themselves. Wherever you go if you're looking for trouble you can find it. Because you are creating your own trouble with your mentality.

I have no problem helping the somalis on the welfare system however there needs to be a time limit for them as well as anyone on the welfare system. The main problem I have with alot of the somalis receiving every bit of welfare over others is the somalis when they came here came with thousands and thousands of dollars worth of gold jewelry they didnt not have to claim as they had their women wear under their garments so they could not be searched. I know this and have seen it first hand. I feel that they should have to declare it as assets the same as everyday folks have to claim all their assets. As for racism and bigotry I invite any of you who keep calling us all that to enter into one of their stores or business and see how you are treated. I know some of the somalis who have done what they needed to become a citizen and make their lives better by working and for those who have I applaud you. For fed up what you are probably not aware is if 2 families enter DHS at the same time with the exact needs and qualifications 1 being somalis and 1 being born here in this country the ones born here are put to the back of the line until all the immigrant families are taken care of first and that is WRONG!!!!!! You tell us we need to be accepting however when we are constantly looked down on by them and disrespected by them at times it is hard to accept them into our country. I invite you to come to the lewiston area and just go into stores where the somalis are shopping and see how they react when they need assistance on something while the clerk is waiting on you. They will literally scream louder for the clerk to leave you to go wait on them and at times push you out of the way to wait on them because they EXPECT us to wait on them beckoning call. This I have seen and experienced first hand. Again I have met some great somalis however unfortunately as a whole the bad out number the good ones.

fedupinlewiston, as Americans we are born leaders. At least that's what we would want the world to believe. It's hard to make the world see this, or even our own children see this, when the mentality of alot of Mainers is me first, I, I, I. Instead of ridiculing and complaining, set the example that you would like to have the Somali people follow. I can't refute what you're saying about your experience with these people. I can only speak of my experiences. I have stood in line at Hannaford in Auburn on more than one occasion behind a Somali person. On most occasions the Somali person motioned me to go ahead of them. The thing that struck me was on one occasion it was winter and this person had sandels on. There was snow on the ground and it was cold as all get out. As an American I would of said to myself, me first, but not this Somali person. So they don't know all our ways, big deal. Our ways aren't always right either. Read the SJ, your proof is there. You speak of your treatment in their stores? Well, your lucky you're not Somali walking into most American stores, where you're followed around by a salesperson, or gawked at by everyone in that store. They have trust issues and we do too. I have a family member that lives in Auburn. She was telling me that she had just recently moved and had Somali neighbors. I asked her how her experience was. She said, she had never received a welcome gift in her life before moving to this place. She said, the Somali woman came and brought her a turnip and said, welcome. This poor woman thought she was offering a squash. Heck it's the thought that counts. She said her neighbors were very clean and the outside was clean also. She also said that across the way other Somali families were not so clean and she thought perhaps it had something to do with that particular tribe. I guess the people in this neighborhood are all working to teach them how to keep things clean. We should be doing the same with alot of our own natives that believe that having 3-4 unregistered junk cars in their driveways is alright. By your example you will lead. If the Somali person behind you is screaming over you to get attention, turn to that person, smile, and explain in America we must all wait our turns. Then compliment that person for having been so patient. If Americans are leaders, then let's teach them kindness, compassion and a better way to live. You say you're a Mainer, then stop being a yellowed bellied sap sucker (coward) and lead the way.

Would you like to respond? Login or create a new account. You'll need to verify your account before you can respond.Take a minute
Take a minute to realize a few "hard" truths....the Somali's were brought here by Catholic Charities and left with no resources in this city to handle them. A few years ago the mayor asked for them to stop the influx in order for the city to get a handle on what resources were needed to assist the immigrants in adapting to this new culture and to assist the native population in understanding the Somali culture. He was attacked in the press for his letter just asking for time in order to help make adjustments easier all the way around. Somali parents did not learn the American ways as quickly as their children and in many instances Americans had to rely on the children to interpret for them when communicating with the adults. There was a lack of interpreters and still is to help with the language barrier. In some cases the children didn't interpret accurately (especially if it was because they had done something wrong). This led to many hard feelings between adults of both immigrants and natives. As far as the adults learning English and using it...there are many courses that teach the English language to the Somali population at no charge but there are no courses that I have been able to find to teach the Somali language to Americans. It has appeared over the years that the Somali people have received special consideration in many areas and that has also led to animosity between cultures. There are many Somali adults who would like to succeed in this country and many Americans who would like to see them succeed. I am one person who should be upset with the Somali population being here. My son has been threatened, bullied, attacked, chased, and called names by some of the Somali children. However, my concern isn't how my son was treated, my concern is what is becoming of this nation's children when parents are afraid to discipline their children out of fear of the "system", when the juvenile detention system is so overwhelmed it has to pick and choose who to charge and who to send to another organization for help, when police look at us and say "what do you want us to do about it", and when our schools are so overwhelmed by the numbers of non English speaking students that they can't take the time to actually teach our children what they need to know in order to not be a failing school in this state. Maybe we all need to take a hard look at these things and stop the name calling, the throwing of accusations of racism and bigotry, and maybe we need to find a part of the solution instead of putting the blame on one group of people or another.

