Thank Republicans?

Thomas F. Shields letter (Dec. 30), spinning claims we owe congressional Republicans a debt of gratitude for holding the line on taxes, is the worst bit of misinformation imaginable. All we owe Republicans is the “debt” to which I have no gratitude for.

Under the Democratic plan, no individual making under $250,000 would have seen an increase in taxes — period. End of story. Republicans held hostage that plan until the president agreed to extend the tax breaks for the wealthiest 1 percent of Americans for two years. The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office estimates that it could add $3.5 trillion to the deficit. Thanks for that.

The Republican party wants the public to think they are "deficit hawks" and "fiscal conservatives." The truth is they demand tax breaks for the wealthy without replacing the lost tax revenue, or try to offset the loss by cutting spending on the poor and elderly. Republicans and the Bush Administration increased the federal deficit by $4.9 trillion. Thanks for that.

Trickle-down economics does not work. The wealthy and large companies, historically, put their tax savings in the bank. It does not spur hiring or spending. It grows wealth. Nothing more.

Congressional earmarks make up less than 1 percent of the federal budget.

Employment improves as a natural part of recovery, not because of Republicans.

I am a small business owner. I provide jobs. Like many others, due to the economy, I am facing the loss of my home.

Thanks, Republicans.

David, your common sense letter certainly brought out the best and the worst in people. It's unfortunate some people can't join into an honest discussion about this subject without getting just plain nasty. Pity the source.

I believe all people share a great capicity to solve our world's problems. While it can be said my letter brought out both the best and worst in people, both are driven by the passion we all share. If we could all take that passion and channel it, most of our problems would not be Dems or Republicans, Black and White. They would be solved. I pity only those who are too afraid to publically take a stand in this world. Cowards with excuses. It is easy to talk tough, spew false facts or personally attack someone from the shadows. It takes great courage to look a man (or woman) in the eyes and say "I disagree".

Alternative Site Being Discussed

Ben there is discussion among some who have left over the name and other issues of starting a new site and online paper. Would you be interested in posting/contributing to that? It would be annonymous like this used to be and absolutely no name calling i.e. bigot, pervert, pedophile, gay, right wing wacko, wingnut. . . if you get my drift. We are looking to build a site that is higher calliber with serious discussion, sharing of information, opinions, etc. Would you be interested? That goes for the rest of the folks that are no longer posting or will be leaving shortly and of course you too pirate and you would be more than welcome to bring along the parot.

I would be interested armymom. Although I don't contribute as often as I would like to I would very much like to be able to share my thoughts with others without putting myself or my family in any potential harm because of my views or opinions. Isn't that why we vote in private on the 1st Tuesday in November? I have teenagers who don't need to be harrassed because of their mother's opinion. Look at what Sarah Palin's poor girls have had to endure. No thanks. I'll stay anonymous - even if it means I leave the Sun Journal.

In your eyes she deserves all the crap she got because of who her mother is. YOUR response is EXACTLY why I won't go public with my information. My kids don't deserve to be ostracized by our community because of MY beliefs. You just proved my point that your lowness knows no bounds.

Getting knocked up and having the Wasilla Hillbillies for parents are the two things that come to my mind.....

One she could help - and the other she didn't have a whole helluva lot of control over - and I sincerely pity her for that.

ConservaMom's picture

As a bookstore owner I would

As a bookstore owner I would hope your reading comprehension skills would be better than they are. I never said Bristol Palin was ostracized. I said I do not want MY children ostracized by OUR community for comments or opinions voiced by ME. However, Bristol Palin and now her 16-year-old sister Willow, (according to reports that the "comedienne" Kathy Griffin intends to bring Willow Palin down), have been ridiculed, mocked and judged (Bristol is NOT the only unwed teenage mother in the world) by the so-called "tolerant party" for the simple fact they are children of the "Wasilla Hillbillies". Well...my children didn't have a whole lot of control who their parents were either, and this proud, conservative, "Maine Hick Mom" refuses to let her children be taunted by the "tolerant" people like yourself. You should be ashamed of yourself. A grown man (I'm assuming here, I know) using CHILDREN to make yourself feel somehow superior. YOU are no better than the "Wasilla Hillbillies"...in fact, I would dare to guess the "Wasilla Hillbillies" are far better human beings with more compassion and love in their hearts than you have in your little finger.

ConservaMom's picture

Yes, Veritas, I do know how

Yes, Veritas, I do know how to read. I am well aware that Bristol is an adult...but what about her 16-year-old sister Willow? And what about the Palin's youngest son, Trig? And what does the fact that she's an adult have to do with the price of tea in China??? Fact of the matter is...Bristol, Willow, Piper, Trip, Track, my son, my daughter, your children (if God so blessed you with any) had NO choice in the matter on who their parents would be, yet they are the most vulnerable people to attack when you disagree with their parents. That's like kicking your dog when the cat yacked on your brand new carpeting.

