About six weeks ago I asked the users of our website, sunjournal.com, to do something radically different — to begin attaching their real names when commenting on stories.
Today, on the eve of switching to the new system, I am happy to say that your response has exceeded even our most optimistic expectations.
More than 600 people have gone through the simple verification process and are poised to start using the new commenting system tomorrow.
When I first announced the change, we privately told ourselves we would be happy to have 60 people signed up by Feb. 1. As you can see, 10 times that number have responded.
So, thank you for confirming, in more ways than one, that we are doing the right thing.
Many of us in the newsroom have made verification calls to readers and we have been touched and rewarded by the experience.
First, many of you told us that the change is long overdue, and that you too had been offended by the tone of anonymous commenting.
Moreover, many of you told us how much you enjoy the Sun Journal and sunjournal.com, and how you rely upon it for community news.
We also enjoyed talking to the many local residents who are now living in other states. It was interesting to see how avidly they stay connected to the region through sunjournal.com.
We were also surprised how upbeat and supportive users are about the Sun Journal and sunjournal.com. Thank you for expressing that.
As I said in my original column, this is an unusual step for a newspaper website. Our industry seems to have settled for quantity of commenting over quality, trading meaningful expression for acrimonious banter.
Some in the industry have even predicted our experiment will fail and that people will no longer comment on our stories.
During this process, we also discovered more reasons why anonymous commenting is often harmful and unfair.
In one case recently, a young rape victim was identified by an anonymous commenter on a story. While this could be done even by a verified user, we hope it is now more unlikely to happen.
In another case, we found one user in the system who was using nine separate IDs while commenting.
Sometimes she deceptively used the multiple IDs to make it appear as if many people agreed with her opinions.
But the best reason to eliminate anonymous commenting is the simplest. When people stand behind their words, they have a greater stake in making sure they are thoughtful, civil and accurate.
We hope you will join that new conversation.

Serenity
It is 6:40 in the evening, as the world settles in to rest after a long day, you can hear the crickets chirping in the tall grass. No longer are we disturbed by the sounds of machine gun fire and mortar shells exploding around us. Once in a while some young teens will set off a fire cracker or two, no harm is done, but mother is still startled. As I sit on the rocking chair on the front porch, I wonder if one of the neighbors will meander down the path to banter over politics or the events of the day. With the snipers gone, it is now safe to do so more freely. I believe I could learn to enjoy this.

for incommunicado for a while. Other fish to fry.
For all who have departed, I will miss your viewpoints - concurring AND opposing. While a majority of those who have left held opinions similar to my own, I also will rue the loss of those who dissented. The reason? They all provoked thought on a given subject and caused self-examination of my principles. Sometimes the result was affirmation; other times it was modification. In either case, stimulation of the mind was the product...and THAT is always a good thing.
So to the departed: your newfound silence is deafening. To the remaining: I may now be in the minority, but I will not be timid. Let the games begin.

As a paid subscriber to the Sun Journal, I appreciate being able to check a story online a times and especially the ability to quickly share an article with friends. I have written and had letters to the editor published with my name attached. I have provided information and opinion. I agree with the new policy to require the same online. Due to the good work of Ben Franklin and others, Silence Dogood would be able to sign his own name today. As a paying customer I approve of the change to encourage legitimate discussion. If nobody ever commented again online I would still be happy to have a good news report from good journalists such as Donna Perry and others.

