Separate is not equal

Gay marriage foes in Maine have hired the public relations firm that led the successful Proposition 8 proposal to overturn same-sex marriage in California. The reversal of the Maine law would require the signatures of 55,000 registered voters to force a referendum.
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland is petition-gathering for a gay marriage referendum with volunteers and paid workers, and is allowing signature-gathering at churches.
Gay members of the community are facing the same bigotry that African Americans faced during the period of enforced integration of the South. I lived in Mississippi through the era of segregation and integration, and I heard the exact same poisonous rhetoric aimed at the blacks who wished to attend integrated schools but were told that separate could be equal. White preachers raved from the pulpits, quoting verses and declaring mix-race couples abominations.
The U.S. Constitution guarantees religious freedom, but it is also specific that religion is a preference and not a universal obligation and, by extension, that moral tenants of any religious cult are fine as a covenant among its members but should never be enacted as the policy of the government to discriminate against any minority.
The Supreme Court recognized that separate is not equal. The freedom to choose a partner to live with and love is a human rights issue, and the equality of that relationship is not something to be determined by any religious group or voted on in a referendum.
William Gilliland, Farmington

You are right gil. They

You are right gil. They follow in step with thier president who agrees that marriage is between one man and one woman. Funny how this president is never attacked for his views on this subject. The left wouldn't dare would they?

Barb, the President is a Liberal, Liberals lie, it's not their fault, it's what they do.

Liberals know that, so they understand when he says that marriage is between one man and one woman he's lying.

That is the reason he is not attacked on the homosexual marriage issue.

Let me repeat myself:

Ted Haggard: "homosexual activity, like adulterous relationships, is clearly con demned in the Scriptures."
--- Left his mega-church for Meth use and Male Prostitutes

Larry Craig: Instrumental in "Don't ask, don't tell"

Bob Allen: supporter of amending the state constitution to ban same-sex marriage and has opposed a bill to curb bullying of gay students

Glenn Murphy: advised Republican candidates to use gay marriage as a wedge issue to use gay marriage as a wedge issue
--- Murphy got a fellow Young Republican drunk the young man woke up to find Murphy Performing oral sex on him.

Conservatives lie.

Need I over-generalize more like you, Hulk?

Any more rhetoric you wish to have shot down?

"You can't arbitrarily

"You can't arbitrarily decide to change the eons long accepted definition of a word to suit your sexual preference."

Yes, you can.

To most people, words are man made unless you're one of those who base their entire life on faith rather than fact. And if you're a "faith" person, there is absolutely no opportunity to discuss it with you. You are "right" and everyone else is wrong.

Hulk's picture

"Yes, you can." This group

"Yes, you can."
This group of people known as Liberals/Progressives/Marxists/Socialists etc. do just that. So called Progressives changed their name to Liberals to get away from the reputation that they had created. Now that Liberal is a dirty word they think people have forgotten what evil the Progressive name stood for and are returning to that.

You can call a skunk whatever name you want but it still stinks.

Liberals lie, it's not their fault it's what they do.
If they told the truth about who they are and what they want they'd never achieve their goals.

Mmm. Right. WE are

Mmm. Right. WE are responsible for showing those who follow the christian rule-book that it is okay for humans of different colors to marry - a re-definition of the term.

But it is okay. We have won. You may win you petty little battles and hold it off for a few more years, but you have lost.

Tick tock, tick tock, eventually, just like inter-racial marriage became the law and now no one bats an eye, same sex marriage will be commonplace and you and yours will try to play it off that you did not try to use the christian rulebook to try and stop it.

Gil is good at throwing

Gil is good at throwing around words familiar to him: stupid, asinine, ludicrous. Many slaves were in favor of slavery at the time, just as many undocumented imigrants accept slave wages now. The vast majority of Americans opposed inter-racial marriage when it was legalized, just as they opposed segregation. The ERA did not pass state ratification. Most Americans were opposed to blacks and gays in the military. All, all of these concepts took time for Americans to understand and accept. Some never did and went to their deaths screaming that they were right. New ideas take time, and frightened people fight the unfamiliar. Over time, brave, thinking Americans accept new ideas such as caring for our elderly, respecting those with special needs, single parents adopting children, and yes, that people of the same sex have been loving each other since biblical times. When we get tired of hearing the Gil rants, we just turn up the music: "..the land of the free. And the home of the brave."

