The most commented stories of 2010

In the last of our "top Web stories of 2010" series, we present to you the most commented stories of the year.

As might be expected, a few opinion pieces and letters make this list.

10. Our view: Mosque may have outgrown Bartlett Street location

This editorial, a reaction to the news story also on this list, asked if it was the best idea for the city to permit a mosque with a 98-person occupancy and an area with only 17 parking spaces. The understanding was that most people would walk to attend the mosque, but neighbors complained about cars parked on their property.

9. Sun Journal makes changes to rules for online commenting

After a lot of careful thought and several newsroom discussions, we decided to limit online comments to only those who were willing to display their real first and last names to the world to see.

8. Letter: Wake up to media lies

In September, George Jones of Otisfield wrote to the Sun Journal, warning readers that "there are hundreds of stories out there — good and bad — that need to be told. The media need to wake up."

The letter struck a chord with SunJournal.com commenters, who took sides both pro- and against Fox News, which was named in the letter.

7. Our view: Distinctions lost in debate over Manhattan mosque

In previous years, national stories often entered our top 10 most viewed stories list, but this year was not the case.  On the most commented list, though, the topic of mosques in New York City near the cite of the World Trade Center towers hit close to home for our readers.

6. Levesque: License suspension, driving record "irrelevant" to congressional bid

A month before elections, in October, we pulled Jason Levesque's driving record, which revealed that the Auburn resident and Republican candidate for state representative had a suspended license after incurring too many points. Readers weighed in on whether or not the suspension would impact his ability to be a qualified congressman.

5. Letter: No more pseudonyms

Ed McCaffrey wrote to support our new anti-pseudonym policy at the Sun Journal that will go into effect Feb. 1.  Those who rejected the policy (and those who support it) came out in full force on Ed's letter.

4. Students: Police overreacted to party

We went to the Bates campus to attend a rally to protest the way the Lewiston Police Department responded to the semester's-end party where 11 students were arrested. Lines were quickly drawn in the comments between those in the Bates community and many of our regular commenters.

3. Mosque parking raises heat at meeting

Councilors asked Bartlett Street neighbors to talk to each other, hoping to head off bigger problems smoldering between members of a mosque and nearby property owners.

2. Burning desire: A Lewiston mother struggles with her fire-setting 7-year-old

One of the most commented stories of the year was that of Raequann Lunt, a 7-year-old boy who compulsively sets fires, and his family, who struggled to find a way to pay for his treatment.

The story, which ran in July, accumulated 170 comments from people around the community who weighed in on the struggles that Raequann's mother Laura Foster faced. Many of the commenters disagreed with our decision to run the Raequann's story with his full name and his mother's full name on the front page of the Sunday paper.

1. Bates party results in injuries, arrests

This story's comments, like the other story about the Bates party in this list, quickly became a dispute over the college students' and the Lewiston Police Department's actions. We had dozens of new user registrations that day in order to comment on this story, which totalled 276 comments.

I don't often agree with

I don't often agree with Tron, and even more rarely respond to his comments,as he is entitled to his opinion, but I very much agree with him this time. hopefully, this comment section will stay on topic, and not become a spiteful name-calling forum.

And you did it AGAIN

Is it your new year's resolution to ruin that boy's life?

While there may be fewer

While there may be fewer posts, and I'm not convinced of that inevitability, the forum will be far better than it is now. Gone will be the hateful commentators who will only post if they can hide their identities. There will be a livelier discussion on the issues, than attacks on personalities. Can't wait until the doomsayers are proven wrong. They will NOT be missed!!

I can't believe this one

So tron, are you saying that it is ok to be "hateful" and post personal attacks as long as the poster's real identity is known?

You post more hateful personal attacks, and call people names more than ANY poster on here, and it seems hypocritical to me for you to fuss at others when you are the main offender.

Unless, you believe you have a right to be hateful and call names just because your real name is in your profile?

Your problem is you identify

Your problem is you identify with my 'attacks.' I 'attack' ideas, not people. I do not try and bully my points, unlike you. If you post racist ideas, I call you out on it. If your posts are mean spirited, then I point it out. If I think your ideas are illogical or hurtful, I'm there. And what do I get in return? Personal attacks, such as my sexuality, my status in life, my size and many other things which has no bearing my opinions. I don't publish your address, your phone number, your marriage status or kids. I don't think because your wealthy that you opinions are worthless, unlike you and your cohorts who believe that since I collect Social Security Disablity, that I'm on "welfare," AND I don't have valid points. And the only reason you dare to such attacks is because you're anonymous. Trust me, you will not be missed.

fatandhappy's picture

Why does it bother you?

Why does it bother you that people have posted your address and phone number? After all, YOU are the one that put your name on your profile, and any body that has had a computer for 2 days or more knows how to Google your name.

You say that you dont' want anonymity on the forum, but yet you get furious when you feel that your privacy is violated.

Tron, if you post personal information on the internet then people ARE going to violate your privacy. If you are willing to accept those violations, fine, but if you are going to get upset then you need to remove the personal information.

It is very hypocritical to insist on true identities and then complain when your identity is abused.

If you are going to post your name, then you might as well post everything else, because the rest of your information is just a few clicks away.

You can't have it both ways Tron.

Again you deflect from the

Again you deflect from the real issue, by making something up then attacking. I never said that it bothered me that you posts my info. NEVER!! What bothers me is the REASON you post it, to try and intimidate and bully me, so I wouldn't attack you IDEAS. If I was really concern about my info, I would not be listed in the phone book. And even if I knew you identity, I wouldn't try and find any more information about you than what you've posted. It's obvious, we're never going to be pals, and I have respect for your privacy not to publish your information. But not you, you insist on bullying, which is why you remain anonymous. You're a two faced chameleon, who projects an image to the public but hides a deep dark side. You will not be missed.

From the Dark Side

You are right about one thing Tron, we will never be pals. But even though i don't like you, I would still help you any way i could if you needed it.

In 2011?

This time next year they will be reporting that all of the "most commented" stories will have came between 1/1 and 1/31.

Tired's picture

how exciting. yawn.

Too bad, with their new commenting policy, everything that makes this an exciting forum will be gone. No more insider information. No more name calling. No more forum fighting. Oh my, it's going to be an exciting 2011.
