I cannot help but wonder if members of the Republican Party are still pleased with their choice of candidate to run for governor of the state of Maine.

I have lived in Lewiston all of my life and I am not pleased to know that Paul LePage also comes from this city. He does not represent the people of Maine in a proper manner.

Paul LePage is the most uncouth person I have ever known to sit in the governor's chair in this state.

I wonder if you have voted at all, or are you like many quick to cast broad stroked judgement on our Governor? You See Cecila the Economic and Social conditions here in Maine are so anti commonsense that perhaps our Governor has hidden his 'Couth' image .I'm not the least bit concerned and I am much less concerned with what Critics like you have to say. I find it comical that what Gov LePage is going to do is neither "right" or "left." The "republican" sweep was just an outcry of common sense. I personally don't care about his "couth" or anything else he has to say. We can't afford this government. There is NO more money. We need to fullfill our obligations, we need to trim redundancy. We need to PAY our bills. To say we have "balanced" the budget while shorting the hospitals is CRAZY. To say our last Governor sacrificed himself politically to "Not raise broad based taxes", is a word game. The citizens who own property, know that taxes were shifted to the towns, by shorting all sorts of programs. So every town scrambled to adjust for the difference, and we ended up with..... higher property taxes. In order ot have our existing businesses grow, and attract new ones, AND to stop the out-migration, regulation, taxes, redundancy needs to be trimmed drastically. IF the "repubs" and this Gov won't do that, we all have to shop for new ones.
A 180 degree turn. I am going to miss Madeleine and Barb and the rest. They really have very gentle and sound voices. It s a shame

I have spent about an hour skimming over the letters and comments posted since I left. Nothing I have seen leads me to believe that my real name, or any other real info, is safe in the hands of the green-badged. On the contrary, the general tone of these discussions (and I use the term loosely) has taken a very predictable dive. Maybe it will change when those hundreds of the newly verified actually do something other than lurk - but I would bet against it.

The central theme always devolves to plain envy. It is very appropriate that the staff chose the color green.

While I disagree with the new Sun Journal policy of requiring everyone to use their real name in the debates on their website, I find your comments way overboard. There is no comparing government censorship with the rules instituted by the Owners of a website for commenting on their website. You have a very small world if you believe that the new SJ rules will end free debate and leave you with "no way to speak out agoinst the governent" (sic). It is one small website which does offer you the opportunity to voice your opinions if you provide your real name.

I have written in the past that I am conflicted about the SJ rule that people have their identity verified and that their real names be used publicly. I have always used my real name. But I will not be getting "verified" because I think that being forced to use your real name in online political discussion can be dangerous for some people. Will remove the level ground that we can now debate freely on. Plus it will add an element to debates which has been absent from most until now: personal information.

How will it be dangerous? Sadly we live in a world where many of the moral constraints of the past are all but gone. In my own lifetime political debate has gone from having some degree of respect for the well thought out and deeply held beliefs to the insinuation and outright claim that people with differing positions are morally deficient, evil, traitors, Nazis, haters of our nation and our freedoms. And those are just the tip of the sad iceberg.

As we have debated issues on the SJ website over the last few years we have seen people who have been over the top in their rhetoric and who have displayed what can be described as a short fuse. Armed with the name of the "traitor" who "hates America" how long will it be before some of these debates spill over into public confrontations in the grocery store, at a little league game, or in the dark of the night when a short fuse burns down and a rock is thrown, a car is vandalized, or someone is assaulted?

How will it remove the level playing field? Right now we carry on debates with people we know only by what they write and chose to reveal. The person with the Doctorate can debate the high school drop-out without assuming or asserting that his advanced degree gives him knowledge that trumps the high school drop-out.

And how will what you say here effect your job? Maybe your boss is on the other side of the political spectrum from you. Maybe you are for Gay rights and he is against. Will you feel free to express your opinion? Does anyone see that this policy could have a chilling effect on the conversations and debates?

The debates will now become places where personal information can be used to distort, mock, degrade, injure and drive people from the conversations here at the SJ. Your kid gets arrested, you get a divorce, your teen-aged daughter is pregnant, you filed for bankruptcy, you live in poorer part of town. All of these and more become fodder for the cruel assaults we have already witnessed here on the SJ site.

But this is the way the SJ has decided to proceed. I believe that they can accomplish their goals without making peoples real-names public. I believe that they can do this easily and that it would enhance the quality of debate on this site. I will spare you the details of how I think the SJ should proceed.

Making my name public is my choice. I did it with some thought and knew what I was getting into. I have received calls from people who have both agreed with me and disagreed with me. I got a call this week from someone who is starting a website in response to this policy. But that is because of my choice. And the SJ should allow for choice for all.

Mr. Elliott, there was no name calling. Cecilia addressed the governor properly as Paul LePage. She described the governor as being uncouth, which is true. The governor lacks good manners, refinement, and grace and is proud of that fact. Most of the governor's supporters find this trait attractive (38% of Maine's voters), which says a lot about them as well.

It's amazing how in this day, ignorance, lack of good manners, and crassness have become fashionable. It's no wonder our public education system is failing with what it has to work with.
