For those people who do not wish to call a Christmas tree what it is (a "Christmas" tree), it would be polite to allow other people to enjoy the holiday that is important to them and their faith.
The holiday is a Christian holiday and the images connected to it should be spoken of using their given names. I am Catholic and I do not have a problem naming the religious symbols of other faiths by their correct names, such as the menorah as opposed to candle-holder or candelabrum. To do so would be insulting and disrespectful.
Are people so stuck on politically correct speech that we are becoming like those in the Middle East — fighting over religious beliefs?
I'm sorry if saying "Merry Christmas" offends some people. It is sad that they think Christians are cramming our faith down their throats.
It is wishing good tidings, joy and happiness to others, no matter what their religion is, because that is what the message is all about. No matter what faith a person is, be it Jewish, Muslim or New-Age paganism. For Christians, it is the message from our God.
Even if others do not have any faith or belief, are they so negative that they cannot accept the sentiment?
Maybe if we expressed our faith in a more loving and positive manner, or if we were more positive in our thinking, this country would not be in such disarray.
Nancy Ingerson, Lewiston
Merry Christmas
To all that have other relgions and you are certainly entitled to them. Would your religious beliefs be stronger if I could no longer enjoy or share in mine? I don't think my God would want me to ask you to give up yours. Dec. 25th is the day Jesus was born. Deal with it. I think wishing someone a happy or merry day is wonderful whatever day it is. Merry Thursday to you. We aren't giving up any more of our freedoms.

Christians don't get respect because they don't show respect beginning with the holidays. Christ was not born in December. The only reason you all celebrate it in December is to usurp the pagan winter holiday the same way you usurp the pagan symbols. If you want respect you have to start by showing respect and so far that hasn't happened.

You are right Pirate, Christians wont change, they will keep trying to force their beliefs on everyone else. They will also keep expecting that everyone already believes the same as they do and expecting them to act as Christians and be confused, freaked out and offended when they don't. Christians will keep doing whatever they want all week, then going to church, ask for forgiveness expecting to have it all washed away by the blood of their Christ, while they are planning the next weeks succession of "sins" for which they will go to church and ask forgiveness at the end of the week all the while expecting all the non-christians to turn the other cheek or look the other way. On December 25th, three months off from their Christ's birthday, they will celebrate his birthday. This is the Christ who they believe suffered terribly for each and every one of their sins, the same sins they are planning as I write and they read this, which they know to be sins, which they plan to commit and then go to church and ask for an expect to automatically get forgiveness for all the while they are planning the next weeks batch. It really does make perfect sense doesn't it? God's son came to earth in human form to suffer terribly for each and every sin past, present and future. As a Christian, all you got to do is commit the sin for which he will be punished terribly, ask for forgiveness and go out and commit more sins deliberately for Christ to be punished for. Isn't that the basis for the whipping boy? You are right Pirate, Christians wont change.

Nancy, if you are serious about calling things by their correct name i.e. menorah, not candlabrum, how about starting by forgetting the "Christmas Tree" and calling it by its correct name "Yule Tree." Your "Christmas Tree" is one more example of the theft of the pagan just as the the Christians attempt to steal the pagan holiday Yule and to do so, you Christians went so far as to change the date of birth of your Christ by three months. Every single one of your Christian holidays marks the theft of a pagan holiday right down to the catholic Ennunciation of Mary! All Saints, Christmas, Easter and so on are all thefts of pagan holidays from the date to the intent. Your very religion is founded on paganism which predates your's by thousands of years. So have a little respect and call it a Yule Tree and ditch the Merry Christmas for Happy Yule or Solstice if you must Happy Hollidays; but please leave Christ out of it you are missing his birthday by three months.

