Wales Central School kindergarten teacher Eileen Ouellette cleans up her classroom at the end of the day on Wednesday. The 21-year veteran teacher will be sad to see the school close if that is what is decided, but she wants what is best for the students and their parents.

As the school day ended, two Wales School Department buses pulled up. Students climbed on for their ride home.

Wednesday seemed like a typical day, but these days aren't typical for the community.

In a few months, townspeople will be asked in a referendum whether they want to close the school and send students to Litchfield or keep it open and pay $208,000 more in property taxes per year.

Residents have until Saturday to comment at the Wales Town Office.

Shannon Pinard, who was picking up her 5-year-old, said she'll vote no. She wants the school to stay open.

“I went to school here," she said. "I've lived in Wales all my life. I wanted my kids to go to this school.” The school closing would be a huge loss to the community, she said. “We are a very close-knit town, Wales is. Everybody knows everybody. It's not like that when you go to Litchfield or Sabattus.”

Like other districts in Maine faced with shrinking enrollment and less money, Regional School Unit 4 (Sabattus, Wales and Litchfield) consolidated last year.

Each town had its own K-8 school. Now, the Wales K-8 school only holds grades K-2. Grades 3-5 attend Carrie Ricker School in Litchfield; grades 6-8 go to Oak Hill Middle School in Sabattus.

Recently, the RSU 4 Board of Directors voted to close the Wales school at the end of this school year.

“I think it's absurd,” said parent Sheri Bennett. “I just don't think there's any real need for it.” The school is too large for the remaining three grades, Bennett said.

Wales Central School, renovated in 1996, appears to be in good shape. It has a security system that allows staff to monitor who comes in, windows that let in lots of light, two floors complete with a full kitchen, cafeteria, gym, resource rooms, a library, a music room and five empty classrooms. The school's population of 60 pupils includes one kindergarten class, one first grade and one second grade.

Parent Peter Faucher called the board's vote “not as thought-out as it should have been. Some of the buildings they decided to keep open are in worse shape than this one.” Some people moved to Wales because of the school, he said. “It is small. It has a good student-teacher ratio.

Wales Selectman Paul Burgess, 69, attended the school as one of the original class. His siblings went there. “I put all my kids through there," he said. "I do not want to see it close. Every town should have a school in it.”

Burgess said he hated to see the town send its middle school students to Oak Hill Middle School in Sabattus.

“I understand it's an economic thing,” he said. "It will probably give the kids a better chance when they get to high school.”

It's different with younger children, he said.

“It's sad to truck our little children a long ways from home," he said. "They need to stay near home.”

Parent Kimberly O'Connell is leading a group working to keep the school open. The group has a Facebook page, “Vote to Save Wales Central School.”

Her husband, David O'Connell, said Wednesday he understands one school may have to close, but he had doubts about whether Wales Central is the right one, saying it may be in better physical shape than the Litchfield school.

“I'm hoping people on the board were being unbiased” when deciding which school should close, he said. Because of population, Wales is allowed two board members; Sabattus has four; and Litchfield, three.

“We're always outvoted,” O'Connell said.

He questioned the projected savings of $208,000 a year if the school is closed.

The district would save money by closing the school, but Wales residents wouldn't get a tax break, he said. The school would become the property of the town, which would have to maintain the building or sell it.

The two-level school, with its cafeteria and gym, is too big for most uses in Wales, which has a population of about 1,300, he said.

“Who's looking for a school to buy?”

Sad times

Let's face it, Sabattus and Litchfield have always looked down on Wales. This proves it. The school board from Sabattus and Litchfield are arrogant and could care less about Wales students. This isn't being done for the good of the students, this is being done because Sabattus and Litchfield want it that way. Wales building is in far better shape then one of the buildings in Litchfield that isn't up to code for safety. No security system? Ok, so anyone can just walk in there, great, makes me feel really safe as a parent letting my kids stay at a building that anyone can just walk into. And then there is the problem of no sprinkler system being in place for that school....but "it is the better school for our RSU" That is total crap!!! Face it, our kids will get the shaft from the teachers and all of the administration when it comes to programs and extra activities because our kids will be seen as outsiders. The school board for Sabattus and Litchfield has the attitude of "who cares what the kids or parents want, lets just do what we want!" Wait I just had a moment of dejavu....
And I don't think you can blame LePage for this since is was Balducci who was the "genius" who wanted the schools to consolidate. Just another one of his bad idea....like Dirigo Health plan.

Closing Wales Central School

If the parents want to keep the school, then by all means LET THEM PAY for THEIR children to go there. Remember the FREE million dollar gym, that was voted down 4 times that was somehow passed ?How about parents start paying tution to pay more of the cost of educating THEIR children, instead of forcing their neighbors. Wales taxes are some of the highest in the state, and you get nothing back !! Let the teachers take a pay cut, or freeze their wages like most of the taxpayers in Wales have done for years.

Huh?

Just what does voting for LePage have to do with this school closing? Really, Voisine, your thought process seems rather skewed.

don't you see the connection?

don't you see the connection? lepage has made it clear that he plans to slash school funding, among other things, to eliminate the sales and income tax. It will become quite apparent come April, if he does what he says he will do.

Welcome to Maine: Republicanland and Mississippi of the North

How many of the "country folk" who voted for LeBovine and Republicans are now angry at losing a school to a cost cutting measure? Isn't it tough when reality bisects things like massive tax cuts for the wealthy on the backs of the middle class? Hah ... go for those low "taxes," what's next, LePage is cutting Mainecare (sorry grandma!) and getting rid of Dirago (sorry working poor!). Welcome to Maine, the Mississippi of the North!

little extra tax=no big deal

Who cares about a little extra tax, sometimes you need to pull your head out, and realize that the children are suffering from this. The best educations are those that take place in small schools like this one. I did not go to school here, but I have visited it before, and it is a wonderful place. I have family in Wales, and if I one day decide to live in Wales, I would love to send my children to this school. Stop worrying about the "monetary savings" and start focusing on intellectual future of these children. Being cheap is not going to help anybody.

Wales Central School closing...

The real issue here is what it will cost the taxpayers of Wales to own a vacant school...this is what most of my fellow residents and taxpayers have not been made aware of. With all the "voodoo" math that we've seen about the savings to the RSU, no one seems to be able to come up with what it may cost to care for this building. The RSU should shoulder the cost of the abandonded property, not just dump it on the residents of Wales. If you stop and think about it, being able to just abandon a building when you think you're through with it a very simple, convenient way of reducing your budget. Think of the empty mills in Lewiston and what "owning" these properties has cost the residents there.
The building became the property of the RSU when the districts consolidated, then the costs of caring for the empty building belong to the RSU.

Than have to bus the kids to Sabattus all winter on icy roads and with gas at an all time high I think the school should stay open for the safety of the kids The school should have some fund raisers to help out anything is better than closeing that nice school Think safety first always

“I went to school here," she

“I went to school here," she said. "I've lived in Wales all my life. I wanted my kids to go to this school.” The school closing would be a huge loss to the community."

This is why Maine education costs are so expensive. These students could be combined with the Litchfield school and save considerable money over maintaining the redundancy in administration and special facilities costs such as cafeterias. This needs to continue to happen at the secondary level so that these expensive redundancies are eliminated which will also permit the expansion of course offerings. Get over this parochial mindset and you will see considerable savings in the costs of education. Otherwise you're either looking at increased costs and subsequent tax increases, or reduced offerings for students.