I blocked Candice until Nov. 18. Judy Meyer, our managing editor, talked to the Rumford Police Department and they did respond to her call and found no one there trying to break into her house. Then she kept posting comments saying that the police did not come, which is in violation of our commenting policy.
I like Candice and I think that she adds a lot to this community. But she broke the rules. Repeatedly. So she got banned for a week. That's what happened.

Hope she is back soon. I have a lot of respect for her comments. She is a true Mainer, and knows what the real Maine is all about. Her comments are truthful and well informed. Unlike all the people from away, that move here for the good life. Once here they want to change Maines values to their values from some craphole city from another state. Most of them cannot come up with an intelligent rebuttal. They can only resort to namecalling. We true Mainers call southern Maine "Northern Massachusetts" and i include Lewiston/Auburn in that group. The only reason they are here are for all the liberal benefits and freebies. Check out the " Maine Rap Song" by Eben - on youtube, he says it best " I hate those sob's from away.

It would seem from your comment that you are a Republican…. Again, that you can't grasp the truth makes you a typical Republican, no matter what you call yourself.

Mac,
... and you're apparently clueless.
Why don't you learn the difference between your "gut" and actual reality before spouting off about things you don't even grasp, insulting Moore and "the lot." Moore, Franken, and "the lot" are one heck of a lot more patriotic than George W. Bush, six deferment Cheney, and "the lot."

Your comment says it all about you. Your rhetoric is rather like Dick Cheney, a guy so soft he's a sponge, talking "tough." Ever been anywhere but in front of you mom's TV playing video games? It's easy to be tough and call for "internment camps" when you're spending your life hiding out, eh "Pirate"? Do you have "Pirates" on your bedsheets? Sure, along with a Mickey Mouse lamp. "Internment camps" indeed.

Citygirl,
Isn't it odd that you and other right wingnuts are more concerned with individuals who flare your red state synapses than expressing your own counterpoints? It actually isn't surprising since for the most part, right wing Republicans can't argue on a level playing field of ideas and don't base their "beliefs" on objective reality. This is how children think and that is really who Republicans are, children all grown up without the maturity expected of rational adults. It is why Congressional Republicans continually place America's future in jeopardy in a gambit to win power at all costs. Sick but predictable. It's who Republicans are. Republican: Irrational. Angry. Vindictive
And my personal favorite:

Dumb --- Mainers. Scumbag's and Looser's. You are probably the most uneducated people in the country. If it wasn't so sad it would be laughable. Your Dumb---state is the highest taxed, with the lowest payscale in the country and let's not forget about your unemployment rate, your Workmens Comp record and your Disability benefits for all the drunks and drug addicts in your low life, low living state. It's a wise move to allow the Somali people to live in your towns and cities. It will be the first time in years that Maine will have a real workforce that is willing to work. Maine people are known for being dumb as a doornails and lazy too. It's no coincidence that Maine hasn't any jobs. No one is stupid enough to bring their companies there. The only bargaining chip you may have in bringing work to your low life state are these Somali people.

Jabba, I agree...If these neigh sayers took even one minute out of their day to educate themselves and become informed, perhaps they would find that it's not a joke to click disagree for the thrill of being antagonistic. We live in very sad times...but we had better hope that we are never given the opportunity to live the lives of the Somali Bantu people. In life what goes around comes around. To sow seeds of compassion is to be guaranteed a harvest of compassion. To be charitable is a guaranteed harvest of blessings. To demean and to ridicule those that have suffered most in this world is a guarantee that your harvest of suffering, too will be plentiful.
I have to say, Although we have many good and decent people in Maine, for the first time in my life I am truly ashamed to say that this is where I was born and raised.