And I live in the real world...not some perfect Uptopia you seem to think we live in. It's called reality. Children, even adult children, tend to be put in the crosshairs by the public for things they have no control over. The left (and some on the right) have done it with Sarah Palin's children - why should I think for 1 second my children would be the exception?

Yep, Bristol Palin found herself pregnant out of wedlock with some loser of a biological father for her child. She's not the first and she most definitely won't be the last - but it doesn't make her a bad person - unless, of course, your're a judgmental old man who thinks his crap don't stink. Get over yourself.

I could post pictures of the Obama's and their 2 beautiful daughters during the campaign (and since) when they have been paraded in front of the cameras for whatever kind of political pull Daddy-O might have gotten out of it, but the FACT remains the same - the KIDS have NO CONTROL over their parents thoughts, actions, voiced opinions or anything else for that matter. Honestly Veritas, you make this so easy - YOU keep pulling the KIDS into this picture and then try to tell me MY kids would not be held accountable for MY thoughts and beliefs? Hahahahahahaha!!! You just keep proving it over and over and over again. YOU (and those like you) are the reason I REFUSE to disclose my name, address or ANYTHING ELSE on these forums. David, I'm so sorry to hear bad news from another victim of this recession. I have just read 31 comments, which is typical when Dr. Thomas Shield's name and his opinion is mentioned. Most were foolish and a few were good dialog. Like you I owned a small business. A commercial flooring business that catered to the manufactured housing industry in the Oxford area. In 2007 I had seven major accounts and was grossing 70 to 80k annually and employed one person. In 2008 six of these accounts had closed and the 7th decided to keep the work in house to save money. I thank God I hit retirement age in 2008. So many, including Dr Shields,

"The Republicans elected in

"The Republicans elected in November haven't even been seated in congress, yet you apparently have definitive insight into their actions?"

Okay-let's look at some recent actions by the Republicans. In 1994 we had Newt Gingrich and the first Republican majority in Congress in over 40 years and what did they do to help the country? They torpedoed the Clinton health care bill and that was about it. Newt and his Contract on America went down in flames and the Republicans lost their majority status in the 1996 and 1998 elections. Then we had a Republican President selected by the Supreme Court in 2000. What did he do? He cut taxes for the wealthy in 2001 and 2003. He also took us into two costly, unfunded wars, one of which was a war of hubris and based on poor information (lies?) which resulted in the death of thousands of US soldiers and Iraqi civilians and the maiming of thousands more. In addition, those delightful little Bush tax "cuts" and his out-of-control spending led us into the greatest recession since the Great Depression while doing nothing to stem the hemorraghing. After the 2008 elections when the Republicans were soundly trounced, they decided that they were going to be obstructionist and hog-tie the president and Congress, somewhat successfully. They brought nothing to the health care table while leading the charge at some of the loudest debates based on false information and outright lies. Now you ask about insights of future actions? I think we already know exactly what to expect. If you expect the Republicans to act any different than they have in the past, then I have a bridge in New York I'd like to sell you.

Steve Bulger formerly mainexile's picture
verified

If, as you say,

the past is sufficiently demonstrative of future intentions by conservatives and there is no real effort by the right to cut spending, reduce the deficit and lower the public debt, then I will admit that I was wrong and beg forgiveness for my beliefs from all the liberals, progressives and leftists on this forum. Until that time, I shall hold firm to my contention that the times they are a-changin'. Of course, if I am proven correct, I expect that all of you naysayers will acknowledge that the batteries in your crystal ball were dead. And you might just want to hang onto that bridge for the time being.

Please explain to me how

Please explain to me how someone making more than $250,000 has a negative impact on a person making less than that. It doesn't, but the democrats have been quite adept at dividing the country into faceless factions with class envy and promoting the concept of diversity. We are all Americans so stop segmenting our society. This country is broke so even cutting out the earmarks would be a good start. We have plenty of money going to the feds, it isn't an issue of revenue it is a spending problem. Both political parties are driving up the debt, but with the public's addiction to largess from the treasury we also have ourselves to blame for the debt. We need to return to the self-reliant attitude that helped maked this the greatest country in the world and the reason so many people want to come here. What we need is an economic triage, eliminate spending on that which only helps a few people and focus on the greater common good. Trickle down economics have worked everytime they are tried, in the early 60's with Kennedy, the 80's with reagan and a few years ago with Bush, if taxes are cut for everyone then there is more revenue going into the fed.
Mr. Marquis, if you are a small business owner and facing the loss of your home, you are doing it wrong. You either need a smaller house, less employees, learn how to cut expenses, or stop voting for the people that will destroy your ability to run a business.
Now give me the response to my first sentence.

veritas's picture

Is the economy a 'Zero Sum Game?'