Thanks Madeleine, may God smile on you and send soft rain upon your fields. (only Douglas will relate) You must be bursting with pride about your son. I don't have children, but through fate, providence?, I helped put a neice and a nephew partially thru college, and one nephew completely thru college. Wow, to the tune of tens of thousands of dollars. But, it was more dimensional than that, as only a mom really could understand. It has been making them believe in a life for themselves, that in reality they can't see, can't feel, but can imagine. So, i sacrificed my own retirement, for their dream. Just like you sacrificed your beloved Maine for a better future for yours. It would make my heart ache to not be here. But after nine generations, I am the last, the younger ones left for better opportunity for a life, their own families, persuing their dreams. But, not here, which is heart breaking.
Anyway. It had to be terrible for LSJ to make this decision. I wonder how many meetings they had about it?
I probably disaagree with Mr Rhoades BEFORE he applies his fingers to his keyboard, but that doesn'tmean I am going to be vitrolic, and I will respect his right to say the things he says, as dumb as they are.....hahahahaha. Sorry Rex/

Let me hazard a final guess who that was. She even replied to her own posts, haha talk about multiple personalities. I am also done here as well, too many here think their posts of anecdotes and in some cases rewriting of history makes it a fact, well only on Fox. So good bye from far away, I will still read the SJ as I always have. I am also glad I will not have to see firsthand the harm "Liarpage" and his team of morons will do to the environment in the State of Maine.

"As a matter of Principle" was a great post John, nothing to add. I am gonna miss you, Ben, Madeleine, Barb. What a conondrum, civilty verses safety. Refraining from personal attacks and sticking to the issue being discussed, versus again, safety of people speaking here. Tough decision for LSJ, I guess we'll have to see if it was the right one. Maybe they can layer more security. It is a matter of perception, if some of the posters don't feel safe, then they are not safe. In the words of Angus, some statements are libelous.
Media guy, duly noted, Shawn too. In word craft it's always Emphasis, tone, intent. And where the words are placed in the article, and adjectives applied to them. That's why John's post was precient. I enjoy reading the LSJ, admittedly I have walked up to that line too.. out of exhasperation. (sp) fat fingers. There are some on ths thread I just skip and I don't read. There are some here that I want to hear from. It's too bad it came to this, but LSJ board are a pretty thoughtfull group maybe they can change it to suit those who want to remain anonymous and ensure more safety too. We'l see.

He is in all advanced classes and is in the International Baccalaureate Program at his high school. He also plays three different sports and just won a gold medal at a tournament..he is well rounded and very smart. I asked what he thought of my and my other family member revealing our names....He said, Mom that is very dangerous. He has given us many examples as to why it is not a smart thng to do. I believe our family is in full agreement...so I will bow out. I am not complaining though. It's their newspaper, their commenting section...and their choice. I will miss everyone. I'm even going to miss that parrot. :) I hope Pirate varifies it soon, he would only be less if his parrot was missing. :)
Missing Maine..that's who and what I am...that is why I post here...it was my home until a couple of years ago, our family is all there, and hopefully we will be able to return should the state of Maine get jobs. :) My name is not important. :) My son is finding me another place to post. to think shawn may be insane he is a lot closer to the truth then most would give him credit for, while i work for the media and we "share" with everyone, we area smaller presence in maine and dont always get taken seriously, plus the fact we deal with "spot" news storys mostly, check this out anyone hear about the accident on 95 northbound the other day with the 18 wheeler, did the SJ tell you that he was SLEEPING, i think it was something like " PHOTOS: Sleeping driver careens big rig off Turnpike" to be more accurate. what the photos didnt tell you was the DRIVER WAS NOT asleep, he told the state trooper he had been feeling sick lately, but he never went to sleep, i know because we were onscene 10 minutes after the crash and spoke with troopers onscene. SJ did go out ot the site much later in the day AFTER we told them it had happened, i got nothing against sharing info with the other outlets, but to say we cover up things is a bit brash shawn.
It is true that the media can be censored because corporate interests usually watch the lower guy, because we are a private company and financed by other then choking ads we tend to give you "both sides" more often.
Bravo to the sj for the incredible way they cover this region, its too bad more people dont open their eyes as you say, they walk around in a daze wondering what to think until WE feed them what to think, they could think for themselves, that is allowed right, it would require a new line of thinking though, and i think that somewhere along the way everyone just got too lazy.