Like i said in my earlier post. Why do you not move to their neighborhoods, instead of bringing them here and forcing them on me. Why not diversify their neighborhood or country. Why not go to their country and teach them how to change their lives. The Samolis are here because they are too afraid to stand up and fight for their beliefs in their own country. Most of these countries hate America, but the people are glad to come here to run away from their problems. And yes everyone is bigoted to some degree. We just learn to be tolerant of others. Do you really think that you are welcome in their neighborhoods. Only if you have something they want. Once your pockets are empty you had better leave and in a hurry. The minorities are far less tolerant of us than we are of them. Go ahead and move into the minority neighborhood that i mentioned in my first post. If your lucky you will go to a hospital and not a morgue. I too can remember when Maine was a great state. There was no excuse for not having a job. There was an abundance of jobs, that competed for workers. Maine was quaint and that was the charm of it. Maine was a way of life. But it has steadily gone down hill for forty years now. Thanks to you folks that want to diversify and make Maine like NYC or Ca. Now back to the Samolis. Did your town leaders give the citizens a vote on whether to bring the Samalis here. Or even ask your opinion. No. It was surprise they are here, and there is nothing you can do about it. They were forced on us. All that happened was another states burden was dumped on us.

Judging others when you don't even know what your talking about. Try putting yourself in their shoes. Imagine your children being put in a similar situation. If you did I don't think you'd be so quick to judge. They haven't changed life in Maine. People like you have. Remember, when this country started the people were Very diverse.

I am no fan of the idea of diversification for the sake of diversification. I wish the Catholic Charities of Maine would have found other ways to spend their time and money, and now I wish they spend more of it to help with the Somali immigrants. But...
How can we blame these Somali immigrants for wanting to make life better for their children and themselves? How can we blame them for fleeing refugee camps when given the opportunity? How can we blame them for fleeing hunger, poverty, and racial oppression? We are the ones with the torch burning in the harbor. The promise of religious and political freedom. The promise of of a better life. The promise of the American dream, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
This is, as a nation, what we are all about. This is how and why our nation was founded. This is exactly what makes our nation great.
Let's give these people a chance for Pete's sake. We do not encourage them to assimilate by beating them down. We encourage them to assimilate by teaching them the meaning of the American dream, by showing them what is great about being an American, by showing them what is great about our American culture. We exasperate assimilation problems by being unkind.
Look back at the history of Irish immigrants too America. They were fleeing poverty, famine, and English oppression. They were unwanted, disliked, and cursed by the existing population. Now several generations later, we celebrate their heritage every year and some of our most venerated American families are of Irish descent.
What about the in-flux of French-Canadian immigrants? No jobs in Canada. Not enough fertile, affordable, farmland. They too saw the promise of America and came by the thousands. Many of that first generation still do not speak English, though they have been here for forty or fifty years or more.
Let's not expect more from the Somalis than we got from our own parents and grandparents. Give them a chance. Reach out to them with an open hand don't beat them down with the back of your hand. Peace.

You've "diversified" every single nation that has Western European origins with all this wonderful "diversity" and "multiculturism" and made them far better for it. I always thought the quaint New England State-O-Maine had altogether too many White faces; thank you for bringing it up to speed with the rest of the country and world.
Now what you enlightened humanitarians need to do is work on those nations that still posses homogenous ethnic populations such as Japan and China as they have not experienced the wonders of diversity such as the formerly homogenous nations like Sweden and Norway (as a prime example) that anyone who does any research at all can see what it does to a country ("enriches" the lives of everyone who lives in it, oh yes!)
Keep up the good work Comrades, you're truly getting there, and don't let up in "enriching" Maine either, it still has that old fashioned "New Englandie" feel to it. let's get it to that "modern" multicultrual utopia as quickly as possible please!

