The protest organized by Lyndon LaRouche in front of post offices across the state (Short takes, Dec. 4) was news to me.
Signs comparing President Barack Obama to Adolf Hitler and circulating petitions to impeach Obama reveal an ignorance of the history of the Hitler-led Holocaust. It also reveals an irrational hatred and scapegoating which is similar to the hatred and scapegoating of Jews which Hitler inspired. It appears that those who are accusing Obama of being like Hitler are, in fact, behaving in ways sickeningly reminiscent of Hitler.
The editorial mentioned that when petition-gatherers in Brunswick and Lewiston were questioned about actions and motivations, they declined to explain. That leads me to think they are acting from no real conviction other than irrational hatred.
Who is fanning the hatred?
Maybe they are being paid to perform an action they really have no knowledge of?

This just goes to show how far the right of the Republican party has gone. Basically the Republican party is a gaggle of lunitics barking at the moon, it isn't even a functional party anymore. The rhetoric is so extreme because there isn't any balance within that "party" and therefore, the extremism is unbridled.

Why I use this image, an equality symbol for my icon image is a personal decision. My motives are as obvious as the image. Equality is an asperation for all of us, regardless of who we are. Sadly, for many equality has yet to be achieved. It's not a concept that needs much explaination, much less something to question. It's kind of obvious, wouldn't you say?

I am equal in every way that I have earned. I am 51 years old and my equality is based on my character, and the accumilation of my past deeds, both good and bad. In the end, I am superior to a few, and inferior to most, but my position in life is justified by the way I have lived.
I earned who I am today, both the good and the bad. And I am solely accountable for who I am. Nobody can take away from my equality, and nobody can add to it. My equality is no one else's responsibility but my own.
I have no right to demand equality, I get what I deserve.
And I am fine with that.

Integrity is an important part of individual character. It's something to strive for and certainly something to admire. But equality is a more specific term than what you describe. In my opinion, equality is about a fair society, where everyone participates (and is responsible) in the same measure. Economically, socially, politically. It's as simple as that. To measure a persons character after all is said and done speaks to them alone. Equality speaks to society as a whole. It's something I hope to see come true in my lifetime.

But the problem with your post is that today we have people of very questionable integrity and morals that are demanding equality.
The demand for acceptance of immoral perversions is not an argument for equality.
One of my favorite quotes is: "If you don't like my opinion of you, then improve yourself"
In other words, if someone has problems with being equal in today's society, then they need to take a look at themselves instead of everyone else, because that is probably where the problem lies.

I've been waiting for that caveat. I know you'd let out with it sooner or later. So inequality it is then for those whom you believe deserve less than you. Because of what? According to your post, it would seem one must meet a specific criteria in order to receive (or deserve) equal treatment, equal access, equal opportunity. That's too bad. Should you encourage others to aspire to a better, more productive way of living, that's really something quite nice. But assigning value based on your singular point of view is exactly how discrimination begins. And that's what equality is all about — fighting against bias to assure that everyone has a fair chance at (wait for it . . .) "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."

A person can be discriminated against becaused of his race or nationality. But how can one be discriminated against because of his behavior? That makes no sense.
What if I wake up one day and decide that I am different from 0ver 95% of the normal population? Should i start whining for special rights also? Should I cram it down the other 95% of the people's throats? Does everyone owe me acceptance even though they are repulsed by my behavior?
And do I have a right to call them "phobes" and "bigots" if they reject my behavior?
Think about it, it isn't logical.

Obama posed as a candidate who would reverse the policy atrocities of the Bush administration. Instead, he has magnified them. And regarding the health care policy, the Hitler analogy is appropriate. When Hitler started the T-4 policy, he didn't proclaim it as a policy for genocide -- it was merely "responsible cost-cutting." If someone had raised a hue and cry about it then, maybe it could have been stopped, but the population fell for the cost-cutting propaganda. We owe a debt of gratitude to the LaRouche people for raising a hue and cry about it now.

Your comment is pretty vile. Hitler was a despotic megalomaniac who was consumed with world domination. Toward that end, he devised a vision for Germany that did not include certain people — Jews among them. The atrocities he committed are beyond comprehension even to this day. Comparing anyone to Hitler is far from appropriate. It's disrespectful for one and pretty darn (how can I say this without sounding like a jerk), well never mind, it's just wrong. To minimize Hitler's crimes as merely "cost-cutting" while comparing those measures to President Obama is inane. Perhaps you should look toward Congress for those same comparisons. Everyone's talking about "cost-cutting", everyone.

When Hitler first came in, he did not appear to be a monster to most people. The New York Times was singing the praises of his new, dynamic style of leadership. He did not immediately commence a program of genocide -- that crept in gradually and discreetly, and most Germans found out about it after the war was over. HOWEVER -- anyone with a brain should have smelled the foul aroma when the talk of "cost-cutting" began, because what were actually being cut were the lives of the mentally ill and those with expensive or incurable diseases. You say that today, "Everyone's talking about "cost-cutting", everyone," which means it is time to SOUND THE ALARM.

I'll add one thing in hopes that you will not continue to miss my point. As American Dr. Leo Alexander pointed out at the Nuremburg War Crimes Tribunal after the end of the war, the genocide began quietly in the hospitals, and because it was not stopped there, it gathered momentum, until it grew to the dimensions of mass extermination. This time, if you wait until you see mass extermination, it will be too late to stop it. Stop it NOW.

Still, you try to rationalize the comparison between Obama and Hitler. Clearly you just don't get it. More to the point, I'm assuming it wouldn't serve your argument not to. But if you want to search through history to explain Hitler's raise to power than help yourself. The difference between Hitler and Obama - and history will bear this out - is that Hitler was an insane xenophobe, Obama is not. Comparing Nazi Germany to this nation at this point in time serves nobody. It's hardly accurate and most important, it's disrespectful to our President, our country, 6 million Jews and countless homosexuals, Russians, Gypsies and so many more.

The point of her letter (and I agree) is with their method of protest. For anyone to draw a comparison between anyone and Adolf Hitler is extreme and in the case of those protesters in Brunswick and Lewiston, clearly meant create, if not inspire hatred.

The point is that while I may disagree with the message, the medium, or both, I would defend to the death their right to voice it. Once you begin prohibiting people from expressing their opinions - no matter how vile the message or disgusting the orator - where do you draw the line? Maybe begin censoring news outlets? Restrict religious observations and services? Condone illegal searches and seizures by police authorities? Allow the State to decide what's best for your children? (Ooops, too late for that one). Once you start down that slippery slope, it's extremely hard to stop before it's too late. Don't get me wrong - I may not agree with Mr. LaRouche, but I swore an oath as a member of the military some forty-odd years ago to protect and defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. So, until the Constitution is completely shredded, I will defend the rights of people like Lyndon LaRouche to voice his opinions even if I don't agree with the man or his message.

I mentioned nothing regarding their right to protest. I did however say their method of comparing President Obama to Adolf Hitler was designed soley to create hatred - an effective tactic Nazi Germany used against Jews. Regardless if Mr. LaRouche is responsible for orchestrating these types of protests, the fact remains it was designed to do nothing more than stir economic, political and quite possibly racial bias. I agree with you, their message was vile. Further I'm not advocating censorship. But should sensible, rational people consider such tactics as valid and worthy of consideration? Hardly.