John I was very glad to see you re-post this comment here!!! You have been consistently the most pleasant, most respectful and most intelligent poster on this forum!! You have so eloquently stated my position and the position of most of the commentators on this blog!!! Thanks you Sir!!
I would like to also thank Pattie for giving Ben Harrison this one day pass and the SJ for giving us this Forum. I am against this change and will not "verify" also on principle!!! I am very much looking forward to it Changing back and hope this Experiment will not last long!!!!
Well 600 Verified members maybe that's more then Rex expected but to put that in prospective SJ's facebook page has almost 6000 "likes"!! So 10 percent of the people that "like"SJ have verified while 90 percent have not!!
SO Friends Please give serious pause before you "Verify". Do me this one favor take the GOOGLE TEST.
It's simple really go to google and type in your name, See results if you are comfortable with all the readers and posters on the SJ knowing this information and your personal opinions you are ready to be verified!! If you are not well then their is your answer!!! If you are like me after typing in my name the results where scary up came home address and the amount of property taxes I pay to the city of Auburn, my home phone number, my employers web site my contact information there, my wedding announcement from fifteen years ago, the announcements for the births of my three children (I was really surprised how long the SJ keeps these archived) my facebook page and these are just the kinds of information I would not want attached to my Personal opinions that I chose to share on the internet!!!! Thanks for your consideration on this and I hope I have helped in this very controversial decision for you all!!

I will miss being able to comment. I have had two very kind people call and ask that I relent since I have my name public anyhow. I wish I could.
600 verified members should provide the SJ with a good nucleus and a variety of opinions to keep things interesting. I attended a seminar last year where "reigning in" commentary was a side-topic brought up after an editor from a mid-western newspaper described the horror stories he encountered while trying to implement a comment system. The SJ has had noting but angels compared to this man. As newspapers evolve to the next stage places like the SJ will try numerous approaches until they find something that strikes a good balance. There is nothing nefarious about what the SJ is doing. I can only begin to imagine the nightmares Rex and his staff have while trying to find a business model that ensures profits and the continuing legacy of the Sun Journal. As an interested observer of the press as a whole I am pulling for them to be successful.

Would you like to respond? Login or create a new account. You'll need to verify your account before you can respond.Hey John, I've taken my time
Hey John,
I've taken my time to respond to your comment because it was very thoughtful and well-presented, and I wanted to reply in the same way.
First, I'm very sorry to see you go. You've been among our core group of commenters. But you knew that, because I've said as much to you privately already.
Second, you raise all valid and very true points. When we all are anonymous (or choose to be anonymous), it does in some ways level the playing field because the high school dropout can debate with the college professor. And there are people, who brought a lot of informed and intelligent information to the debate that will not be able to participate in the conversation because of things like their occupation, or their employer, or their home life, or whatever.
I completely empathize and understand where those people are coming from. And in the history of the Internet until very, very recently, an expectation of anonymity was the norm. Like that New Yorker cartoon:
I remember when Facebook announced that they were going to link profiles with other schools. There was outrage! What an invasion of privacy. Then when they were going to allow anyone get on Facebook, regardless of whether or not that had an .edu account. Everyone was upset. To put your name and your face and where you lived on the Internet for anyone to find you was crazy.
But that thinking has changed. And in a relatively short time, too. And I think most people would agree, for the better. Better than the days when all you saw on Facebook were the people you went to school with, and that's it. Sharing information with your friends and family, or reconnecting with lost friends has never been easier.
We decided that we wanted our community to be more like the open town hall and less like the anonymous message boards. We recognize that not everyone can and will stand up in the town hall. But for the people that do, they will know to whom they are speaking and maybe treat them more like another human being and less like a soulless, faceless name on the Internet.
Will it work? Will we ever go back? We don't know the answer to those questions.
But what I do know, and what this lesson of calling hundreds of people has taught me, is that we are a community of real people, with real families and lives, and I hope that this process has demonstrated that we as a business are willing to put the resources into making this online community work.