Would you like to respond? Login or create a new account. You'll need to verify your account before you can respond.Welcome to the Somali Bantu people :)
Hawa Khamis with her two grandsons...A grandmother raising her two grandson's. A woman that is nearly seventy years of age. A grandmother that does not understand the language, has no idea as to what most signs say. Self-imposed exile is probably one of the most heart wrenching, frightening and painful experiences that anyone could possibly have to live through.
She is in a community where some of its citizens make sure she knows she is not welcome and her grandchildren are not either. Yet, her main concern is to keep her grandchildren safe inspite of the fact that they are not wanted in there homeland or in this community either. I can't imagine being this woman.
I want to say, Hawa, you are a very brave and courageous woman. Given all the money in the world, I would never want to have to live what you have and are having to live through. God is with you...and you are not alone. I took the time this morning to read about the Somali Bantu...I wanted to be informed, I wanted to know what brought you here to our great country...I wanted to understand. After some reading, I sat in my rocker and thanked God that he brought you here. I was grateful that you and your grandchildren would be protected and that you would have food, housing, medical services and hopefully a better life. But most of all I am humbled. How we complain about what we don't have instead of being grateful for what we do have. Many American's have lost their jobs, and some have lost their homes to foreclosures too. Yet on our very worst day, at the heigth of our greatest sufferings...we have never suffered anywhere near what your people have suffered. Sometimes in life in doing the right thing we stand alone, and sometimes others will stand with us. So today whether I stand alone or with others that believe as I do...I want to say, Welcome, Hawa Khamis. If you should ever feel afraid, or if you should find yourself lost on one of our streets, please reach out, many of us would be honored to comfort, and direct you to where you need to be in our great cities.
God bless you always.
I wish that everyone would take the time to read about the Somali Bantu people, perhaps then we would find ourselves reaching out instead of clenching our fists.

What you think you would do and what you would do are two completely different things. How about this, we'll take your mother and her two grandchildren, drop her off in the middle of the Sudan or the Congo and see what she would and could do. You freakin Mainers, especially the ones that are barely comprehendable. The country is laughing at all of you. You're the only state that hasn't been taught how to pronounce the letter "R" as though it never existed in the alphabet. Most of you are so uneducated you can barely read or write. You sure know how to stand in the welfare, disability, and workmens comp lines though. Hypocrites. Your cities are dirty, your malls are falling apart, your churches are closing, and jobs are a thing of the past for your state. Other states are building and working, and prospering. These are the most diverse states in the country. The best thing that has happened to Maine in years are the Somali people. Maines largest export are its people. They have decided to move and join the rest of the world, where people aren't judged by the color of their skin. Where its a good thing to make a decent living and no one is going to be jealous that you might be earning more than they do. Your state is a joke and it's all you Mainers faults.

I don't believe you would have much of a choice. Especially when you first arrived. I believe in order to get a job these people would have to like you. They would also have to have jobs available, housing too. Seeings that you had two grandchildren, I believe you would also have to find a safe daycare. Some place where the people at least spoke your language so that your grandchildren could feel understood while learning the new language. A place that would make your grandchildren feel welcomed. You would also have to change your complete way of living and thinking, especially if you were dropped off in the middle of the Sudan or in Iraq or perhaps even in Iran. Yes, a place where people hated you and your grandchildren for the color of your skin, for the color of your eyes, because you're an American..
Just imagine, how smart these people would think you were? You do not know the language, their streets, their laws, their way of living or thinking. I don't believe you would be considered the brightest crayon in the crayon box. Yet, how could they blame you, how would this be your fault? Goodness, you would be stepping out of one world into another completely different world. Imagine those that were kind enough to look out for you and help you to get aquainted...think of them being ridiculed for helping you and your grandchildren. It's pretty disturbing to say the least. It's bewildering to think that those that have always had the advantages and comfort of home can feel jealous and angry towards those that have had little or nothing all of their lives....those that no longer have a home or country. I imagine that for those that do not believe in God its no skin off their noses...but for those that do, they already know the consequence of this type of malice... and one day they will surely pay the price when exiting this world into the next world. There's a saying Eco, I think it was intended for people that like to judge and demean others. Here goes...The only time you should look down on a person is when you are helping them get up. I believe that's what we should all start doing.

I expected there would be a riot going on here in the comment section....But..it's still early...To say that everyone has some "bigotry" in them is wrong...KKK and white sheets?...What the heck?....Maine is not the only State that is dealing with the influx of Somalians or others taking up space in our State....I do agree that "birth control" to be an issue among our newly adopted neighbors..Look at this story and how long some of these "Refugees" have been in the US and look at the ages of there children...they have had...since they have been here....I would think that the people responsible for bringing the "Refugees" here would start them off with basic living skills that I learned as a child...I always had a paper route....or babysat...then when I was old enough, I had a 20 hour a week job while in High School...This is what was expected of me in my household...And I was also expected to stay out of trouble, stay in school, get good grades, but also to have some fun while doing it....The elderly lady here with her two grandchildren STILL can't speak english?....EVERYONE is teachable know matter where you come from...And some in this article are complaining that there are no "Parenting" classes here for them?...There are "Parenting" classes going on all the time in both twin cities...But there's where the "Language" barrier comes in...I think the SJ should have interviewed "New Refugees" for this article...b/c XYZ is right in what he had to say in his comment about the "Bigots" not being here yet...I am not against the Somalian Community at all...but please..give us all a break and do as we do...speak english...get a job....your past is your past...you have been given a GIFT to come here...start being part of your own solution...don't continue to be part of your own problems and then..maybe then....people would look differently at you....I am beginning to wonder, as people have said this here before, is the SJ biased when it comes to the Somalian Community?....Was this story really newsworthy when it's all about what people are complaining about when it comes to the Somalian Community?...Next time maybe you could "Highlite" a Somalian Family where both parents are working, there kids are in school or college...a "Success Story"...yes I have seen maybe one that I can remember..about the single mom...but come on now...Really SJ?....

