AUGUSTA — Organizers of an annual anti-abortion rally and march say they are invigorated that Maine has a governor who is publicly opposed to abortion.

Participants in an annual anti-abortion rally gather outside of the state house Saturday in Augusta for the "Hands Around the Capitol" rally. The rally is held each year to recognize and mourn the anniversary of the Supreme Court's Roe vs. Wade decision.

The Hands Around the Capitol rally in Augusta is held each year to recognize and mourn the anniversary of the Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision, which legalized abortion 38 years ago.

At least several hundred people attended Saturday's event in the freezing weather, which included a Mass, a prayer service, a rally and a march before culminating with a human chain around the Capitol building. Many carried "Stop Abortion" signs. A bell on the grounds was tolled.

Teresa McCann-Tumidajski said her group, the Maine Right to Life Committee, is happy to have a governor in its corner. Republican Gov. Paul LePage attended the event but did not speak.

McCann-Tumidajski said the governor's daughter, Lauren LePage, spoke at her group's annual convention last fall.

"There's a buoyancy in our step and we are hopeful," she said.

LePage's predecessor, two-term Democrat John Baldacci, was in favor of abortion rights.

What 'side' we choose to be

What 'side' we choose to be on is a very personal one. It saddens me that still, to this day, it has become so political & hostile. Some actually vote for a politician based souly on what 'side' they are on on this issue alone. That is just not right. I am not afraid to say I am 'Pro Choice'...but..could I personally have an abortion? I am not sure. Thankfully I am past the age to have to make the choice. But, I am glad that the 'choice' was there in my youth. I know women who have made that choice. It was the right one for them. I also know women who did not make the choice, and gave their child up. It was the right choice for them. I also know women who made the choice to keep their child, and the child suffered. Madeleine said it beautifully......read what she said about TAKING CARE of them once they are here. All the 'pro life' people tell others to keep their child, but you never see them offering to help adopt these children, or help the mother out financially, emotionaly..they just tell them they are sinners if they abort, then they become 'welfare mothers' and get condemed for that also. They can't win. Birth control DOES FAIL sometimes. The commercials that they play over and over saying women abort 1, 2 even 3 or 4 times is hog wash. Show us the proof of that! I have worked in the same field for over 30 years with 'low income' people. Not one woman, in all those years, has ever had more than 1 abortion. And I can count, on just both hands, how many, in those 30+ years, have had that 1 and only one.
This issue should be OUT of the political and religious arena, and put back into the individual person life.
I will make it political right now though, and say this IS a 'special interest' group..just as the 'pro choice' people are. Our so called Gov. needs to smarten up, button his lip, learn some RESPECT for the people of Maine..or he will soon find himself impeached!!

Governor LePage...

Wouldn't this be a "Special Interest Group?"

So I guess the governor picks

So I guess the governor picks and chooses his "Special Interest groups".

The special interest group

in this case is unborn babies.

They are invigorated...and they have hands too...

Great news!

You are Christ's Hands

Christ has no body now on earth but yours,
no hands but yours,
no feet but yours,
Yours are the eyes through which to look out
Christ's compassion to the world
Yours are the feet with which he is to go about
doing good;
Yours are the hands with which he is to bless others now.

Saint Teresa of Avila

Saving the lives of the unborn is doing just as Saint Teresa of Avila mentioned...yet, that is not where she was suggesting it ends. Once you have saved these babies your invigorated hands and feet will be needed. Your eyes to look Christ's compassion upon the single mothers and these little ones will be needed. I hope you all plan to follow through in helping these families.

Everyone has something they can contribute...every pair of hands can make a difference. Sometimes it is as easy as providing a ride or just a simple, "I'm going to the grocery store do you need anything?". Perhaps it's allowing one of these young mothers to use your washer and dryer to do a load of laundry. Every hand can be useful when it comes to rocking a child while Mom catches up on some school work...The saving of an unborn childs life is very important...making sure mother and child have the support and love they need afterwards is equally important.

I am glad to see the Governor taking a stand for the unborn, yet, what does he plan to do for these people afterwards? Cutting help to dependent children and their mothers is a far cry from saving a child. All of you holding hands and attending Mass...all that are mourning and rallying, I would hope you follow through and fight to make sure these mothers are given every opportunity possible to succeed in raising these children. We don't save any child when we afford them hunger, lack of medical attention, and homelessness. If your fighting to save lives...make sure you all follow through on providing the help these mothers and these little ones will need.

Give the gift of yourself, all mothers could use another set of hands :) Be the voice that fights to make sure this people are given the opportunity to succeed.
