Disappointing process

As a member of the hiring committee for the new Lewiston police chief, I am incredibly disappointed in the city staff and elected officials who served on the committee. City staff did not accommodate committee members' schedules when deciding meeting times, and it appears to me that elected officials on the committee had already made up their minds before reading any of the applications. I found out that a decision about hiring had been made, not at a committee meeting, but rather at the City Council meeting on Aug. 18.

The creation of the hiring committee was a great idea. If the hiring committee had functioned as intended, with all members being able to serve in full capacity, I believe the process for hiring a new police chief would have been fair. But because some members of the committee were focused on making a quick decision, rather than a collective decision, the process was not fair to the applicants. Nor was input from all members of the committee valued equally.

I hope that the process for hiring the new city administrator doesn't follow the same path.

No matter who ends up being the new city administrator, the process for selection must be fair, accountable and create a sense of mutual respect and cooperation. It is only through such a process that we can put negative tensions to rest and go forward as a community.

It looks like they are

It looks like they are planning exactly that. They haven't allotted nearly enough time for the City Administrator selection process, so it's obvious they are planning to usher in Mr. Nadeau. He may be the best person for the job, but we will never know, because they don't intend to conduct the process.

It would be harder to say if councilors weren't doing things behind closed doors all the time.

Tron, point of correction -

Tron, point of correction - the citizens commission empaneled for the Police Chief search was done solely by Mr. James Bennett in his role as administrator for the city, the decision was his alone, the choices were his alone. The council had nothing to do with who served on the committee, what their marchng orders were or the final decisions, although two councilors were appointed - Theriault & Nelson peters - Nelson did not serve due to schedule conflicts. Unfortunately you once again prove how little you kow of the process by making such ludicrous accusations without a shred of facts behind them.

Veritas, I appologize, I was

Veritas, I appologize, I was not aware of anyone in our community going by the first name of town and a last name of clown, clearly they are well hidden. Sort of like Clifford Drake and others...feels like the Wizard of Oz behind the curtain, until Toto gives that curtain a tug....
