WATERVILLE, Maine (AP) — Maine Gov. Paul LePage has changed his plans and attended a Martin Luther King Jr. Day breakfast just days after saying critics of his decision to skip other holiday weekend events could "kiss my butt."
LePage attended the breakfast in Waterville on Monday, just as he had done for several years as the city's mayor before being elected governor.
His appearance was scheduled after he responded Friday to critics of his decision not to attend the state NAACP's annual holiday celebrations. LePage cited scheduling conflicts, but his "kiss my butt" comment drew harsh criticism from state and national leaders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
LePage didn't speak publicly at Monday's event, but in an interview spoke of the importance of King's contributions.

If this was a serious issue (and it isn't) Why doesn't LSJ PRINT the positions of what the NAACP has or has not supported in Maine? Instead, you characterize NAACP as the poor poor victims of that vile Governor. Who DID the NAACP Maine Support for governor? Were they like LSJ and got proven wrong? Are you going to PRINT the positions of this DNC shill or not? Words, tone, emphasis, intent. The Maine NAACP (nicely) accused our Governor of a "discouraging pattern." Which in elite terms, means gee he might be a racist. Don't you think he got USED to these words games, during the election? Did you, accept the invitation to have lunch with his son? Will you PUT that interview on the front page? Paul went to a breakfast he has always attended. If Baldacci or Cutler had an adopted Jamaican Son, I can promise dear posters, that LSJ would have made a series of it, week after week.
Sorry, thanks for letting me post, I think Paul should keep it up, stand strong, and tell them more often.

What do you mean, "unmasked"? He's verified. This is as unmasked as it gets. Check his profile, it tells you who he is. So what?
Don't have to agree with him, but he has the right to be here so long as he watches what he types. Same applies to all of us.

On Saturday LePage participated in a pro-life event and was apparently quite able to find time in his busy schedule to show solidarity toward a cause that the majority of Maine disagrees with him on. Mr. 38% governor needs to do ass other governors have who've been elected by submajorities and work with, not against, the other side.

Of course he is "all for special interests he agrees with"
If you are pro-abortion do you support pro-life groups?
If you are for gun control do you join the NRA?
If you are for traditional marriage do you join GLAAD, GLSEN or NAMBLA?
If a liberal would have been elected it would be the same way. Except one thing, if a liberal would have gotten elected by 38% of the vote then none of you folks would be whining

But please tell me about this current discrimination and abuse of black people you keep talking about.
I honestly don't know where there exists any discrimination that is not already addressed by the law, or where it is currently practiced.
Will you please name the discrimination that you see and tell me how we could fix it? And do we need the NAACP to get it done?
Please tell me what you are talking about?

If you were on a plane, and they stopped it on the runway for a terror threat, and there were several white families with kids, and there was one Arab on the plane......who would you keep your eye on?
Racial profiling is a joke. If the cops are in a black neighborhood known as a "crack hood" and they see several yooung men wearing gang colors meeting on the street corner at 2am, then yes, they are probably up to no good.
Mostly, the "profiling" consists of judging a situation by previous experiences.
I like dogs, but if I get bit by two or three pitbulls, then I am going to be on the lookout for pit bulls. Is that profiling? Maybe so, but there is no use bothering the poodles since they have never bitten me. I am watching for the pit bulls, especially the ones exhibiting a certain behavior. It makes sense to watch out for the threats.
Little Rock, which is close to my hometown, has been overrun by Crips and Bloods selling crack. There used to be at least one drive by killing every night between the gangs. The situation is still bad but the Little Rock Police have down an excellent job over the last 20 years to crack down on them, and slow down the killing at least. They could not have down this without agressive policing and checking out suspicious people. There were cries of "profiling", but nonetheless, the war is working and these dangerous criminals are getting taken off the street.
Me, I want the PD to check out suspicious persons in my neighborhood.

Advancement of Colored People is to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate race-based discrimination. That is what the NAACP is.
Part black and you don't think we need the NAACP? That sure makes me wonder? How many black ceo's do we have in USA?
Just that fact alone tells you why we need the NAACP. Black people in America have to make up for hundreds of years of discrimination. If you don't know it, you have a lot catching up to do, and sorry, discrimination is still here and holding you back. discrimination is just as natural as having kids around some families even today. And you say you are from Arkansas? Did you know that you "even today" would have a real problem surviving in most rural areas in Arkansas. They think part black is worse than all black you know?? Fact is, you go to Harrison Ar. and see how you do. A whole lot of those people think just like they did 100 years ago. You really should be very aware of this?? Now around the bigger cities, well they are like just about all big cities, but rural Arkansas has not changed to much, and that is most of the State you know? Also, if I ever get discriminated against, I will go to the NAACP, as they don't care if I was white, only if there was discrimination...And I'm glad they are there....

Tron,
You are verified but you still need to follow the rules of engagement and that includes no name calling. Fat and Happy should not be calling names either.
This is a warning to both of you. Chat about the issues, disagree as you will, but use facts and reason to support your point and not insults against each other. The conversation on race and the governor's comments is a touchy one so you need to tread carefully.
There's a large number of people who feel he was speaking his mind and good for him -- another large number of people found the comment tasteless and insensitive. That said if you want to talk about it here don't be tasteless and insensitive.
Today is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day -- he said "We must learn to live together as brothers or we shall perish together as fools."
I think there's a lot to that.
Thanks,
Scott

This is why we still need the NAACP. Anyone from Arkansas should be very aware of this.
YouTube.com/watch?v=ARj_6SbjsXA Nothing much has changed in most of Arkansas. Things have changed around the cities, big time in NW Arkansas. Wal-Mart. The rest of the state, not so much. Stuck in time. The same old people live on the same old land. And this video shows who they were, and are, still pretty much today. INDEPENDENT LENS | Banished | PBS

Kudo's to this man who dares to stand up against the status quo. His comment on telling the NAACP to kiss his butt was truely American. It's quite obvious to see that he will not bow down to these special interest groups. Well, good for him. As for changing his mind to attend. I don't believe this is a simple case of CYA but a standard approach to his previous attendances in this same event for the past several years. It's just refreshing to see someone stand up to the NAACP for once. The NAACP group is no longer needed. They are as racist as the KKK and should be considered of the same type group. There may still be racism in America but there is certainly no differences in what you can do versus the color of your skin.

Your comment about him getting 35% of the vote so 1/3 of the people think he's cute makes no sense. The number of people that voted for him has nothing to do with what he said or how many people support or defend it.
For example, I voted for him, and I support his stance, but I think his remark was unprofessional.
There's goes your presumptuous math.