Mr Berry, I have always had a great deal of respect for you as a member of The L/A community and have always enjoyed your insightful comments on the SJ.
Standing up for your principles in spite of the fact that it would not change the way you post blows my mind, Hands Clapping, Cheers and Standing Ovation Sir. For someone who already posts under his real name to realize and stand up for those of us who see this Change as unsafe, unwise and shortsighted is just awesome!! And you should know you shocked the folks over at SJ. Your account was the example they kept using as to what the website would look like if all posters used their real names. THANK YOU for being the voice of reason that might actually be heard by the folks at Sun Journal they certainly believe they will be better of without the likes of Ben Harrison!!! And so many others!!
Good luck and God bless
Most Sincerely

Would you like to respond? Login or create a new account. You'll need to verify your account before you can respond. As A Matter Of Principle
As you may have suspected I have always posted using my real name. It is a matter of principle. Among other things it keeps me from giving in to the occasional temptation to abuse someone who irks me (not that I would, but..). That type of thing never leads to anything good. But mostly I believe that I should stand behind what I say in a public forum and part of that means putting my name on what I write.
That said, I also believe that there are very important reasons for wanting to remain anonymous. It would be very easy for the SJ to accomplish their goals while still allowing people to post anonymously. The people who have registered multiple accounts would be stopped and those who are banned for violations of the terms of service would really be banned. The SJ would have their real names and contact information and that would be what would prevent abuses.
Rex has written that the 600 people who have applied for verification are "confirming, in more ways than one, that we are doing the right thing." Really they are simply confirming that they want to continue being able to post comments. But all of the problems he listed about anonymous posting can be solved without requiring that people use their real names. And no one has addressed my comments or concerns about the new system. Since this Editorial and comment thread is on this topic I will restate my objections and concerns. Above all else I want to say that the Sun Journal has every right to impose whatever requirements they like for the use of their website. Will they continue to have people commenting? Undoubtedly. Will they change the tenor and tone of the conversations? Will they eliminate people who imply or assert that others are Nazi's or klansmen? Barring actually banning people (for life), which can be done under the system I propose, I doubt it.
I have written in the past that I am conflicted about the SJ rule that people have their identity verified and that their real names be used publicly. I have always used my real name. But I will not be getting "verified" because I think that being forced to use your real name in online political discussion can be dangerous for some people. Will remove the level ground that we can now debate freely on. Plus it will add an element to debates which has been absent from most until now: personal information.
How will it be dangerous? Sadly we live in a world where many of the moral constraints of the past are all but gone. In my own lifetime political debate has gone from having some degree of respect for the well thought out and deeply held beliefs to the insinuation and outright claim that people with differing positions are morally deficient, evil, traitors, Nazis, haters of our nation and our freedoms. And those are just the tip of the sad iceberg.
As we have debated issues on the SJ website over the last few years we have seen people who have been over the top in their rhetoric and who have displayed what can be described as a short fuse. Armed with the name of the "traitor" who "hates America" how long will it be before some of these debates spill over into public confrontations in the grocery store, at a little league game, or in the dark of the night when a short fuse burns down and a rock is thrown, a car is vandalized, or someone is assaulted?
How will it remove the level playing field? Right now we carry on debates with people we know only by what they write and chose to reveal. The person with the Doctorate can debate the high school drop-out without assuming or asserting that his advanced degree gives him knowledge that trumps the high school drop-out.
And how will what you say here effect your job? Maybe your boss is on the other side of the political spectrum from you. Maybe you are for Gay rights and he is against. Will you feel free to express your opinion? Does anyone see that this policy could have a chilling effect on the conversations and debates?
The debates will now become places where personal information can be used to distort, mock, degrade, injure and drive people from the conversations here at the SJ. Your kid gets arrested, you get a divorce, your teen-aged daughter is pregnant, you filed for bankruptcy, you live in poorer part of town. All of these and more become fodder for the cruel assaults we have already witnessed here on the SJ site.
But this is the way the SJ has decided to proceed. I believe that they can accomplish their goals without making peoples real-names public. I believe that they can do this easily and that it would enhance the quality of debate on this site. I will spare you the details of how I think the SJ should proceed.
Making my name public is my choice. I did it with some thought and knew what I was getting into. I have received calls from people who have both agreed with me and disagreed with me. I got a call this week from someone who is starting a website in response to this policy. But that is because of my choice. And the SJ should allow for choice for all.