Is wealth finite or infinite?

In the event that the Government can simply keep printing as much $$$ as it wishes to, then allowing a person to make as much money as he can has no effect on others. If money is finite - then allowing a person to use his wealth to the advantage of making more wealth does adversely affect those who have less money - they will have be requitred to spend more and probably earn less. Basic capitalism and economics. Capitalism is based upon greed and competition - to the winner goes the spoils and riches. Basic Adam Smith - 'Wealth of Nations"

And that - deimos - is how letting the rich get richer (without regulation) hinders the less economically advantaged.

veritas's picture
verified

Class Envy?? How about defining this red herring???

You banter this term about - now you define it and what you mean when you use it.

CynicalCitizen's picture

please explain to me

where you get the numbers to support this claim: "and a few years ago with Bush, if taxes are cut for everyone then there is more revenue going into the fed."

Here are gross federal revenue numbers from the federal budgets 2001-2009, adjusted for inflation to constant 2001 dollars, expressed in trillions of dollars:

2001: 1.99
2002: 1.82
2003: 1.72
2004: 1.76
2005: 1.95
2006: 2.11
2007: 2.21
2008: 2.13
2009: 1.79

Before claiming that cutting tax rates (not the same thing as cutting taxes, btw) always increases revenue, take a look at the theory supporting that claim, and the caveats on its use.

Steve Bulger formerly mainexile's picture

The Republicans elected in November haven't even been seated in congress, yet you apparently have definitive insight into their actions? While I'm not disputing your claim...yet...I would like to see empirical data to support your theory.

Steve Bulger formerly mainexile's picture

With all due respect

your source is an organization whose stated goal includes: "Our goals are to close the growing wealth divide, to change the rules that tilt tax benefits increasingly toward the wealthy, to spotlight the role of race in economic inequality, and to serve as a forum where different races, different cultures, and people with varying degrees of wealth can come together to work for economic justice." Their vision includes, "We envision an economy where everyone contributes to society with their labor and everyone benefits from society's financial growth." This all sounds suspiciously similar to that familiar quotation, "From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs."
The "data" provided in the cited source attempt to justify the author's position that tax cuts do not stimulate economic growth. However, it must be agreed that there are many factors influencing economic growth with tax rates being only one. Each generation, each decade, each budget cycle has external stimuli that more greatly affect GDP, median wage, hourly wage and all other indices than tax rates. For example, in the 1974-1976 time frame, the Arab oil embargo caused the price of oil and gasoline to skyrocket when supplies were scarce (if you're old enough to remember odd/even rationing, you know what I mean) That single factor resulted in more economic turmoil than any other at that time. In November 1980, Ronald Reagan was elected president. In the two years following, GDP, median income and hourly wage all increased significantly, and unemployment dropped. In 1988, Bush the elder was elected and pushed additional tax rate reductions to their lowest levels in modern history. It was during his presidency that all leading economic indices dropped indicating that, perhaps, his cuts had gone too far. As the Clinton administration began its reign in 1993, the top tax rate was increased and all indicators went positive with the initial exception of hourly wage scales. Unfortunately, he was also the proponent of an initiative called "The National Homeownership Strategy: Partners in the American Dream”. That well-intentioned but strategically unsound fiasco, which contributed greatly to the housing bubble and bust, combined with the dot-com bubble and bust, the 9/11 tradegy and the misdirected war in Iraq during GWB's presidency to negate any influence over economic indicators by tax rates.
The bottom line is that one cannot take a factor such as tax rates and extrapolate their fluctuations to the economy as a whole. But even a cursory examination of the tables provided in your citation reveal no justification of the author's thesis and, in fact, suggest quite the opposite. Look again.

verified

Respectfully

I submit to you that no matter how many studies, evidence and facts I put in front of you, if you disagree you then the facts don't matter. Wgich allows you to dorm an opinion that is not based on clear and coherent information. So to coin a phrase " you are entitled to your own opinion but not your own facts. If you read the study then you also read that for a short time under Regabomis, the was some initial growth until further tax breaks under him and HW Bush had a negative impact. Don't just pick the parts of something you like to form an opion. choose the facr.

