LePage family bonds survive troubling upbringing in Lewiston

When Paul LePage is sworn into office today as Maine's governor, Maurice "Moe" LePage will be there, a witness to his big brother's remarkable escape from an impoverished and abusive childhood.

In this Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2010 photo Gov.-elect Paul LePage pauses during a news conference where he announced cabinet appointments at the State House in Augusta.

"I will be the proudest person there because of what we've been through," said Moe LePage, a tile floor installer who lives and works in Deltona, Fla. "Trust me on that."

Moe LePage, 56, grew up with Paul LePage and their 15 brothers and sisters in a four-room house on Lisbon Street in Lewiston.

Their only hot water came from a pot on the wood stove in the kitchen. Their toilet was an outhouse for much of their childhood. Their parents, Teresa and Gerard LePage, slept downstairs on couches while the children slept in the two bedrooms upstairs, four or five to a bed.

But those material hardships, Moe LePage said, were nothing compared to the terror that sprang from their father's violent temper. A heavy drinker, he once slammed Moe's head against a table so hard that he was taken to the hospital for stitches.

His father also beat Paul. Moe LePage recalls that when Paul was 11, his father sent him to the hospital with a broken nose. Paul ran away from home and never came back.

Moe LePage said he stayed behind and tried to protect his brothers and sisters from his father. He said his mother, a good woman, wasn't strong enough to stand up to her husband. He said she often asked her children to kneel with her and recite the rosary in French.

Moe LePage said he wouldn't go to bed at night until he was sure his father was asleep, because his father -- when he was angry and drunk -- would sometimes stuff newspapers into a slipper and douse it with kerosene. He would put the slipper under the family's old television, light it with a match and then leave the house.

"My father was an evil, evil man," Moe LePage said.

Moe LePage has remained close to Paul, the oldest boy, but he has lost track of most of his other siblings -- three of whom have died. (Prior reports have indicated that Paul LePage had 17 siblings; that count included a half-brother from his father's previous relationship, according to Moe LePage.)

A brother, Roland LePage, 60, and a sister, Diane Saindon, 55, also live in central Florida. Though they have stayed close to Paul, they can't travel to Maine because of serious health issues.

Saindon, who suffers from liver failure, is a former nurses aide. She said she will call her brother Paul today to congratulate him.

She said her older brother's success is due to his determination and work ethic, character traits that were evident in him when he was a teenager.

There often wasn't enough food in the LePage household because their father was too busy drinking, she said.

After Paul ran away and was taken in by another family, he worked at various odd jobs, such as shining shoes and delivering the local newspapers, the Lewiston Daily Sun and the Evening Journal. He would use some of the money to buy food, and for his brothers and sisters.

The family lived in a French-speaking section of Lewiston called Little Canada, and the children didn't learned to speak English until they were teenagers. Paul was admitted to Husson College only after he was allowed to take an achievement test in French. He eventually received a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Maine.

Paul was the only one of his siblings to complete college.

"He always wanted to go to college," said Roland LePage. "That was his dream. And he did it."

Paul's niece Nikki Saindon said his success encouraged her to move to California and realize an ambition of becoming a filmmaker.

Saindon, 36, who lives in San Francisco, owns a small production company that does special effects for films and television commercials.

"Looking at what he went through as a child inspired me to pursue my dreams," she said.

Paul LePage's mother died two years ago; his father died in 2005. Both died in Florida.

Before his father died, Moe LePage went to another sister's house in Florida to move his father out because a hurricane was approaching the area.

He hadn't seen him for several years and was startled by what he found.

"He was a big, giant man in my mind," he said. "But here was a tiny, frail, little old man. I picked him up like a little baby in my arms."

Moe LePage cared for his father for several months, until his father died from cancer. Moe said he hoped that his father would one day tell him why he beat his own children. His father never spoke of it.

New Governor

Well, we'll see if this one is like the last one or not.
But we all will see if they make cuts if the disabled or elderly will be the first as always.
The State of Maine has already shown very clear that Maine does not care about the disabled or elderly over the past few years as seen in newspapers too.