From the mouth of a photojournalist (NOT SJ employed) who has been in the field for years, i see way to many accident, fire scenes where people who cant even get out and find a job run around in their PJS clogging up the scene for the authorities with THEIR opinion on the fact, heck some of them carry around a scanner in the car that cost more then a weeks worth of groceries (Can you buy scanners with food stamps, maybe...) and the truth is they KNOW NOTHING about the scene, they just clog it up when others are trying to get work done. How about the time when there was a huge fire on holland st, i waso n that scene and several people kept asking me if Sal Army was on scene with the canteen, i started wondering and although it cannot be verified it turns out that most likely some of these people had NOTHING to do with the fire they just came out to get a free meal, nice waste of the taxpayers money.
What i am getting at is as a paid "annoyance" as the fire and police often call us we are paid people to go to these scenes and get the info, we dont form opinions talking out our piehole, we form facts based on actual events, and for the most part (we journalists) this is a broad statement we try to print the facts, i dont photograph a mom holding her baby out the window then crop it so you cant see the firefighter below and say "look mom is hanging her baby out the window!" We report on the truth. The online commenting section is for people who niether have the authority nor the intelligence to get these things right.
Case in point # 1
When the woman that owned levers daycare was implicated with bad goings on and the drive by at her home did the SJ report she owned Levers, no they did not, but then all the loudmouths came in here and voiced it for us all to read, then people started pulling their kids out of the daycare because "suddenly" this was a bad place. The online commenting system reminds me of my father, he told me today "We are getting a foot of snow wedensday" and i asked him where he heard and he replys the radio, local forecasters in maine know about as much about maine weather as lepage knows about policy in maine (btw im not a republican or a dem, but lepages welfare "fix" intrigues me in a good way) the truth is they dont know, so people go around with their wipers up at night on their car and they huddle around their tvs with mindless eyes waiting for some smuck to TELL THEM what they need to believe (they could also look at the maps online and do the math themselves, but this would require timeaway from facebook and a lot of intellignece expended)
So yeah i get mad when people cowardly run and hide behind these systems, if you have something to say about that car wreck, fire, or political article be a man (or a woman) and stand up for what you believe in, this is AMERICA, and quit playing with the sissy guns, your only going to get it taken away from you by someone who knows how to use it on you, seriously folks i been reading trons posts for a long time now, do i agree with him, not often, but he is honest and would probably say EXACTLY what he said here to your face in public.
I leave it with this, if you want to run and hide behind a system that protects you your not ready to be a citizen and stand up for your beliefs, you just want to hid and be a nuisance, you dont belong here. People who want to fight should do so diplomatically but maybe that wont happen either.
All i have to say is im looking forward to the intelligent (i pray) conversations that will come after tommorrow, and even if they get heated maybe just maybe they will try to stay more on the topic (i went off on a rant)
My name is Jason Harris and i work for NCR Media out of Washington DC, i look forward to the conversation that we all know we can have!

