Tax cut or tax increase

Over the past few months, I’ve been reading about the Bush tax cuts expiring and what it’s going to cost to keep them. So, I figured it’s about time for a basic math class.

Taxes are money that is taken from people in order to run the government. That is not money already in people's hands, so if an individual gets paid $100 today and is taxed $20, he takes home $80. No matter how you look at it, the $20 was that individual's money to start with, not the government's. So, any money that is taken is an increase in what was taken previously.

When the president says it will cost $700 billion to give rich people a tax cut, what he really means is that he has already spent $700 billion and feels that class warfare is the way to pay for it.

I am not a rich person, but feel I have never been employed by a poor person or one on welfare. It takes money to create jobs.

One tidbit about government jobs that pay better than average jobs. We should put a stop to it, because we average minions are the ones paying for those jobs — they are paid for by taxing the middle class, not the people on welfare.

That's something to think about when our men and women in the armed services make less than most welfare recipients.

Duane Dumont, Winthrop

go back to third grade. You need a refresher math

First, glad you are a supporter of Lenin who first proposed "One tidbit about government jobs that pay better than average jobs. We should put a stop to it..." this in 1871.
Second, Its not class warfare to propose that the people who gain the most from government activities pay the most for the services they use.
Third, Obama didn't spend the $700 billion, Bush did. If you remember Bush borrowed $2.1 trillion from the Chinese to fund these tax cuts. Now the question is do we extend them all or some or not. Well, the tax cuts for millionaires do not help the economy; they won't get one person a job; they didn't get one person a job over the last 7 years. They were simply an irresponsible, job-killing subsidy (new politically correct term is bailout) for the very rich.
Fourth I'm not a slave like you are Duane. No rich man ever gave me a job. Rich men agreed to a contract with me in which I would be paid because they expected to make unearned profit off my labor.
Fifth, you minions are paying for those jobs because you allow the rich to avoid their fair share of taxes. You allow the military and teachers and many others to be paid far less than they are worth so that already rich folks can become richer off your labor.
Last 10 years the middle class has lost 5% of its standard of living. Last 30 years 25% of their standard of living. All because you let the rich folks get a get deal for nothing.

The top 5% of wealthy folks

The top 5% of wealthy folks in this Country already pay over 85% of all taxes now. I suppose some of you folks would have them pay 105%???

Well stated

But don't worry, the 2010 elections have set the pendulum moving the other way.... to the right. If the lame duck democrats don't realize it, and the cuts are allowed to expire, their remaining cohorts will join them on the sidelines in Jan 2013.

The outrage when people open their first paycheck of 2011 will add fuel to the fire.

I suppose...

Since we all hate taxes so much...let's just start eliminating...

Schools, public water and waste disposal, public works, police and fire departments, courts, DHS (without a referral, that guy from Farmington could have kept his "relationship" going with that 13 year old girl...lucky him in Mr. Dumont's world), wildlife and environmental services, transportation, communication and utility infrastructure...just to name a few...

"Give to Caesar what is Caesar's"...Sorry Mr. Dumont...I'll gladly pay my 20 bucks

Trickle down is Voodo

George Bush Senior had it right - trickle down is really Voodoo economics.
That's not to say it doesn't work. Anytime the government takes money and puts it to a domestic use(either through government programs or tax cuts) it will stimulate teh economy.

The problem is how effective it is and for who. Income disparity is way up over the past 30 years. I think that when the government focuses on trickle up solutions, that more of the money is spent vs being saved, and therefore it helps the economy more.

Spoken like a true tool of Faux News and Rush.....

Duane, they've got you so pumped full of B.S. it's sprouting out your ears....

Now who on welfare is making more than those in the military?? Even with two wars (and not very popular ones at that) the pay is high enough that we don't require a draft to fill the ranks.

"Class Warfare?" They've taught you the buzz-words well. Demand 'Class Responsibility' and let the wealthy shoulder the tax rates that they did when Ronald Reagan was President. They seemed appropriate enough then.

Are you saying that enlisted military personnel are making more than $45K annually?

Are you saying that people on welfare make more than $45K a year? Because I find that impossible to believe.

difficult to discuss things

difficult to discuss things logically with people who believe such foolishness, isn't it. But that is what the rabid right believes, reinforced by FOX News. If only they'd believe the truth we might have a chance to solve some of our problems.

How's that trickle-up theory

How's that trickle-up theory of bail-out working? Very well, if you believe the created-or-saved balderdash. Just print a mountain of money not backed by anything. Up or down, it's a mountain. The difference is, with the Bush tax cuts, everyone gets to decide what to do with more of their earnings; without, the decisions are made by politicians.

And yet another believer in

And yet another believer in the "trickle-down" theory. It didn't work under Reagan, it didn't work under Bush I, and it didn't work under Bush II. So exactly why should we continue to believe that it's ever going to work? Bush II passed his tax cuts in 2006, with a Republican Congress. Since then, can you tell me how many jobs were created directly as a result of those tax cuts? Hmmmm? Well, maybe the illegal alien cleaning Meg Whitman's mansion-oh wait, she used the money she saved shipping American jobs overseas.

The IRS will gladly take a

The IRS will gladly take a personal check from any taxpayer who doesn't feel he's paying his fair share of taxes. Those against the tax cuts are free to pay more if they wish. (The sound of crickets can be heard off in the distance.)

It is well put

but you forgot that all those current billionaire's forefathers at least worked their way up from being poor. Try it now, with trickle down economics. The trickle no longer makes it out of the bottle much less to the bottom. I was young once myself and am thankful we had way more opportunity than young people today. Blame it on who you want but the poor are already paying and the rich are headed for DUBAI.

And here I thought it just took hard work.

Hmmm. I thought it just took hard work to make it. There sure are some great examples out their of people from my era who made it like, Steve Job and Steve Wazniak of Apple Computers, Bill Gates of Microsoft and Maine Authors Stephen and Tabitha King to name just five who went from rags to riches all on their own. You can't just sit on your but collecting welfare and get rich, you got to break a sweat, which may be the problem.

Maybe the 'Kings' came from Rags.... (not quite)

But not Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, or Wozniak.

Bill Gates of Harvard and Prep School back-ground is not exactly your "Rags to Riches" example there, armymom. Not when you're William Gates IV. Jobs didn't come from 'Rags' but did trade in his western duds for a shaved head and Indian clothing during his search for enlightenment and psychdelics in India. Steve Wozniak, a childhood friends of Jobs, was also hopelessly middle class. Hard-workers - yes! Rags? Eh...not really......
