Snowe to support Don't Ask, Don't Tell repeal

U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, says she's willing to support the repeal of the military's ban on openly gay service members.

U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, talks with a reporter on Capitol Hill in Washington on Monday, during a procedural vote on the tax-cut legislation.

In a prepared statement, Snowe said that she will vote for a new stand-alone bill co-sponsored by U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, that would eliminate the "don't ask, don't tell" policy. The policy, enacted in 1993, keeps gay and lesbian servicemen and servicewomen from serving openly in the military.

Snowe's announcement follows her vote against the repeal during last week's  surprise roll call vote in the U.S. Senate. At the time, Snowe said her opposition was based on procedural grounds because the repeal was included in the Defense Reauthorization bill.

Snowe's support comes with a condition that the Senate ratify the Bush-era tax cuts before taking up the "don't ask" law.

“After careful analysis of the comprehensive report compiled by the Department of Defense and thorough consideration of the testimony provided by the Secretary of Defense, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the service chiefs, I support repeal of the 'don’t ask, don’t tell' law," Snowe said.

"However, as was stated in the letter I signed along with all of my Republican colleagues to the majority leader on Dec. 1, we must first fund the government beyond Dec. 18, and prevent the largest tax increase in our nation’s history from affecting all Americans on New Year’s Day before addressing other legislation," she said.

Snowe and Collins have signed a letter pledging to block all business before the Senate unless the Bush tax cuts are extended. The pledge relates to legislative items.

U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., who co-sponsored the repeal with Collins, indicated that Snowe's support would give the bill the 60 votes it needs to pass to avoid a Republican filibuster.

Following the U.S. House of Representatives vote Wednesday to repeal "don't ask," Lieberman and Collins issued a joint statement urging the Senate to do the same.

Republican Sens. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Scott Brown of Massachusetts are the other GOP senators who have voiced support for the repeal. Like Snowe, Murkowski and Brown have said they will not vote for it until the Senate finishes work on both tax-cut legislation and the bill to fund the government.

Although Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nevada, has said he would bring the "don't ask" repeal to the floor before the end of the lame-duck Congress, it's unclear whether he'll have time to do so given the Senate's full agenda, which also includes ratification of the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty.

Republicans Want Dogma At Any Cost

Gil,

Each day you prove that you prefer nothing more than right wing dogma at any cost. There are places for people like you. The term "voluntary committal" comes to mind. However, you're a Republican so as such you're beyond redemption. If you were lucid in the first place you wouldn't be who you are.

Time for a new chapter..

As Lil stated, the law has been repealed.
There was one comment I had read by Richard Eubank, the current leader of VFW, he had stated that creation and enforcement of the new policies would be far more difficult to enforce than any of the appeal advocates ever imagined.
I think that is a good point, just because it has been repealed, does not mean that with the flourish of Obama's pen, all the problems associated with it's repeal will just vanish.
It will be interesting to watch as this all unfolds.

Turncoat RINO's

Collins, and Snowe voted with the Dems for cloture. I have said for years that these two traitors from our state need to go. Hopefully the Tea Party can find a viable candidate to replace them in their next election. They constantly show that they are only interested in pandering to the lib voting bloc in Maine and do not hold the interests of the country as their guiding conscience.

gay

being gay is not a choice - its biologically and genetically the way that it is. Most people who are troubled by gay people have been most likely brainwashed by their conservative churches and narrow minded upbringing . What a parent teaches is most often passed down from ones parents and accepted as truth -plain and simple... its like the fox channel- look at all the people who accept pretty much everything they say. Its easy to sit in front of a tv and accept what the media spills out than to research the truth --by looking at views from all sides.. people who have hate agendas don't usually want to hear views outside their own --- its called being narrow minded . its ok to have a view but back it up with facts...

fatandhappy's picture

how about some facts from you

Back up your statement that homosexuality is genetic and biological. I believe it is purely a mental desire, nothing more and nothing less.

What about pedophiles? Is their attraction for children genetic? If not, what makes it different from homosexuality?

I will be anxiously awaiting your facts/proof that homosexuality is genetic.

I could tell

you the links to this study or that website.. but when it comes down to it your going to believe what you believe. period.
what about heterosexual pedophiles ? do they exist....?

Can you say "RINO"?

She is unbelievable. I hope my fellow Conservative Republicans remember this come the next election. We need REAL Republicans in office, not these wishy washy representatives who bend over backwards to try to please everyone.

They're willing to put their

They're willing to put their life up for our country! What's your problem? Oh yes, Republicans don't believe in equal rights, I forgot about that.

fatandhappy's picture

Equal rights? Bologney

Blacks got equal rights because they deserved it. They were discriminated against because of a physical trait.

Women deserved equal rights because they did nothing to warrant discrimination either, They were also discriminated against because of a physical trait.

Homosexuals have no physical trait that attracts discrimination. Homosexuals only have a nasty, gutter trash sexual attraction to the same sex. And that is not grounds for discrimination.

Homosexuals already have the same rights as everyone else, but now they want "special rights" for participating in an immoral behavior,

They have no right to claim discriminaion just because most of the moral world despises the despicable sexual crimes against nature that they commit.

By the way, for all the homosexuals reading this.....If you don't like my opinion of you, then improve yourself.

I doubt you even know anyone

I doubt you even know anyone who is gay. They are not hitting on someone who is straight, they seek out their own and in most cases already have a relationship. There are already thousands in the military who are gay and doing a great job at their post. Why can't they be "free" just because people like you don't approve? Why can't they share stories about their significant others and families like everyone else? Who made you boss of them? They are putting their lives on the line to protect you fatandhappy. Yes, you! As far as same sex marriage goes, I saw this posted on Facebook and thought I'd share with you: "Let me get this straight - Larry King is getting his 8th divorce, Elizabeth Taylor is possibly getting married for a 9th time, Britney Spears had a 55 hour marriage. Jesse James and Tiger Woods are tapping EVERYTHING, yet the idea of same-sex marriage is going to destroy the institution of marriage? Really?"

fatandhappy's picture

Same sex marriage

As far as same sex marriage goes....yes there are alot of people that have no respect for marriage and marry and divorce several times.

But, for the many, many people that have spent their whole life with one spouse, the idea of men marrying men is a joke, and an insult to the instution of marriage.

In fact, it is just ridiculous.

Do you really think that Elizabeth Taylor's crazy life is a good reason to justify homosexual marriage?

fatandhappy's picture

You are right about one thing

The only gay person I know is my sister in law, and she is disgusting. Her gayness is the centerpoint of her life. It consumes her. She goes to bed thinking about it and she wakes up thinking about it. She is seriously disturbed. If she brings her girlfriend to a family function, we won't attend. If she comes alone we will attend. The reason is that I have a 5 year old that I feel is too young to deal with questions like "Daddy, why is Donna's husband a girl?"

And yes, you are right, other than her i don't know any gay people. I know of plenty of them, but I choose not to associate with them.

As far as the military goes. Men and women have always been housed seperately because of the sexual attraction between the sexes. What makes it any different if the attraction is between the same sex? I would not shower in front of women, and I think showering in front of homosexual men is the same thing.

I have spent many nights in a foxhole with a buddy in very close quarters. I would not feel comfortable sharing that with a man that may have sexual desires towards me.

And, gays are demoralizing to the manliness of the military. They definately mar the image of a tough fighting soldier.

But ok, let them serve openly, but house them seperately and issue them pink uniforms.