"all the loudmouths came in here and voiced it for us all to read"....
Talk about a double standard. Isn't that what all you media guys/gals do each and everyday to our politicians, clergy, citizens, etc. Those that commented on this shooting had the articles of all the previous news reports, that all the media guys/gals reported. Are you suggesting that background checks are old news too? Are you saying that the character, and infamous activities, of those that work with our children are to be kept hush? Shame on you media guy. No one suggested anyone pull their children out of this daycare, or that any child had been hurt as of yet. No one suggested the daycare be closed either. Instead people suggested, starting with one of the neighbors who was the very first post, on the very first article, that these people needed to either clean up their act or stop running this daycare. This person was fearful for the children at this daycare.
That person did not leave their name in fear of retaliation. Yet, I believe the post was an act of courage and bravery...this person cared about the children and the childrens safety. I am glad for that first post...it woke me up, as I am sure it did alot of people. If you don't agree, that's just to bad. I am no media guy. I am a wife, mother and grandmother...and I have worked with children most of my life. Those that teach in our schools, care for the children, in our churches, those that run daycares, etc., better know that yes, we will be watching you...we are all done with our children being placed in danger because of those that feel that what they do in their private time is nobodies business. Especially when some of these things are criminal.
Further more, I think what bothered me most about that first comment, was when the neighbor stated, that children from the daycare were being brought to one of these addresses to go swimming...I then realised just how serious this was.
I will not disclose my name...not because I am a coward. I will not, because I have enough common sense and wisdom to know what is dangerous and what is not. I guess there should no longer be anymore calls that are anonymous concerning criminal activities, welfare fraud, child abuse etc....I suppose mediaguy, you would consider those that do to be cowards also...or maybe they're as you put it, "loudmouths"?
"i work for NCR Media out of Washington DC"...Well I am a taxpaying, law abiding citizen of the United states of America...just saying :)

well said even if it was a little puffed up, i wasnt looking for a rant, and if you look at the comments in the article you will see that YES someone did start to say they were pulling their kids out, yeah those people probably are not the best ones to run a daycare, and i have no doubt "you are watching"
But the truth is long after you choose to stay silent to "protect your safety" the conversation will continue!
It will just be carried on by people who not only are "taxpaying, law abiding citizen of the United states of America" but are also not afraid to stand up and put their name on it.
My mom works in a place in lisbon, a place that cares more about how many catalogs they make then the safety of their workers, its a god awful place, they put a survey and suggestion paper out , workers were told to sign their names, only 5 people put something down, two weeks later the same box appeared saying that they could keep their identities secret, the box had to be emptied twice in the same day,
truth be told if people want to remain cowardly then thats fine, if you believe in what your writing sign your name and quit bellyaching about some childhood nightmare made up about hordes of people hunting you down and lynching you
get over it, if not goodbye!

There's nothing puffed up about making sure children stay safe...I am not worried one bit, it is my right to stay anonymous as it is the right of the newspaper to say they have changed their policy. I respect that and I am sure they respect the fact that alot of us will be bowing out.
" But the truth is long after you choose to stay silent to "protect your safety" the conversation will continue!"
I am glad that it will. :) It's a good thing. :)
"YES someone did start to say they were pulling their kids out"
Could you please produce that post...because I never saw it. And if they chose to do that, that is their business. Are you saying these people that are concerned for their children are wrong? Do you think that keeping people in the dark is right? Do you have children or grandchildren of your own?
"yeah those people probably are not the best ones to run a daycare"
...hmmmm I wonder if some of these people, if they did not own or were not family members of those that own the daycare, could get a job in a school or daycare elsewhere? Background checks, Driving records, Drug tests, Criminal records, Credentials and today Credit records are all checked...It is what makes the difference on whether you get hired or not.
"It will just be carried on by people who not only are "taxpaying, law abiding citizen of the United states of America" but are also not afraid to stand up and put their name on it."
Because someone is verified, it does not make them a "taxpaying, law abiding citizen of the United states of America"...Gee, what school did you go to for goodness sakes? :)
Mediaguy, your suggestion that the people that work with your mom are cowards, or those that do not disclose their names are some how cowardly...is no surprise. I am old enough and wise enough to know a bully when I see one. You do not get to shame people into keeping quiet, disclosing their names or anything else. You do not get to shame people into becoming submissive to your obsession that they become verified.
"Get over it"?
lol :) You should take your own advice. ( shaking my head) It is goodbye, but not because you said so....it was my decision. :)
And young man/lady....Our children are the future, they are the hope for tomorrow..all they have is all of us adults to watch over them....Yes, we will be watching, and I will be watching because our little ones cannot protect themselves. They count on us "big people" to make the right choices and decisions for them. :)
Have a nice evening :)