Wait, wait, GAYS are allowed

Wait, wait, GAYS are allowed in the military.

Guys are showering with gay men all the time.
Women are showering with lesbians all the time.

They just don't know it.

Ostriches - if they cover their eyes they can pretend homosexuality does not exist.

But that is okay ...

Laughable! Like you'd know

Laughable!
Like you'd know anything about freedom.
By being a flaming Liberal you tell the world that. Liberals are the most ant-freedom people I've ever encountered in my life.

"undocumented imigrants"(sic)?
That would be Illegal immigrants. Remember Liberals lie, it's not their fault, it's what they do.

"Homosexual activist Lewis (Lew) Alessio of Greene, Maine was recently announced by EqualityMaine to be the 2007 recipient of the Cameron Duncan Award. The annual award is the radical homosexual lobbying group’s "homosexual of the year" award."

"Less well known is Alessio’s recent past, where he competed, and was named 1st runner up, in a homosexual leather bondage fetishist contest in 2001 in New York City. Alessio placed 1st Runner Up in the homosexual leather bondage "New American Leatherman 2001" according to the homosexual leather bondage fetish website Leatherweb.com. Later that same year, Alessio "married" his homosexual partner."

So, just what position do you hold in the Gay Mafia? My guess would be Enforcer!

Well, at least it sounds like you're a fun date!

Nothing of the sort. I am

Nothing of the sort. I am saying that people can be hypocrites whether they be gay or straight, republican or democrat.

Trying to poison the well by making a statement about a person's winning a leather contest would be like trying to poison the well by saying Ex-Gov Palin is lessened for her being a beauty queen winner.

It is too bad you fail to see that.

The point is none of this

The point is none of this has anything to do with equality.

Being homosexual is a behavior not a race.

The field is already equal, men are allowed to marry women and women are allowed to marry men, regardless of sexual orientation. What's not equal about that?

I believe in freedom, I continually ask why anybody requires permission from any government entity to be "married".

Yet all you sheep keep arguing that we must use the force of government to make everybody accept your beliefs. Are you homosexuals so damaged and insecure that you need to force others to validate your life choices? I hope not and don't believe most are.

As I said this has nothing to do with equality for we already have that. This is about punishing "breeders" and eventually the churches, it's payback time!

When you start fighting for real freedom, removing government from all personal relationships then I'll stand by your side and join the fight.

Gil's picture

Instead of the 'separate but

Instead of the 'separate but equal" bs, why don't you call it for what it is - apples and oranges. Man + Woman = marriage. Man + Man, or Man + goat, or Man + Car does not equal marriage. If you want to have a civil union, fine. You can't arbitrarily decide to change the eons long accepted definition of a word to suit your sexual preference. And then to even attempt to link gay marriage with plight of blacks before the Civil Rights Act is beyond ludicrous, it's downright stupid. Ask a black person who lived through those times if the two are synonymous and I don't believe that you will like the answer. (http://www.blackamericatoday.com/article.cfm?ArticleID=296) Not to mention that blacks are overwhelmingly against gay marriage, 70% of blacks backed Prop 8 in CA. Gil; Please - tell me, do

Gil;

Please - tell me, do you know that you think that just because a majority believe something it is true.

Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world right now. When they have a majority, will they automatically be correct?

Miscengenists outnumbered progressives when they outlawed the inter-racial marriage laws.

Tell me also that you know that we redefine marriage regularly.

Originally marriage had nothing to do with love - you did not choose, your parents did, and it was for property rights.
Believers in the christian rule book fought against inter-racial marriage based on the book.

Your attempts are arguments are spurious at best.

Next?

Believing in something

Believing in something doesn't make it true whether a majority believe it or not.

Marriage is more than a word, it is an institution ordained by God, who created us male and female. Homosexuality is a behavior not a state of being.