Gil's picture

2 days later

still waiting on one of those 'verified' members so obsessed with facts to back up his allegation. Have to assume that he is lying, and made it up. That's two confirmed liars, and one racist. Or should I say 'verified' liars, and one verified racist.

Gil's picture

Please show us

where the elderly or disabled have been thrown under the bus in this state, financially. And don't just ramble off some program that was cut, show us how it effected them and how many. And show how it was first above all other cuts. And then remember who has been in charge of the purse strings in this state.

Gil's picture

Fifteen hours later.....

still waiting. Good thing that another lib got 'verified' so we know they are dealing with the truth.

Gil the SJ will be nothing

Gil the SJ will be nothing but liberals, mostly cause they love to hear themselves whine while looking at themselves on the soapbox, just ask veratis.

Gil's picture

Amazing lib response

If this had been a Dem that had won with the same history there would be none of these callous remarks. The whole story is of a man who overcame staggering odds to become the leader of a state and all the spiteful libs can do is spew hatred. If that is the so-called compassion of the left, give me the right any day. A very inspiring story by the way, regardless of political affiliation.

Imagine how inspiring it would be had Paul LePage been

Black, Gil.

Then we all could flaunt a "Worst Governor Ever" sign at the Inaugeration to mimic your good taste.

Working Mainer's picture

"Black"? whats that? Only a

"Black"? whats that? Only a lib would play the race card like this. We on the right vote for the man, not the mans skin... regardless of what you fools thing, or want to believe...

Gil's picture

Pay no attention

to the resident racist. ( I guess that he believes that it's ok for him to be a racist) Like all libs, if you disagree with the messiah's policies, he will claim you must be a racist. They play the race card because they can't defend his socialistic power grab agenda. What they fail to mention is that he is also half white, which makes him the 44th white president also.

I asked you many times

what 'Race' you were talking about, Gil. You never answered. Cat have your tongue???

Now you're chattier than Chatty Cathy. I must have struck a nerve.

Gil never takes responsibility for describing the 'Race'

he's referring to when he accuses others of 'Racism'

Intellectual Coward, Gil?? Or haven't got a Case??

How' about both.

Gil's picture

Are you really that

f'ing stupid. You use a racial slur to make your point. Therefore, you outed yourself as a racist. Asking the insanely stupid question of "what race" over and over shows how amazingly obtuse and moronic your way of thinking actually is. The fact that you can throw out a phrase like "Wetback" and then ask "what race" is just mind bogglingly stupid. That's why I wrote you off as not worth responding to. I have given you your own direct quote, let others make up their mind as to whether you are a racist. And I have offered to meet you anytime, anyplace, and to date you have not accepted. Let others decide who is the coward. Now, done with you little man.

Answer the Question - what Race??

There are a number of 'Races' - tell me which one? Or are you unable to do so?

I'm meeting you in a forum where one exchanges thoughts, ideas, and writings. What you're telling me is that you are so pitifully unprepared that you can only resort to violence.

But we are still in Puerto Rico, Hawaii, and jusr recently left the Phillipines. How about American Samoa?? We invaded Mexico and stole Arizona, New Mexico, California, Wyoming, etc ... Which they are now reclaiming, Wetback by Wetback.....

A direct quote from the racist himself

Hmm, no response?

Funny how the libs run when hit with the truth.

pauls health plan

In one of the debates he said one of his employees at mardens would not take a raise for the last 5 years because she would lose her Maine care and have no health insurance wow 5 years and he did nothing but not give the raise that’s the guy in charge of the state now maybe that will be his health care plan make all companies pay low enough wages so every body’s on Maine care

citygirl's picture

kaos are you aware that

kaos are you aware that people are allowed to refuse raises? i am sooo positive your comment is out of context.

Working Mainer's picture

Wake up!

If youd have been actually paying attention to what LePage said and not what his opponents were saying you'd know his plan is to get folks off welfare by adjusting the system so the more you make the less welfare you get, incrementally, until you no longer get any welfare... the current system pays out alot and then suddenly stops... there is little "slope", just a "cliff" and that keeps folks on the dole... just the way the Dems like it.... LePage plans to make the system encourage those to earn more, not avoid earning more... simple... straightforward, and completely infuriating to the Dems and Liberals who want to take from the "rich" (a term used that keeps reaching lower and lower...)