Just FYI, There is no Yellow or white page listing for NCR Media in Washington D. C. My guess is that it is just a mail drop.
What irked me about your post is that you assert some kind of special insight to the collection of news and current events that your lack of facility with language and your name-dropping caused me to wonder.
In your comments you simply dismissed people who wish to remain anonymous by saying: "I leave it with this, if you want to run and hide behind a system that protects you your not ready to be a citizen and stand up for your beliefs, you just want to hid and be a nuisance, you dont belong here. People who want to fight should do so diplomatically but maybe that wont happen either." I find that very petty and condescending in a post that failed to address any of the reasons people gave for wanting to remain anonymous. Can you, will you address anything that has been posted here? Or will you just simply wait out my time here on the SJ site and let meaningful and uncomfortable inquiries pass unanswered?

probably the reason you couldnt find our organization is because we are privately held, i dont even think we have a website, i know we have a facebook lol
As for credentials that is just letting you know who i am so people dont think i am trying to mislead them, nothing more nothing less inferred,
I think that SJ showing your name and city is not a bad thing, it means accountability, i doubt everyone is going to break out the chains and clubs and go beat you up if you say something you strongly believe in, As for confidentiality nothing is confidential i work IT and if i wanted to i could find anyones house just by finding their IP and tracing it to the NOC and then to the modem, heck if you know what your doing an "unverified" poster could be tracked right to their pc in their house, they arent asking much, just for people to be accountable to the beliefs they have without hiding behind the wall of unknown
I do see the point where people dont like this new system, i even seem to understand why, but alas it does not matter what they want, SJ has made the decision and you will either verify or hit the road
Sorry i was so quiet, SJ doesnt notify us with replys to a topic (might be a good idea in the future) and we are preparing for a ride along with public works for the storm coming along!

Even privately held companies have websites - especially "Media" companies. So how about some links to photos that you have taken that have been used by news orgs, businesses, private publications, etc? When I write something for a company I can usually provide a link. You cannot pretend to be something you are not, assume the prestige and authority of that position (ie, a journalist), and then make comments based on all of this. Well, you can, but you will be called on it.
I haven't been to the Facebook page yet but what are the odds that the majority of the people are from Maine? I am at a slow public connection right now but when I get home I will check. Maybe I will spend some of my banked time on a couple databases I subscribe to and do some in-depth reporting on NCR Media. So far my public searches, including searches for DBA certificates and corporate filings are coming up with nothing.

Could you tell us more about NCR Media? You use it as a form of credential. Invoking "NCR Media out of Washington DC" to give what you say gravitas is OK but could we learn more about NCR Media? Can you direct us to its website? I did a quick search and found very little. Maybe I am simply unskilled at these things.
And since you are a professional paid journalist could we see some links to some of your work? Again, you make your status a central part of your complaints with people who are not verified here at the SJ.
Did you read my objections to this new system? What do you think of them? Where am I wrong? Could we have some of that "intelligent" conversation that you so long for now or does my asking for information somehow lower this particular conversation?

I don't really like the whole verification system - I get the idea of the need behind it, but like others have said, people get horrible on here when it comes to disagreements, and why give those crazies access to your full name?? That is just asking for trouble.
What the SJ should do is keep the verified info to themselves - make sure they have the person's name and phone number on file for THEIR records, but allow screen names to still be our choice and let us hide our personal info, like our full names, if we choose. What is the point of showing our full names to everyone who comments on here? As long as the SJ has the info, that should be enough.
And last time I checked, the L/A area isn't the most upstanding place as of late ... let's see, we've had two armed standoffs and a drive by shooting in the last WEEK ... yeah, I want to give my name out to someone I'm having a disagreement with over politics and such ... I don't think I'll be getting verified or commenting much longer.

