Reassess the problem

According to the Obama administration, "50 million Americans do not have health insurance." That is 50 million out of a population of 300 million, or 16.6 percent of the population. For those Americans with no health insurance, that is a crisis — a personal crisis, not a national crisis.

Administration officials insist that the health care system is broken and only a major overhaul can fix it. Actually, the U.S. does not, nor has it ever, had a health care system. There is a free-market system in which consumers can purchase whatever medical care they choose. However, health insurance companies are not allowed to operate in the free-market venue. In most cases, people can purchase health insurance only from companies that are allowed to operate in that state. That eliminates competition, which limits choice and drives up insurance premiums. If such barriers were removed, individuals would reap the benefit of lower prices and a wider variety of insurance options.

Removing interstate barriers is only one of many "fixes" that could be applied to the health insurance "crisis." Destroying the free market system, which created the best medical care in the world, is not the way to go. Providing insurance for 16.6 percent of our fellow citizens can be accomplished without the heavy hand of the federal government.

Maine's congressional delegation must reassess the problem and come up with a solution that better reflects American values and traditions.

excuse me but I work in

excuse me but I work in health care and I have spoken to people that live in great britian and canada that are not happy with their health care. How do you expect we will cover 50million more people with the same amount of nurses and doctors? you don't think you will have to wait? Check out how long it takes to get a cat scan or an MRI in canada? Also where is the money coming to pay for all this? If it is so bad here why do people come here from all around the world? Don't tell me that is a lie as I have worked at Mayo clinic and we got people from all over the world. We took care of them with our so called crummy health care system. hmmm? Do you acutally think that private insurance can compete with a public option? This is one step of many for our trip down the road to socialism.

Barb; Now Mayo Clinic

Barb;

Now Mayo Clinic advertises itself as the: "Largest integrated medical center in the world, providing comprehensive diagnosis and treatment in virtually all medical and surgical specialties." - and that they have treat more than 350,000 patients a year.

Does that sound like they're just picking up the slack from Canada - or they're a bit more specialized than that....???

Just for giggles and grins - how many patients is your physicians' practice getting down here in Maine from Canada because they can't get service up there? Pretty big crush of of patients? You come in Monday morning and you've got 30-40 cars out there in the lot with Canadian licenses?

I make it a point to ask

I make it a point to ask every Canadian who comes into my shop if they would rather have the American model of health care, or keep their Canadian system.

Without exception - the response has been to keep their own system. The Several Canadian Doctors who've also popped up here would rather practice in Canada.

And the problem with 'Socialized' medicine, Barb? It serves most civilized countries quite well - many better than our 'protection racket' insurance company system.

Where will the people from

Where will the people from Canada go for their health care when they can't wait in line any longer and are about to die?It won't be here. And while your at all you liberals out there explain to me while after 9 months we don't have any new job creation? Could it be your president is a failure and his stimulus isn't stimulating? Why is unemployment at 9.4%? Why is Obama an anti-capatialist? Why is he trying to shove this public option down our throats instead of coming up with ways to fix the system. There should be some sort of tort reform. That will never happen because Obama is in the back pocket of the trial lawyers and he owes them. I am happy with my insurance and don't want to give it up.

Stimulus is working, Wall St

Stimulus is working, Wall St Journal, today: "Economists say the money out the door -- combined with the expectation of additional funds flowing soon -- is fueling growth above where it would have been without any government action.
Many forecasters say stimulus spending is adding two to three percentage points to economic growth in the second and third quarters, when measured at an annual rate. The impact in the second quarter, calculated by analyzing how the extra funds flowing into the economy boost consumption, investment and spending, helped slow the rate of decline and will lay the groundwork for positive growth in the third quarter -- something that seemed almost implausible just a few months ago. Some economists say the 1% contraction in the second quarter would have been far worse, possibly as much as 3.2%, if not for the stimulus.

For the third quarter, economists at Goldman Sachs & Co. predict the U.S. economy will grow by 3.3%. "Without that extra stimulus, we would be somewhere around zero," said Jan Hatzius, chief U.S. economist for Goldman."

Taxing the last I recall

Taxing the last I recall taxation rates were much lower, intelligence operations are more precise, and anti-terrorism experts in those countries are better trained. Scotty those nations have a standing military which is much stronger then you can imagine. Add onto that nearly all countries rely heavily on Mossad intelligence from Israel for support in counter-terrorism and discovering up and comers in those outfits it easily makes sense of those forces to have international stations and bases in positions as well. As I recall we also now receive specialized intelligence trainers from Germany who train in monitoring terrorist networks internally and externally be it Muslim or Neo-Nazi and infiltrating those groups. What you say is a splintering and unorganized thought of how intelligence and military operations are conducted. Also much of the armed forces training is regulated and in accordance with several other trainings internationally for men and women in the armed forces.

Taxation rates also apply and supply themselves because the traditional costs of exporting businesses for American products to foreign nations. Do you have any true numbers on the taxation rates other then blogs? We do not rely on blogs really in the educated world we rely on facts.

Tron, your absolutley right

Tron, your absolutley right that we don't have the best health care (accodring to a 2000 W.H.O census) but how many countries on the W.H.O's list have a military our size. Now lets say even England or France is invaded? Who ya gonna call? Those countries tax the living crap out of their people (read any blog on the matter), imagine if they had to properly defend themselves too?

That's a good one. Americans

That's a good one. Americans need to subsidize the health care systems in Europe? Our military needs to be ready and able to defend England or France from invasion so they can have universal health care?

Liar!!! We do not have the

Liar!!! We do not have the best medical care in the world. This oft repeated lie is popular but untrue. Perhaps the SJ would do a public service by screening all letters for accuracy.

Now, there is not one single insurance carrier prohibited from doing business in Maine. NONE! They choose not to do business here, because they would have to be approved by our Superintendent of Insurance and they don't want to abide by the laws here in this state. The laws are in place to make certain that when you compare policies, you're comparing the same comparable policies, so you really know what you're getting when you buy. Insurance companies are notorious for putting small print limiting what they will do. In automobile insurance you're out some money. In medical insurance you could die.