Steve Bulger formerly mainexile's picture
verified

And I submit to you that

I read and analyzed the statistics presented in your citation, and the trends-versus-timelines do not support the author's contention. These are not my facts - they are yours. I haven't done anything more than examine data you, yourself, offered as evidence of a theory that cannot be supported by your material. It doesn't take a Wharton School economist to look at the statistical data and realize that the author is "cherry-picking" events from decades-old material in order to prove his thesis. Furthermore, the data do not include most of the 2000-2010 decade during which the greatest financial upheaval in our country's modern history occurred.
And regardless of the opinion of me held by some on this forum, there are others who will admit that while I lean to the right, I am far from being a conservative extremist. N'est pas, Ron?

tron's picture

you are correct, Mr. Bulger

you are correct, Mr. Bulger is one of those right wing wacko who only accepts 'facts' that support his postition and anything else is fraudulent. So if it doesn't appear in FOX News or organizations like the Maine Heritage Policy Center, which consistantly provides proven false information, then is isn't real. The sad part is for the next four years, the MHPC is going to have a substancial influence on the operation of the state, which can only create more stagnation and misery for the common folk. Every business

is affected by the economy. My industry I am in is affected as much as any in the country. I can't think of a single business that is tied solely to the economy. There is always the element of customer service, building a better mousetrap, having a better location, developing new innovations etc etc etc . You can always find someone able to prosper despite the economy.

Sounds like someone is looking for someone to blame. He's looking in the wrong direction. The more conservative minded legislators we elect, the better things will become for businesses. I hope the letter writer's business is able to survive to see the benefits of the LePage team in Maine and the new congress in Washington.

On another note, my first paragraph is the reason you will never see the green "verified" badge on my posts. I operate a business that is in an industry that analysts projected to decline by 15% or more in 2010. My business had a double digit sales and profit increase, the biggest single year increase that we've had in a decade. I've heard that my largest competitor in the region is considering downsizing, or ceasing operations here to concentrate on other regions. Those that work for me understand that we are not to discuss politics or religion with potential or existing clients under any circumstances. I would not jeopardize a single dollar of revenue just so I can speak my piece here. How many of you have contributed to moving me to a higher tax bracket? Since the verification process began I've seen 2 names I recognize from our customer/client/patient/'whoever may use our products/services' list. I wonder who they are? Many small contractors are facing the wrath of it as I am. we participate in the economy but its demise is hardly our fault. When the banks give out questionable loans, then packaged them, sell them to ivestors as safe investments and then bet against them on the other end. I call that not my fault wouldn't you? The blame lies elsewhere.

I have long called to task both Republicans and Democrats. Because I am liberal and lean toward the Dems does not give me license to ignore what is wrong with them. But facts are what they are. It was G.W. Bush who put 2 wars on a credit card, gave taxbreaks to the rich without replacing the lost revenue. And now you tell me the same political party following the same ideology will pull us out? Please.....

People do not hire me or choose not to hire me because of my politics. Those who would, turn out to be the worst type of customer to deal with (experience in the best teacher). I am hired by my reputation as a contractor, my level of skill and of coarse the price of the job.

I do not hide in the shadows so no one will know my opinions. That is a cowardly approach leaving little or no sign of integrity. I define Integrity as doing the right thing no matter what the outcome is. America need people who can stand up and disagree without being disagreeable. Wgo will face the same facts, share our differing opinion and strive to reach consensus. If you refuse the participate after Feb. 1st because you are afraid to have people know who you are and how you stand in this contry it is you right but a very cowardly approach. Good Luck With that ;o)

Personally, if you provided a service I needed and did so well, I couldn't care less what your political views are. I wonder if you would do the same if you patronized someone who you disagreed with politically? Probably not, so that makes you a BIG hypocrit!

Assume much?

"Probably not, so that makes you a BIG hypocrit!"

The leader of the green badge crowd chimes with a BIG ASSumption.

Understand this Dan-O. People usually have lots of choices when choosing where they spend their money. Many times there is very little to choose from between competitors. All things being equal, they patronize the people or person they like better. I make sure that my personality does not create an obstacle that I have to overcome. I'm genuine and I let them see the real me, I just avoid hot topics that set people off, which are the only interesting topics here.

The downside? I'm busy and I don't have much time to spend commenting on the SJ site. All day. First guy in the morning almost every day. Several times a day on the livelier topics. In a matter of minutes at any time of the day when someone responds to me. You know, like you.

Get a life.

Although the Pirate often agrees with VoiceOreason on most matters, he must take exception to Tron being referenced as "the leader of the green badge crowd". Nothing could be further removed from fact. It is doubtful that he could lead a flock of hungry sheep to pasture. For what it's worth, the green badge means only one thing; that a handful of people at the Sun Journal happen to know my phone number and my zip code. Really not that big a deal. I'm still the same Pirate, and the parrot, whom some believe to be imagined, is still alive and squawking. (am I allowed to say squawking? It has the word "squaw" in it.) AARRGHH!!!

Could it be because

your grasp of economics is tenuous at best? Or perhaps the whole letter is a bit of your own envy over some being better at business? Not saying, just guessing.

Republicans are operated on

Republicans are operated on at birth and given myopic eyesight and an inability to face the truth. Some say it's genetic, but I'm not sold on that theory yet.

Once more

Dan has shown us the nice, civil discourse one can expect from the Green badged. Along with operating solely on facts. Hope that date with Rex works out for you, you seem lonely Dan.