Would you like to respond? Login or create a new account. You'll need to verify your account before you can respond. So was Christ born in December? Probably not......
There is much discussion about when the birth of Jesus actually occured, though according to many scholars it was not, in fact, in December. That stable would have been full of sheep and animals in December - the shepherds wouldn't be grazing their flocks at night. There are plenty of links out there to it - just google it. Here's one - there are many, many others: http://biblelight.net/sukkoth.htm
So why are we celebrating Christ's birth at this time of year, anyway??
To make a long story short, when the Roman Christians had gained enough power and influence in the 5th Century to make Christianity the official religion - they had to win over the remaining pagans.
And what was the major pagan holiday? Saturnalia; which was celebrated on December 25th in the Julian calendar. This riot of drink, lust, and merriment eventually went on for a week:
http://penelope.uchicago.edu/~grout/encyclopaedia_romana/calendar/saturn...
"The Saturnalia was the most popular holiday of the Roman year. Catullus (XIV) describes it as "the best of days," and Seneca complains that the "whole mob has let itself go in pleasures" (Epistles, XVIII.3). Pliny the Younger writes that he retired to his room while the rest of the household celebrated (Epistles, II.17.24). It was an occasion for celebration, visits to friends, and the presentation of gifts, particularly wax candles (cerei), perhaps to signify the returning light after the solstice, and sigillaria. Martial wrote Xenia and Apophoreta for the Saturnalia. Both were published in December and intended to accompany the "guest gifts" which were given at that time of year. Aulus Gellius relates in his Attic Nights that he and his Roman compatriots would gather at the baths in Athens, where they were studying, and pose difficult questions to one another on the ancient poets, a crown of laurel being dedicated to Saturn if no-one could answer them."
So it was a December Pagan Holiday 'appropriated' by we Christians for our own nefarious ends to build up the membership rolls.
We can wish Christ "Happy Birthday" any day we wish....

Would you like to respond? Login or create a new account. You'll need to verify your account before you can respond.Dec 25th was originally a pagan holiday, Solstice
The tree is the one symbol that unites almost all the northern European winter solstices. Live evergreen trees were often brought into homes during the harsh winters as a reminder to inhabitants that soon their crops would grow again. Evergreen boughs were sometimes carried as totems of good luck and were often present at weddings, representing fertility. The Druids used the tree as a religious symbol, holding their sacred ceremonies while surrounding and worshipping huge trees.
In 350, Pope Julius I declared that Christ’s birth would be celebrated on December 25. There is little doubt that he was trying to make it as painless as possible for pagan Romans (who remained a majority at that time) to convert to Christianity. The new religion went down a bit easier, knowing that their feasts would not be taken away from them.
Christmas (Christ-Mass) as we know it today, most historians agree, began in Germany, though Catholics and Lutherans still disagree about which church celebrated it first. The earliest record of an evergreen being decorated in a Christian celebration was in 1521 in the Alsace region of Germany. A prominent Lutheran minister of the day cried blasphemy: “Better that they should look to the true tree of life, Christ.”

The problem is that Christmas isn’t a Christian holiday.
It’s roots are in the Winter Solstice and a Roman Sun God holiday, just like the celebration of John the Baptist’s birth is the summer solstice. It’s a federally recognized holiday. So aside from how you treat December 25th, there are other people who see it differently than you do.
And where in Catholic teaching is the Christmas tree a symbol of your faith? I used to be Catholic, and I don’t remember hearing anything about a Christmas tree being part fot he faith.
How about this – Stop acting like Christmas is going to be banned. Let people enjoy December 25 however they choose, and maybe spend some of the energy your spending worrying about the “Attack on Christmas” instead on making the hholiday season better for everyone, regardless if they say “Merry Christmas”, “Happy Hanukkah”, “Happy Festivus” or even “Happy Holidays”

The winter solstice does indeed predate Christmas, as well as other pagan traditions. But that does not, nor will it ever keep Christmas from being a Christian holiday.
You are also correct in that a fir tree is not in and of itself a symbol of faith. It is, however, a symbol of Christmas and thus does for many represent an aspect of Christian faith.
You may be right that Christmas will never, EVER be banned. Because saying so would be like saying that public schools would stop putting up decorations for St. Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day or Easter. Ooops! That has happened already, hasn't it?

I say it's great that Christians hijacked a pagan holiday and turned it into a Christian holiday celebrating the birth of Jesus.
I wish that the local Christian churches would buy up the local drinking holes like The Blue Goose and Gippers and turned them into outreach centers for spreading the Gospel to alcoholics.
Same principle applies to Christmas. If Dec 25 was a pagan holiday, then I am proud that Christians hijacked and brought God into it.

I don't care who came first or whatnot. What I'm saying is that Christianity doesn't have the sole claim to December 25th. So instead of worrying about what kind of holiday greeting we use, let's just forget the BS for one second. I've seen this argument come up over and over and over. What it boils down to is this, the people arguing about it are always offended, not by what they are allowed to say but by what other people say. No one in my memory has ever banned, criminalized, or frowned upon any individuals from saying Merry Christmas instead of Happy Holidays, writing the word Christmas instead of the popular shortcut Xmas, decorating your house with religious symbols rather than santas, snowmen and plastic smurfs, or in any way celebrating for yourself in your own way. What the complainers are upset with is what others do, like town offices, or retail outlets, or tv commercials or newspaper article headlines. I'll say it the way I want to, and you can say it the way you want to. Simple as that.
