Vista Drive light show a week away

AUBURN — Work setting up a Christmas light show on Auburn's Vista Drive continues but Dr. Jamie Loggins said it will still be a week before he's ready to light it.

Jose Leiva/Sun Journal

Val Nelson of Vista Drive, Auburn, mother of Jamie Loggins, sets up a Charlie Brown Nativity scene on Monday. The Loggins said they have had a lot of help from friends for the light show to go on early next week.

Loggins and neighbor Stephen Bang were busy setting up decorations on their front yards Monday.

"But we still have plenty of work to do," Loggins said.

The two neighbors have presented the show on their front lawns for the past few Decembers. They feature thousands of lights choreographed to holiday music broadcast on a low-power FM signal. People are invited to pull up to the curb, tune their car radio to the signal and enjoy the show.

Many have, prompting neighbors to complain to Loggins and to the city about traffic on their cul-de-sac.

Loggins has set up a Web site, www.auburnlights.com, and said he'll update it regularly with news about the lights and schedules.

You have missed the point.

You have missed the point. There are people who would argue that their concerns are much bigger than any traffic inconveniences. Whether it be about celebrating Christmas or whatever the event. So, we should stop whatever the event? Be it Christmas or whatever, so as to not be jerks to them.

Not to mention that emergency vehicles have tested the Vista lights congestion without incident for over 3 years now, for the millionth time, there is NO EMERGENCY VEHICLE ACCESS PROBLEM. In fact, there are those that live on Vista who claim to have no significant passage issue. The claims of the few on the street remain claims.

Those who go just to see the display, yes, they have a wait and congestion. Measures are in place and have been for many years for RESIDENTS and EMERGENCY VEHICLES to BYPASS THE CONGESTION.

Hope that clears things up.

I will conceed the emergency point then

I didn't know emergency vehicle tests had taken place. I will concede that point. Of course, I don't live there, so really, you only get internet points or something.

I don't have a problem with it, but

I don't have a problem with it, but if I lived there I would. And if the people putting on the show don't have everyone on the cul-de-sac on board with doing this, they are kinda being jerks for putting them through this.

Solstice's picture

Not everyone in L/A is "on

Not everyone in L/A is "on board" with celebrating Christmas at all. They will tell you that their lives and values are negatively impacted just as much and probably even more than those on Vista. Therefore, so we are not jerks to them, we should cancel the holiday all together then?

There is a difference between

There is a difference between celebrating Christmas and putting on a light show and in the process, creating a massive traffic jam/ safety hazard. Now, I don't care if he does it or not. I know to avoid the area, which isn't a big deal. However, if I lived there, I would not be happy.

Why?

My wife is 8 months pregnant. Imagine if I lived on that cul-de-sac? I would have to worry "What if my wife went into labor during the traffic jam". Now, if the doc has everyone's ok, so that this additional risk isn't being forced on anyone, than thats cool.

But, from the sounds of it, he doesn't. So the doc is not only inconveniencing them, but he's forcing a safety hazard on his neighbors to put this show on. Doesn't sound like the Christmas spirit to me, but what I see as the Christmas sprint really doesn't exist anymore. Christmas is now about light shows and decorations and stupid shows on television, and of course, shopping.

Honestly, if you think a light show is what Christmas is about, boy have you missed the point.

People Should Realize...

What a GIFT this truly is..The holidays are hard enough for many...If someone could drive by my house and get a smile or two, I would be forever grateful. The times we live in are horrible..We still have men in uniform fighting for our freedoms and there are some, her, in Auburn,ME bickering over a light show. I'm tired of hearing :what if you lived here?"...Then, I would live there...Yes..we all have our bad days...Might I have a bad day during this time period of lights?...Who knows....The children that benefit from this are endless...You hear giggles..and people ooohhinnnn and awwingggg....smiles...genuine smiles...and you get the same from our elderly community...So children and elderly; two of our most precious gems....and people really want to take this away from them?...Who knows what bestows for them at home...Now that the light show has been given the green light, some people are going after the orange sign; because it does not say "Local Traffic Only?"...Come on...Now, with all this publicity, I'm sure something is going to happen, negative, so the nay sayers can say "Told ya so"...if something bad does happens...I say to the Nay Sayers.."Are you happy now?"....If only people would put more time and effort in saving Great Falls, maybe THAT could be done...Bicker all you want..To some, I'm sure they just like hearing themselves talk...I, for one, will be visiting the light show, more than once I'm sure...there's so much to see..Happy Holidays...

For cripes sake

Nowhere on the sign does it

Nowhere on the sign does it read “local traffic only” – It simply reads ROAD CLOSED. If the Police Department would like to be clearer on the sign and not rely on a few big-mouth bloggers to spread their word, perhaps they should think about posting a more appropriate sign.

Or you could have attended

Or you could have attended the past 3 years of resident meetings that detailed that plan in full, to include the provision for residents to pass, just like residents may turn left onto Vista from Park.

What a bunch of negative nellies!

It's Christmas - stop bah humbugging this apparently fabulous light show...can't wait to go see it!

You are either not a resident

You are either not a resident of the neighborhood or bent upon creating controversy. As you have been informed before on this very forum, that "road block" is specifically for residents. As a resident, you are allowed to pass. That is part of the many years of working with the police dept. and neighbors to alleviate inconvenience.

It seems that what you flat out REFUSE to do, is hear the facts.

Where's Ya Christmas Spirit?

It is Christmas, the season of joy...I realize it may be frustrating with the traffic flow, but God it is only for a very short time...be MERRY,Your lives could be so much worse...if all you got to handle is a little inconvenience, you ought to feel lucky

I noticed the "Road Closed"

I noticed the "Road Closed" sign sitting at the corner of Park and Lake, ready to be put up at a moments notice... As a resident of the neighborhood I flat out REFUSE to waste my time/gas to detor around that section of the road.

This means whoever lives around there has a week to get home, and stay there till the good Dr. is done obstructing traffic for a two mile radius.

Christmas is just ONE BIG

Christmas is just ONE BIG INCONVENIENCE, "I" should be able to go to the mall and buy a pair of jeans without having to fight the crowds of "Gift Givers" at Macy's getting in my way, Some lady standing in front of the Calvin Klein Jeans on her stupid cell phone apparently getting the pant size of everyone in her family!! Or the Grocery store "I" go in to just grab a steak and salad, Oh My god I get stuck behind some guy with half a basket of groceries in the 10 items or less lane 10 Items D bag!! I am the most important person on the planet, what I want, where I'm going and what I need is the only thing that matters. No one has the right to slow me down, get in my way or inconvenience me, for their silly little Holiday nonsense!!!