Giving out our names is not safe. Disgruntled people can absolutely find where we live and they can easily get our phone numbers also. The internet has many free people searches that go as far as to not only give out our addresses and phone numbers they will even show those searching, a street side view of our homes. I don't like it at all. Yet, I understand LSJ concerns...so I will bow out. Tron, has already informed another member of my family and I, that we will not be missed. :) hehehe :) Gotta love him. :)
I would like to show you how easy it is to find someone once you have their name and what town/city they live in...ZABASEARCH, there are alot of other free search sites that will give you even more information too. This is the reason I will not give out my name...On some of these search sites they will also give out your family members names, all they need is your first name, last name and what state your from. Intelius is a search site that does just that...It really is very scary...and not safe.

But putting my name and phone number out there for me to get harassed for a comment I make on a blog would be stupidity on my part.
I was the subject of what I thought was a "feel good" story about 4 years ago and I got more crap about the story than I ever thought possible! Phone calls, people driving by my house slowly, mean & nasty comments.
Ya: all set with that.
There are crazy people all around and some of them live right here in Lewiston.
I don't need the stress that comes with potential harassment.

it is easy to get. I googled a few names that are verified and easily got the phone numbers. Some searches even brought up where the person works, his work phone number and his company email. I was amazed that one person's name brought up contracts he has made with MeDOT. The people searches on Yahoo and whitepages.com also give the names of people associated with the person, such as family. As long as the person's name and town are known anybody can pull up a heck of alot of information on them.
It's your newspaper and you can do with it what you want to, but please don't try to convince me or anyone else that publishing personal information is not going to lead to trouble.

Neither would mine fatandhappy. I'm a single woman who lives alone in a very rural area. I'm not stupid enough to put myself at risk by willingly providing my personal information. Yes...I am able to protect myself (my 9-mm would do the job I'm sure), but why would I want to invite trouble? Registering with the SJ is one thing, providing that information to the public is quite another. There are some pretty crazy people in this world (and this community) and if someone took offense to my opinion would the SJ be able to stop them from personally taking it up with me? If they can GUARANTEE my safety, then I'll go along with the verification process.

I don't understand what SJ wishes to accomplish with this. For me, it wouldn't make any difference if I used my real name or a screen name, my comments would not change. I have a wife and a 5 year old son and i don't want to invite problems for them by advertising my personal information.
As far as Candice and her 9 screen names.....so what? She's just a nut and her shenanigans haven't hurt anyone. What she is doing is stupid but not offensive or dangerous. What makes her stupidity news worthy?
Tron and Veritas have been arguing for real names to be used for over a year. It is pointless. I know exactly where Tron lives, even his apartment number, because he put his real name on his profile. And although I know his address, I don't want him to know mine. I am a 6'4" 280 pound redneck. I am not afraid for myself, fighting has always come natural for me, but I can't be home every minute of the day to protect my wife and son.
I assume that the comments and profiles will be open to anyone to read, whether they are registered or not. I find this foolhardy and an unnecessary risk. I see problems for posters and lawsuits for SJ on the horizon.
I would be more than happy to identify myself and register with SJ if they would just keep it on file but not publish it.

By the way, Pattie. I was led to believe in a conversation you and I once had, that our user names, ie; Pirate, Tron, Veritas, would likely be allowed under the new rules provided that all verified individuals submitted to the SJ to the information they required. It is now evident that this will not be the case. Therefore, I seriously believe the Pirate will pack up his belongings, including the parrot, and go elsewhere for entertainment. Perhaps some place where the heavy hand of dictatorship is not wearing lead gloves.
For any who may say good riddance, the loss is yours; not mine, for you have given up your freedom.