Jane's picture

Good Grief

Is it always so dang necessary to rip apart someone who's succeeded?? Or is it asking too much of you complainers to back off if only for today??

Working Mainer's picture

its an (R) thing... nothing else matters

If LePage were (D) he'd be lauded as a hero and we'd have streets libraries and bridges being named after him already...

The man is just barely in office! The Liberals cannot accept anything (R)... doesnt matter who the man is, his plan, his history or his record... the (R) thing infuriates them..

what priveleged families don't realize

...is how prevalent the abuse was among working-class families. My great-grandmother was murdered by her alcoholic husband, who had abused her and their children from day one. Later, one of his daughters accused him of incest and was shunned by the rest of the family because it got reported in the newspaper.

But is he going to use his experience to work on domestic abuse, child welfare or substance abuse issues? Nope. Gonna use it to crush anyone who hasn't been able to overcome it as well as he has, while giving our tax dollars to his precious little girl for a cushy state job and free room and board. We're also going to feed and house his mother-in-law while we are at it.

compassionate tea bagger

What a wonderful story of non English speaking immigrants who lived with other like minded non English speaking immigrants in Little Canada with lots and lots and lots of beautiful children. I am thrilled to find a Governor with that background who will embrace the plight of our Somali immigrants who are experiencing many of the same issues. Allowed to take tests in French? That's amazing....Great story Sun Journal!

Scotty_O's picture

Holly Crap...

Nobody told me that the Bates Mills was hiring again! Your comparison to French Canadians holds water like a uterus on birthing day.

Working Mainer's picture

Wake up Call to the Lefties

"teabagger"?? "Plight of the Somalis"?? Your comments speak much to your hatred and mindnumbing blindness to reality. My French relatives moved to Maine to WORK. My grandparents never took one penny in welfare and worked their butts off to live (and earn) their way to the American Dream. My Grandfather started off in Lewiston at the bottom, and not speaking one word of english fed his family of 6 on his EARNINGS and bought his own apartment building within 10 years and his own brand new house within 20 years. And you have the gall to compare Somalis to Franco Americans? Theyve been here for 10 years now and refuse to do anything to get off welfare. They dont need to work so why work? Mainers are tired of paying for lazy people, be they white yellow black or green. But moving to Maine to earn a living and enjoy Maine's unique beauty and way of life is not the same as moving to Maine to enjoy its welfare and unlimited handouts.

The Democrats plan is and has been welfare, welfare and more welfare. Tax the workers and give their money to the poor to make them "unpoor"... Eventually the earners will be poor and choose to stop working so they, too, can be "unpoor" the cycle is insane. The Dems have followed this foolish path for 40 years. It MUST stop. Its so crazy, that entire groups of refugees (nearing 10 thousand soon) and others, are choosing to relocate to Maine for the sole purpose of it's welfare. NO OTHER REASON. Never has been, never will be, unless things change.

LePage has a plan to help Somalis and everyone else who is abusing the system. Their welfare will have a lifetime cap. When it runs out, if you are able bodied and can speak English, GET A JOB. If you cant, LEAVE. 10 years on welfare and what do the Somalis have to show for it? Nothing except free cars, free food, free housing and free internet, all on our tab.

LePage earned his way to where he is by hard work, perseverence and drive. He understand compassion and understand what a handout is. The man was helped by many, but never took advantage of them. HUGE HUGE point.

ConservaMom's picture

Can you provide a link to

Can you provide a link to back up your claim that those involved with the Tea Party gave themselves that derogatory name? No link = no proof = lie. And I'm still waiting on the link Gil has requested where you claim Governor LePage (I just LOVE typing that) said he was going to do away with the sales tax and income tax. I'm not going to hold my breath waiting.

Gil's picture

Once again

Dan makes an allegation that everyone knows is a lie. Dan, please show proof that the party ever used the term "teabagger" to describe themselves. Just like all of your other useless posts filled with lies, I am sure you won't come up with proof on this one either. That makes you a serial liar, or a perfect liberal. Same thing
