A SAD 58 bus went off the road Monday afternoon on Pillsbury Road in Strong. Twenty students and the driver escaped injury and students were quickly transferred to another bus and taken home. After plowing through about 50 feet of snowbanks, the bus came to rest in a ditch.

Bus driver Larone Crockett, 58, of Strong was distracted for a moment causing the bus to leave the country road shortly after 3 p.m. Pillsbury Road is located off Norton Hill or Route 234.

The passengers consisted of students from kindergarten through high school, said Crockett at the scene. The snowbanks were still soft and the bus plowed through, he added.

With the help from members of Strong Fire Department, the students were transferred to another bus for the ride home within about 10 minutes, said officer Heidi Wilcox from the Franklin County Sheriff's Department.

He kept them inside and warm until the second bus could arrive.

An estimate of damage to the bus could not be determined until it was pulled out of the ditch, she said.

I can't believe the parents weren't called!

I received a call from the Lewiston School Department when my childrens' bus was involved in something minor (I can't remember what now.) But the police had to speak to each child and make sure that they were okay before they were released AND all parents received very prompt notification of the situation. I can't believe that the kids weren't checked out or spoken to and the parents hadn't been notified!

the children were checked

the children were checked over by a school nurse today, and the principal contacted parents early this afternoon. The school denies that they dropped the ball and has an excuse for everything. There was no ambulance to check on the kids because the bus driver and the one police officer said that the children were fine. One child actually went to the doctors today and was diagnosed with a sprained neck! The school says that they didn't call parents at the time because they didn't know who was on the bus.
I would like to hear the school acknowledge that they dropped the ball, that the driver will no longer be driving school buses, and I'd like to see a plan set in place in case this happens again.

I Would Want to Know...

What distracted the driver?....From the few comments left here...something doesn't ring true...All the students on that bus should have been treated at the scene by EMT's...It is the school's responsibility to notify the parents of these children...One comment about the bus driver having complaints over the years of speeding?...and still allowed to drive?...I don't blame these children for there fear of not wanting to take the bus to school...It's hard enough being a kid growing up in today's society...one should not have to worry about there child once there placed on a school bus...School is becoming a scarey place...first we have teachers getting charged with touching children inappropriately...to one having child pornography on his computor with pictures of his own students on it...When is it going to be safe to send our children to public schools?...Thank God the bus didn't flip over...this could have been way worse than it already is...I, too, hope the SJ keeps reporting on this story...too many times we hear of these accidents and that's it...If the children are experiencing pain, I would have them checked out and send the bill to the school department...Whip lash is a horrible thing...sometimes not felt until a few days after an accident like this...why the State of Maine is not required to have seatbelts on school buses is beyond me....God Bless the children...They are the future....

As If!!

Obviously someone is trying to protect the bus driver. At the scene of the accident you can see that the bus hit and rode the ditch, then went up over a driveway and took out a few mailboxes, then went back into the ditch and took chunks out of a few trees before coming to a stop. None of the children were checked out by medical staff, they were just put on another bus and sent home. No one from the district has called any of the parents. The bus driver is a very sweet man, but there have been many complaints over the years about his speeding. He drives way too fast then slams on the brakes at the stops. Many of the children are sufferring mentally and physically this morning. Some with aches and pains, others refusing to ride the bus. If the district doesn't step up, I believe that legal action may be taken by many parents.

What about the Parents ?

I hope the SJ will try and follow this story up and find out why the parents of these children were not contacted by any school officials and still have not been called. I know this for a fact because on of my friends children was on that bus and now her child is scared to go back on the bus. Also she has not been contacted by SAD 58 to explain anything.

fixit001...

May I ask you why you think the "distracted driving law" is so stupid?...Would you feel the same if you had a child on that bus?..Not being wise at you...just wondering...

a small distraction when

a small distraction when going the speed limit shouldn't put you in the ditch. I drive on a daily basis. I tend to the radio, the heater, and the kids in the backseat. All of these are distractions and I'm not going off the road.
