Local parents watch daughter win big in 'Hell's Kitchen'

All along, Nona Sivley said she cooks her heart out for her family.

Nona Sivley, of Atlanta, whose parents live in Gray and work in Auburn, won the eighth season of the cooking-based "Hell's Kitchen" starring Gordon Ramsay on Fox. The finale aired Wednesday night.

On Wednesday, she won the final round of the reality cooking show, "Hell's Kitchen," to land a job in Los Angeles and become the spokeswoman for a wine company.

Big-time.

Her family was watching, but like millions of other TV viewers, they had no idea that Nona won it all until the last seconds of the show.

"I saw it as everybody else saw it," said Kelly Ace, Nona's mother who lives in Gray. "She wasn't allowed to tell anybody. I found out that she won just now."

Kelly and her husband are from the South, but now they live here and work in Auburn. Nona, on the other hand, is probably going to be on the West Coast for a while.

In a riveting hour of "Hell's Kitchen" on Wednesday night, she out-cooked, out-served and out-classed her opponent, the odious and unpopular Russell.

Across the country, her mother was happy enough to be snuffling tears. But she was not altogether surprised.

Nona has always had that special something.

"She's awesome. She's a great girl," Kelly said. "She's my baby."

It was a long, tumultuous road to success. According to "Hell's Kitchen" notes:

"She's had three wins and has had personal victories as well, including identifying more ingredients correctly in one of Chef Ramsay's dishes. She could not, however, tell the difference between mashed celery root and mashed potatoes, which screwed up her service. She's been argumentative enough in the past that Ramsay booted her from the kitchen, but she's had some good relationships with the other contestants. Despite her lack of fine dining knowledge, she seems to have natural ability."

Kelly and the rest of Nona's family had to endure tense moments before the bliss Thursday night. There were missteps on Nona's team, including a chunk of halibut that would just not cook.

But Nona rallied her troops and got dinners served to VIP customers, including her husband and child.

"I want this so bad," she said to the camera. "My family is counting on me."

A moment later, normally grouchy host Gordon Ramsay announced Nona as the winner. The celebrations began, on the West Coast and on the East.

"We're so proud of her," Kelly said.

What is wrong with you people...

Here is a young girl who happens to be a good cook and won on a reality show for cooking...Why has this turned into an argument amongst some of you. No, she's not from Maine but she does have Maine ties...Give the girl a break...she did something very few have accomplished...

Yeah Nona! HAHAHAAAAA Russell!

I was both surprised and really happy that Nona won. Russell was very good but an egotistical, haughty, rude jerk. I'm so glad he lost. I know the show cuts and pastes comments to fit in certain situations but everyone hated this guy. I think I'm way more happy that he lost. Now he can go on with his threats and slap everybody lol. He even blamed his team at the end for his loss and not himself at all. He's not even half a man to not give credit to Nona and be a good sport.

what if's picture

Thanks Sandman

for staying on subject and rising above the fray. And congrats, Nona.

Yeah Nona!

My husband and I watched this season and had picked her from the beginning as a finalist. We're so glad she won. Like you stated, she ran her kitchen with class and got the results she wanted from her team, without berating anyone and threatening to "blacklist" them... You go Nona.

fedupmainer? Did you have

fedupmainer? Did you have her "picked from the beginning as a finalist" because was that good? Or just because she was from Maine?

If she had been from Ohio, would you still have picked her?

At any rate, congradulations Nona!

Where does it say she's from

Where does it say she's from Maine? From what I've read the article states that the parents are southerners who moved up to Maine for a job.

tron's picture

fatandhappy, you're the one

fatandhappy, you're the one who suggested that someone support her because she came from Maine, instead of her expertise. When, in fact, she's from Atlanta Georgia, as are her parents, who happened to live in Maine because of their jobs. Of course, I expect you'd believe that to be a lie, since all you right wing wackos believe NOBODY comes to Maine for jobs, they all just leave.

Tron, try to smile

Tron, does it bother you when people like Nona and like me that move up here from the south and try to make Maine our home?

If they live here, then this is their home now, and you should be ashamed for your unwelcoming attitude.

Tron, if you pulled into my hometown in Arkansas with a UHaul and started moving in, I promise you the neighbors would come over right away and help. While the men were helping you unload, the women would be making you cakes pies and casseroles not only to welcome you, but to take the burden of worrying about meals off of you while you settle in.

Then, the "Welcome Wagon" will come to your house and bring you a friut basket with all kinds of coupons and local information.

Then, the local Pastors and Deacons from the local churches will show up and introduce themselves, see if they can help you with anything, then invite you to their church, or maybe to go fishing, or to a ballgame or cookout.

Why can't you be hospitable like that?

I think he was pointing out

I think he was pointing out the fallacy of your assertion to fedupmainer that she only liked Nona because Nona was a Mainer ... which, as Tron pointed out, is not accurate.

You're getting all defensive for nothing! Relax ....

fatandhappy's picture

Sorry Patty and Tron

I did word my original post wrongly and it changed the whole meaning of the point I was trying to make.

Ok, Tron, you were right...this time!!

What?!

Where in Tron's comment do you read that he is bothered that they moved up from the south? Wow! Some people....

fatandhappy's picture

Tron expresses that sentiment

Tron expresses that sentiment all the time. He is constantly telling people that aren't from maine to go home. He resents anyone from out of state