There would have to be a success story for SJ to do that. SJ probably can't find one and write about what they do fine.

I'm originally from Maine. Been trying to get back. Send them back! To what? You racist people have so much advise. Why don't you do some homework and really try to find out where they came from and what it was like for them. It's amazing to me how much advise a bigot is willing to give, but all people here is ignorance. Are they living in the best part of town? no!!! Not to mention the building's they live in were deteriorating before they got here. Seriously people what exactly are you complaining about. Most of you would'nt even live in these places. It sounds to me like your all jealous low lives who don't know anything about humanity or loving thy neighbor. Shame on all of you. The reason the state of Maine is doing so badly isn't because of somalian's, It's because of racist, simple minded losers who refuse to change. No change! No progress! Get over it!

I've heard many reasons why these people keep coming here to Maine. They have all been from bleeding heart type people. Not one of them has given the reason for the growing Somali population to be that Maine has a very liberal welfare system. Why would people move here? We have high taxes, poor job outlook, and Lewiston isn't exactly the cleanest city. Hmmmmm, it must be the welfare! There is a big problem if people moving to this state do it for the welfare.

Don't tell me you are not bigoted. There's not a person on this planet that is not bigoted to some degree. It's been with us since the beginning of our time on this planet. You are to afraid someone may call you a bigot if you are not politically correct. Add years of political and media brainwahing to that. But then liberals live in a fantasy world. I grew up in a segragated world. You think segregation has to do with civil rights? Wrong, it has to do with big money and the real powers that be. They mixed the minorities and the white working class together in the same pot and stirred. They don't deal with or live with minorities, their underlings do. Make your home in the middle of the Samoli neighborhood, or Roxbury, Ma. or the Columbia Point section of Dorchester, Ma. and tell me you are not bigoted after that. You have no idea what real hate and bigotry is until you venture into their neighborhood. If you are not a bigot why do you not move to their neighborhood to do all your good things, instead of bringing them to my neighborhood and forcing them on me. I have dealt with minorities in the workplace for over forty years and have no problem with that. When i am away from the workplace i prefer to segregate. It is my right to do so and see nothing wrong with it. The vast majority of the races segregate away from the workplace. Call me a bigot, i could care less about what you think. PC is for over sensitive little girls. So what do you think of the real world? I challenge the LSJ editor police to not delete this. Or do they not care about both sides of the issue?

I don't wear a sheet, but i do have a Klu Klux Klan and a White Power shirt. And i do wear them. I do believe that is covered under free speech. And i could care less who dislikes it. At the same time i have no problem with afro americans wearing Black Power or Black Panther or SLA shirts.

I have given you two posts to respond to. All you can do is dodge my issues and talk about sheets. If you do not like my views on life come up with an intelligent thought out reply. My responses were to your posts, which frankly sound like mindless rants.

but I can hear them coming. The bigots where are they? Not to worry they will be here soon. Maybe they are still trying to attach their new confederate battle flag to their tricycle, I will even post some of their favorite song
"Wearin' of the Grey" (1866)
Written by Tar Heel
Arranged for the Piano Forte
Oh! Johnny dear, and did you hear, the news that's lately spread,
That nevermore the Southern cross must rear its stately head;
The "White and Red's" forbid by law, so Northmen proudly say,
Nor you, nor I, can e'er again be "Wearin' of the Grey!"
And when we meet with strangers, who take us by the hand,
Enquiring warmly of the South, our own beloved land.
We've bound to tell the woeful truth, let cost whate're it may,
That some are threaten'd e'en with death, for "Wearin' of the Grey!"
CHORUS
We've bound to tell the woful truth, let cost whate're it may,
That some are threaten'd e'en with death, for "Wearin' of the Grey!".
Yeehaaaaa youbetcha!!! ROFL!!
